Seminaries Full in Southern India (despite new anti-conversion law)
Zenit News Agency ^ | April 11, 2006

Posted on 04/11/2006 9:57:54 PM PDT by NYer

KOENIGSTEIN, Germany, APRIL 11, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Vocations in India seem to be booming as increasing numbers of young men stepping forward to prepare for the priesthood.

In a recent interview with the international charity Aid to the Church in Need, Father Ignatius Prasad, rector of the Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Chennai (formerly Madras), gave this optimistic assessment of the Church.

The priest explained that his seminary now has 286 students and that -- due to a lack of space -- he had to turn away 23 candidates, who have been forced to continue their training elsewhere.

The seminary is one of four in southern India with a combined total of almost 800 students from 28 dioceses. More than 60 of them are due to be ordained to the priesthood next month.

In Chennai, there were now more than 30 students in each year-group in the seminary's theology section, double the number in the late 1980s, Father Prasad said.

"Vocations are going up; this has been the case for the last five years or so," the rector said. "We find it difficult to admit all the applicants and set a tight deadline for them to get their papers in on time."

Father Prasad revealed that there was growing "political pressure" to limit the growth of the Church with a new anti-conversion law introduced in the state of Tamil Nadu: Preaching in public is forbidden and would-be converts to Christianity now face a barrage of paperwork thrust upon them by government officials.

Retreats, sodalities

The seminary rector said that people were turning to the Church in protest against the new regulations.

"The more pressure they put on people, the more they feel like proclaiming their faith," he said.

The priest went on to explain that lively youth programs were drawing people to the faith and encouraging men to discern a possible vocation to the priesthood. Retreats, sodalities and altar serving had all helped to boost the number of seminarians.

He also praised the work of Aid to the Church in Need, describing how the charity had supported key training for seminary staff, Mass intentions, library books and a generator.

"What we feel is so important," Father Prasad added, "is to help the students to realize what they are learning about is not so much an academic subject but a mystery, something that is very personal and with a strong human dimension to it."

Dear Freepers in Christ,

Actually Freeper NYer beat me to posting this article. I did see this article this morning on my email as I am subscribed to the Zenit News Service.

This is Good News despite the fact that I am not a Catholic from Southern India. It is true that Catholic Seminaries in many parts of Southern India are overflowing and in some Seminaries the Rectors are turning away potential Seminarians because they have no more place for them.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for the Archdiocesan Seminary in Bombay where Vocations are not as plenty as in Southern India that is essentially because large numbers of Catholic Families have been immigrating to various countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc in the last 10 years or so.

In Addition, to what I have said above it is difficult to get Vocations to the Priesthood in Cities like Bombay, Delhi, etc where Catholics are not as religious or staunch in their faith as compared to Catholics from South India.

Also, because Catholics for a number of years have been facing rampant discrimination in the Corporate World specially in Bombay-- many, many, Catholic Families have been immigrating for the last 20 years even to countries like the United States as well as to the United Kingdom.

I know of at least 2 dozen Catholic Families from my immediate neigborhood who have migrated since 1986 to the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and to Canada as well. And more of them are going every month and every year.

I am also on the verge of migrating to Canada in the near future.

My Family and I are a minority among Catholics in Western India. We are very orthodox in our Catholic Faith as regards all the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Every Year more than 10,000 Catholics from Bombay migrate to Canada and 20,000+ Catholics immigrate to Australia as per figures released by Canadian Immigration Officials and Australian Immigration Officials to English- Edition News Papers published in Bombay.

Finally, This Anti- Conversion Law has made Catholics in Southern India quite bold in terms of coming forward and giving their Sons as Vocations to the Priesthood and to the Religious Life.

In Christ,

Could you elaborate? AFAIK, the 'Corporate World' in Bombay is dominated by non-Hindus, namely the Parsis (Zoroastrians). The House of Tatas.

Besides,

Vivek Paul (born 1958), an alumnus of BITS Pilani, and until recently the Vice Chairman of Wipro Limited and CEO of Wipro Technologies in India, was declared among the best managers in the world by the Business Week in 2004. He was also named by Time and CNN amongst the most influential business persons in the world. In 2005, he was named among the top 30 CEO's in the world by Barrons.

Just because, there are two States in Southern India that are ruled by Christians -- that does not mean that "Extremist Hindu Groups" like the R.S.S., V.H.P., Bajrang Dal, HJM, and Hindu Munnani as in the case of Tamil Nadu do not exist.

They definitely do exist and have been making life impossible for Christians as well as for Catholics for a number of years.

I will illustrate this with an example. In May 2005, Two Pentecostal Pastors were brutally killed on the outskirts of Hyderabad by V.H.P. Activists. The Hyderabad Police arrested a number of V.H.P. Activists later in July 2005 and then in August 2005 arrested the brains behind the brutal murder of those two Pastors.

