Today, May 24, at 5:00 a.m. Central Time (12 noon Rome time), Bishop Bolands resignation was officially accepted by the Holy Father. As of this day Bishop Robert Finn is the bishop of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph. Please now include his name in the Eucharistic Prayer as our bishop.
A Mass with Bishop Boland to celebrate his twelve years as our shepherd is scheduled at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Thursday June 23 at 7:00 p.m. All are invited to this celebration. Please extend an invitation to your parishioners through your bulletins.
You may find the official announcement on the Vatican website. You may find Bishop Bolands farewell statement on our diocesan website.
Bishop Finn has issued the following statement:
When I was named by Pope John Paul II last spring as Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Bishop Boland welcomed me warmly and has been very kind and helpful to me as I had to adjust to a new home and new responsibilities. On this occasion when Pope Benedict XVI has accepted his retirement as fifth bishop of our diocese, I want to wish Bishop Boland every grace and blessing and many holy, happy, and healthy years to come as he continues his Episcopal ministry in a new way. He has my complete admiration and support, and -- I know -- the gratitude and love of Gods people.
As we, the Church in Kansas City-St. Joseph diocese, embark on this next chapter, I pledge my love and service to all Gods flock entrusted to me, and, as I ask your help and prayers, I commend myself and this local Church to Mary, my mother and queen, to our co-patron St. Joseph, and to the mercy of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Can you explain more? I'm afraid I can't tell the bishops without a scorecard anymore!
Do any of you know anything about Boland?
Just another coverup artist who made speeches about how the media coverage of the gay pedophiles hurt "the virtuous priests." Maybe if the "virtuous priests" had throttled their molesting brethren, like real men do when they catch child-molesters, we wouldn't have had this scandal.
Boland denied a request for Latin masses in Savannah.
I don't know who that 'spirit' is, but he's not the Holy Spirit. I wish he'd get lost.
Who? Boland? or Finn?
Bishop Boland of Atlanta is the brother of the retired Raymond Boland, former bishop of Kansas City - St. Joseph.
The guy in Savannah went to Atlanta, not Kansas City?
A year ago, Bishop Finn was appointed, at the request of Bishop Boland (who is of retirement age) as Coadjutor Bishop or KC-St. Joe. He was scheduled to take over in April, but with the death of JPII, the diocese has had to wait.
Finn is the previous editor of the St. Louis Review and is seen as quite conservative. Boland has pretty much let the KC-St. Joe diocese run itself. He's been open to letting priests and pastoral associates/administrators pretty much determine how they want to run their parishes (with the consent of many parishioners). Now the fear is that pastors, parishes will have to give more than lip service to the GIRM and the letter of the law, not just its spirit.
That 'spirit' of V II.
He can either get lost or read the documents of V II and get in line with the letter of V II.
Got it. Sorry that I'm slow here. Conversion is like changing citizenship. You study the culture, the founding documents, the hierarchical structure, and still there's one more thing to learn, let alone the language with as little accent as possible. Now I've got to learn faces and names and characters. WHEW! Tell me again why I'm doing this? ;)
The guy in Savannah is Bishop J. Kevin Boland and is still there.
This guy is from KC. Different guy.
I believe the study predated the "scandal" by several years and was conducted and/or published by the Kansas City Star. It was a very technically flawed study and it's purpose was to weaken the celibacy requirement. Had they addressed the rampant homosexuality in the priesthood they might have avoided much of the "crisis of abuser priests" that came a little later.
But then,as now, there is still much resistance to identifying one of,if not the major cause of the "crisis".
Ping for your input on Bishop Finn. Thanks.
Right -- I had forgotten that: the study that said priests were dropping like flies from AIDS. I wonder if it was the situation in Kansas City that gave them the idea.
Ping for your input on Bishop Finn. Thanks.
Thanks for the input. Very good news! BTW, have you heard anything about who will replace Archbishop Levada in SF? Thanks.
Right now I'm more interested in seeing Bishop Gossman of Raleigh head off into the sunset as that 'other' diocese in North Carolina (I'm in Charlotte w/ solid Bishop Jugis) is in particular need of work.
Dear MSSC664,
As this appears to have been a planned transition, why did Bishop Boland resign around this time? The information I gather is that he's only 73 years old, so this wasn't a standard retirement.
Thanks,
sitetest
Thanks.
Is Bishop Boland 75 years old???
Boland is 73+, born Feb 8, 1932
Coadjutor bishops are appointed, typically, when the ordinary is ill or physically unable to perform his duties. Boland is likely retiring for medical reasons.
Thanks,Johnny for the info. I feel sure that the problems in your diocese as well as in a lot of others will be taken care of,fairly soon! I'm very encouraged with what I've seen so far.
Ah, well, that's just the thing, Raleigh's the neighboring diocese. I'm in Charlotte where everything is peachy. Relatively speaking.
I honestly can say that I don't know Finn. He was supposed to be our pastor literally right before he was sent to KC last year. That was a mess. The archbishop didn't know what the Vatican was up to. He seems to be fine, but you really never know until they get into the office.
