Rabbi: Vote Shas or go to hell

Member of Shas' Council of Torah Sages says during sermon at Jerusalem synagogue that PM Sharon had stroke because he went with Shinui, hurt religious services Ilan Marciano

Rabbi Shimon Baadani, a member of Shas' Council of Torah Sages, provided on Saturday evening amazing explanations for Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's illness.

"Ariel Sharon had a stroke because he went with Shas and hurt religious services," Baadani explained during a sermon he gave at a Jerusalem synagogue.

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef: 'Vote Shas, reach heaven' / Ilan Marciano Shas spiritual leader Ovadia Yosef speaks at pre-election rally in Tel Aviv, encourages followers to vote for religious Sephardic party; another rabbi tells those in attendance: Don't believe politicians, they are all liars and Arab-lovers Full story

The rabbi also promised "hell to those who don’t vote Shas," thus extending the remarks of Shas' spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, who said at the beginning of the month that heaven awaits only those who will vote for the party.

Baadani also referred to the public's apathy toward the elections, saying that "we are facing an important battle. In the previous elections Shinui got more Knesset seats than Shas and therefore we were not made part of the coalition. We had a tough time and were in despair."

"For us these elections are in favor of the yeshivas, the ultra-Orthodox junior schools, the mikvahs (ritual baths) – so how can we be indifferent? Our job in the Knesset is to stop the destruction among the people of Israel, and therefore we allow ourselves to enter this 'golden calf.' Otherwise, what do we have to do with the legislative body? The Torah of Israel is our law," he said.

Shinui: Only hell is Shas' return to government

Baadani usually delivers his sermon before Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's sermon. His remarks

caused an embarrassment in Shas, although the party leaders are familiar with the rabbi's opinion. However, Shas officials explained that his words will not harm the party's election campaign.

Baadani is considered to be a very active member of Shas' Council of Torah Sages. He is known as an assertive person who says his piece even if his words may stir a row. Baadani often consults Shas Chairman Eli Yishai. He is involved in politics and mainly deals with the movement's education system.

Shinui said in response to the rabbi's remarks Sunday morning that "the only hell one can think about is Shas' return to the government. Shas' leaders cannot retrain themselves and hide their real face. Behind Shas' mask hides a terrible movement that wants to take the Israeli society back to dark places of curses and witchcraft."

Meretz-Yahad officials were also outraged by the rabbi's comments.

"After Purim Shas removed its mask, and after trying to portray itself as 'social' it has clearly been proven that it has remained a dark party of idolaters and cursers," Knesset Member Zahava Gal-On said.

Former Shinui member MK Avraham Poraz (Secular Faction), who was a minister in Sharon's government, said: "This remark once again proves the evilness and insensitivity of Shas' leadership. Even being in the opposition has not caused its leaders to learn some good manners, and Olmert must denounce the party after the elections."

Last week it was vote Shas - get to heaven. Now the nutty ultra-orthodox rabbi is saying you have to vote Shas or go to hell. Every day it seems like the ultra-(wacko)-orthodox Jews inch closer and closer to the islamocrazies. Bottom line they are both crazy and scary. Thank the lord that most Israelis see them for what they are and that they are not as numerous as the islamofascists.

If a Chirstian made such a remark, it would be widely condemned (and rightly so).

I expect Pat Robertson will invite him to appear on the 700 Club.

"Ariel Sharon had a stroke because he went with Shas and hurt religious services,"

And you wonder why some people question religion?

Each one claims to have the way, and all the nonbelievers are going to hell.

It's just a short walk from that to beheading the heretic.

Sheesh.

No, you are correct that they are not as violent as the their much more numerous Islamic counterparts. The more concentrated they are the more violent they become. Try driving through on of their neighborhoods on the Sabbath- you won't feel quite as sympathetic.

True, the big difference being that their compatriots take them to task:

"After Purim, Shas removed its mask, and after trying to portray itself as 'social' it has clearly been proven that it has remained a dark party of idolaters and cursers"

No Muslim leader, inside or outside the Middle East, will speak out like this against far worse idolaters and cursers.

I suppose being 5'7" and weighing in at 300+lbs and having a high-pressure job had nothing to do with it.

I agree that the sane Israelis/Jews are much less tolerant of their wackiness- to their credit.

It was the Romans who crucified people, not the Jews/Israelis.

It must be great to hear voices and be able to read the mind of God, and know why he does certain acts.

This is kind of like reading the New York Times Op Ed page to get the scoop on Evangelical Christians.

The leftist secular Jews HATE the religious Jews. And I gather that you aren't too fond of religion either.

I have no problem with religions that don't:

1) try to impose their innocuous beliefs on others,
2) try to impose their injurious beliefs on others, including their children who cannot defend themselves.

They dont need to. Plenty of fighter jets, attack helis and hi-tech sniper rifles to do those kinds of deeds.

Well, if you're saying Israel is murdering innocents as the Palestinian terrorists are,you more than lost me.

And as noted by another poster, it was Romans who crucified people.

But, I won't be beheaded.

I agree with you that extreme edges of any religion can be dangerous. However, you have to go to one hell of an extreme to be compared to the Arab terrorists we are dealing with now.

Really?

I don't know of an Jews, Orthodox or of an other variety, attempting to send you physicallyto Hell like the the Islamics.

But I guess to you what Jews say intramurally to each others in the heat of a campaign is the same as the Islamic death and destruction.

Still why compare the Jews to the Islamics if somebody is sending someone to Hell.

It is a widely held Christian believe among large segments that Jews are all going to Hell. We are grateful that unlike the Islamics they are not attempting to hurry the process.

At the end I find the most similarities of being crazy and scary between the Jew hating Islamics and the Jew hating posters.

If heaven were only filled with morons like this guy, it wouldn't be worth going to. This is the difference between Western and Muslim countries. In Western countries most people don't take this kind of nuttiness seriously.

Impose? Probably you tell your children what you believe, and others do the same. I have never noticed that religious people do more imposing on their children than secularists.

Sorry, but the current government of Israel has spent much of its time persecuting religious Jews. Sharon uprooted numerous settler families, destroyed their homes, and pretty much abandoned them.

These things cut both ways. I don't find it all that outrageous that someone should be criticize him for that kind of conduct.

You could be the PR guy for Abe Foxman of the ADL.