Attacks on Catholic, baptist, and Pentecostal Churches are a regular feature in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala by Bajrang Dal and V.H.P. Activists. This has been going on for a number of years.

Another Example. In Trivandrum in 2004,The Missionaries of Charity (Nuns) were attacked by R.S.S. Activists and were asked to leave Trivandrum. There have also been attacks on Catholic, Syro Malabar, and Pentecostal Churches since 1999 in various parts of Kerala by Bajrang Dal as well as by R.S.S. Activists.

If these are not examples of ongoing Persecution of Christians by the R.S.S. and its affiliates then I do not know what is persecution. You must be having a different definition of persecution as compared to me.

Tell me , and be honest , what is more important for Indian christians , their country or their religion ? For us hindus , our country is always more important than our faith.

yeah right!! if you go around abusing hindus and their gods, calling them satanic and indulge in hindu bashing in the name of caste, idol worship dont expect them to love you. i have seen disgusting behavior by some so called christian groups out there. i was in an airport in southern india and met a western couple who shared their "views on hinduism" with a fellow western christian. i was disgusted. these arent christians but jihadis wrapped in a cloak of christ.

stop your hatred of pacifist religions like hinduism, buddhism etc. if you keep pushing these people they will retaliate. we all known there are trouble makers that want to start a mini war against hindus.

mainstream conservatives have no issue with hinduism. go and worship in peace and be great americans (and indians).

Yes, I will elaborate. Indian Companies like Reliance are most unwilling to recruit or employ Christians or Catholics as the case may be.

In any City in India, a Christian or a Catholic needs to have a GodFather, GodMother, An Uncle, or an Aunt, or just hard core influence to get a job. Influence is something that most Christians or Catholics do not have in the Corporate World in Bombay or for that matter in any City in India -- unlike other communities like Sikhs, Muslims, or Hindus who have their own Companies.

I have personally experienced immense discrimination in the Corporate World as a Christian Legal Professional. If it was not for a Parsi Legal Professional who I am presently working for I would be unemployed or jobless.

Merit simply does not exist in the Corporate World in India as it does exist in the Corporate World in the West.

If it was not for Multinational B.P.O's and Multinational Companies large numbers of Christian and Catholic Men and Women would be umemployed. These Multinational Companies have definitely a much better attitude to employing Christians as well as Catholics as compared to most Indian Companies.

Finally, You have mentioned the House of Tatas. They are only "one" among many Indian Companies that are owned by non Hindus namely Parsis.

Obviously, someone among youall has called me a Liar and last week to make matters worse -- some one had the gall to call me a Pathetic Liar and A Paki.

Please do not post any comments to me anymore.

For me as well as for most Indian Christians and Indian Catholics -- The Country that is India as well as Freedom of Religion is important.

Both are Important. That is why Catholics and Christians from a number of Cities in India like Bombay have been leaving in droves -- because they see no future in this country for themselves and more importantly for their children.

When the B.J.P. was ruling India from 1998-2004 -- migration by Christian Families from India to any country in the West kept on increasing month after month and Year after Year.

It is still increasing. I have said more than I have to.

If you all want, you can go ahead and attack me. I have never forcibly converted any Hindu or anyone in my life in any part of India and most Christians do not Missionaries included Indian as well as Foreign.

As for you describing yourself as an Indian, why fly the Portuguese flag on your homepage? Mind you, as an 'Indian', you have the freedom to do this, but it speaks volumes of where your true sympathies lie.

Surely Americans would find it insulting if Latinos of Mexican descent began flying the Mexican flag, as was the case last week. Besides, I've noticed you have immense personal grudges against a/some Hindus, which you are taking on the whole community. Would you now demand reparations?

I am not a frustrated loser. I have stated the truth.

BTW, I am a First Class First and I graduated in Law with a distinction. I am just making things clearer for you.

I am not blaming the country for no rhyme or reason. There is abundant evidence that there is discrimination against Christians in the Corporate World in a number of cities in India. You would not understand that would you.

If you have never been in our Shoes -- How can I expect you to understand what is going on in the Christian Community ?

I also have the requisite skills and I am not the only one ranting away at an Annonymous Internet Message Board -- Why are you Guys here ? You all are also posting Comments annonymously -- I am not the only one.

I am not the only one here.

I know a number of Christians who are my age and have suffered Discrimination. They are all migrating to Australia or Canada or have got jobs in the United States and are leaving in the near future.

There is no need to make mean remarks like -- If I have studied harder in my youth. When obviously I did or else i would never have got a First Class for my UnderGraduate Degree as well as Graduate Degree in Law.

Again, you wouldn't understand where I am coming from and stop calling Freeper NYer a Christian Fanatic.

