According the widespread rumors (many from normally reliable sources), the plan is for the Pope in some form (details are not available yet) to issue a very broad permission for priests to offer Mass according to the rite of Pius V (commonly and mistakenly called Tridentine). One thing that would convince a lot of people that +Benedict XVI is serious about preserving this rite would be if he ordered a new edition of the Pian Rite to be published. The last time the Missal was updated was in 1962. An update is long overdue. Saints have been added to the calendar and there are some minor tweekings that could be done to the missal beyond that.

It's called Tridentine because it was promulgated as a result of the decrees of the Council of Trent.

Personally, I like the pre-Tridentine stuff.

One of the biggest tweakings needed is eliminating the duplicate readings of Epistle and Gospel, once in Latin and once in the vernacular. This was the change I was hoping for when Vatican II convened. Instead, we got everything in the vernacular, but a lousy translation and elimination of most of the sense of the sacred.