I do not have any personal problems. There are many Christian Men and Women who are in the same boat as me.

That is all I have to say. Please do not post any nasty comments to me as I do not have time to answerr them one after another after another.

BTW, The neigborhood where I live was predominantly Christian 10 -15 years ago as a result of constant migration to countries in the West -- The Neigborhood has become predominantly Muslim.

You mean to say there are no Christian extremists in India, who take up violence?

Well, think again.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/para/ndfb.htm

The National Democratice Front of Bodoland (NDFB)

The NDFB is led by its chairman, Ranjan Daimary, also known as D. R. Nabla. The group was formed to attain a "sovereign Bodoland" in the region to the north of river Brahmaputra. In addition the group protests the current script of the Bodo language written in the Devnagri script. The NDFB is primarly comprised of Christians who prefer the Roman script. NDFB have committed scores of incidents of violence like murders, bomb explosions, kidnapping for ransom etc. which have had a serious bearing on the law and order situation of the state. According to the Union Home Ministry's 1996-97 report, a total of 201 persons were killed in Assam between April 1996 and March 1997, 174 which were attributed to the NDFB.

If I have been constantly attacked, since January 2006 by you all-- Do you still expect me to fly the Indian Flag.

As long as I am not flying the Pakistani Flag or the Flag of any Islamic Country what is your problem?

Or will you now tell me that I do not have Freedom to do what I want. I have never attacked you all. Why are you all assuming I am prejudiced against Hindus. I have only stated some bare facts.

I just feel culturally closer to the Portuguese and that is it. I an culturally similar to them. I am not in any conspiracies against you all or against Hindus.

I have not attacked Hindus. Rather, when I post a credible article every one jumps on me.

That is all I have to say. I am frankly fed up of this hate rhetoric.

I understand perfectly well. In Bangalore, we have St. Joseph's College. It is state-funded.

A Catholic who scores 85% on his ICSE class X boards can walk in for a seat there. A Hindu/Muslim/Sikh/Protestant etc cannot expect to get a seat there for less than 91%. What do you have to say about this?

Besides, state-funded Christian schools are famous when it comes to demanding hefty "donations" from the non-Christian students who study there. Examples include Bishop Cotton's Boys' High School, St. Francis Xavier's, St. Germains, etc., all in Bangalore.

Could this sort of rampant discrimination be the reason for most of the top-command of the RSS happen to be educated in Christian schools (state, viz. Indian taxpayer-funded, mind you )?

Haha...if you are so smart , you should have started your own law firm rather than complain about not getting a job because you are an x'tian. Quit complaining. I cannot think of anybody who was not given a job in India because he/she was an x'tian. Christians have a high representation in the Indian Army and Police , much higher than their actual share in the population of the country. And the leader of India's ruling political party - that Sonia Gandhi , is a christian as well. (not that I like her too much.)The guy in the cubicle next to mine is an x'tian as well...

As I said , stop complaining. Work harder. Update your skills. Stop acting as a loser.

And yes , that is not possible , please migrate if that makes you happy. We already got 1.1 billion people. You wont be missed. Ta-Ta.

why are you constantly changing the topic ? If you have nothing positive to say about Christians and Catholics -- don't say anything. That would be much better.

Now, you are speaking about Insurgency in the North- East -- what has that got to do with the Subject Matter of this Thread ?

Please respect what has been posted on this Thread. I did not post this Thread. Why are you and others dragging me into a needless controversy ?

This Thread is not attacking Hindus. It is all about Vocations to Seminaries in Southern India by Catholics who live in Southern India.

Haha... but I get it. I fully understand where this is coming from..... Immigration to US is very strict. It seems you all do not want to hear about Christians being persecuted in India nor about discrimination in India that Christians are facing. So why post your comments to me.

Let us go our separate ways. I have never attacked you all personally. Why is Raj constantly engaging in personal attacks on me. I have refrained from personal attacks and I will always refrain from personal attacks either against you all or any one.

Save your crocodile tears. People will always look for better economic opportunity. The economics is quite simple. As long as US or Canada boast per capita incomes in mutiples of that of poorer third world countries , people from such countries will always look to migrating to US.

The issue I have is with the propaganda spread by this idiot SOLDIEROFJESUSCHRIST that christians are being prosecuted against in India and bs about being denied employment because of his religion. Which is a blatant lie.

How would you feel if a black or a muslim American tells you how much he hates America and cannot get a job there because of his color/faith ?

If you put your faith before your country , if you see yourself as part of some global x'tian ummah , like the muslims , dont expect to find much sympathy for you from the Indian people.

So I guess by that logic, we should have laws here preventing Americans converting to Hinduism or preventing Hindus from practicing their religion since after all, American Hindus' loyalty to India must come before loyalty to the US. Actually, people can and do all the time have multiple loyalties that coexist, to family, faith, country, etc. Most of the time they are not in conflict. And unfortunately, in this country there is a little thing called the Constitution which guarantees no establishment of religion and prevents the free exercise thereof. Freedom of religion is a fundamental human right. Furthermore, Christians are no Moslems and do not advocate the combination of church and state in an Ummah and never have. And they certainly are not advocating an established Christian church in India. Don't be ridiculous.

Actually he was referring to the said person's claim that he's Indian, while at the same time showing allegiance to the Portuguese flag.

Reminds me of the illegals' Mexican-flag waving antics.

As for banning conversions, it is not exactly what the bill(not yet law) states. It bans conversions by coercion and incitement. It is powerless against individual conversions.

Israel enacted similar laws way back in 1977.

Interesting. Government first, then faith. This, in a country where where 60 per cent of the world's leprosy patients live. The Government of Gujarat has stopped the services of the Catholic Sisters who were administering and providing medical services to the Narol Leprosy Hospital. Yes, what a wonderful country where one out of 6 Indians is branded as impure, from the moment of birth.

The christian places God first, then country. There are two great commandments:

Jesus said the greatest and the first commandment is:

‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind’.

And the second is like it:

‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself’.

Mother Teresa followed these commandments. 50 years ago, she found a woman "half eaten by maggots and rats" lying in front of a Calcutta hospital. The diminutive Roman Catholic nun sat with the woman until she died. Soon after, she began a campaign for a shelter for people to die with dignity. In an abandoned temple to the Hindu goddess Kali, Mother Teresa founded the Kalighat Home for the Dying.

What do your Hindu gods say about caring for the sick, poor and dieing?

Father Prasad revealed that there was growing "political pressure" to limit the growth of the Church with a new anti-conversion law introduced in the state of Tamil Nadu: Preaching in public is forbidden and would-be converts to Christianity now face a barrage of paperwork thrust upon them by government officials.

Hindu tolerance at its best!

I can hardly wait for the Hindu night killings to begin, with Christian convert-martyrs turning up in drainage ditches in remote rural areas.

Paganism - Semper Idem - from Rome to India.

Dont worry. In India too freedom of faith is a fundamental right. Otherwise how would you explain the fact that in a country with 80% hindu population , supposedly fascists at that if one goes by some of the propaganda here , the President of the country is a muslim , the Prime Minister is a Sikh , the leader of the ruling political party is a Catholic , and the Chief of Armed Forces is a Sikh ?

The issue is with forced conversions or conversions done using alurements , as well as the abuse of hinduism done by some fanatic x'tian missionaries. That cannot be tolerated.

Ask yourself - all those missionaries , why are they in India and why not in Saudi Arabia , Pakistan and other Islamic nations ?

This is why > "In Saudi Arabia, one cannot carry Bible or any other non-Islamic religious book, nor can there exist any Church, temple or synagogue. In so-called modern democratic Muslim states, such as Bangladesh and Pakistan, non-Muslims are routinely being harassed, their young girls are being abducted and forcefully married to Muslims, they are being evicted from their homes, lands and properties and their religious places of worships are being attacked and destroyed."

In China - foreign missionaries are not allowed entry. Chinese pastors are routinely imprisoned , tortured.

So its only in pacifist , law abiding , peaceful societies like the hindus society and secular , friendly , countries like India that the fanatic bigoted racist x'tian missionaries can carry out their soul harvesting fantasies. Even if they meet a little resistance , they make a hue and cry of it. As we have seen here.

Why? Because you no longer believe Mother Cow gave birth to your ancestors?

This sounds like a "real Indians can only be Hindu" type of argument.

Of course Christians are part of a global brotherhood. That has absolutely nothing to do with their nationality.

Mother Teresa and her Missionary of Charity. Great PR they got. You think they are the only people who have taken care of the poor ? Just a mile from the Missionary of Charity center , there is a hindu organisation called Ramkrishna Mission. They have a hospital that provides free medical care , schools all over the country for poor children etc. Ramkrishna Mission is lot bigger than Missionary of Charity and takes care of 100 times more poor people. But you never heard of them. Why ? They are a hindu organisation. And you think only Mother Teresa cares for the poor.

I dont know what our 'hindu gods' as you so condescendingly put them tell us...I never spoken to them. I bet your x'tian god talks to you a lot.

It seems you are a frustrated loser.Stop blaming the country or outside forces for your personal problems. Perhaps had you studied harder in your youth or picked up the requisite skills , you wouldn't be ranting this way on anonymous internet message boards about being discriminated against by nations , systems , corporations etc.

You should thank your lucky stars that Christians in India feel generous enough to run most of your schools and hospitals. Otherwise you'd probably have died in ignorance years ago on a dungheap from gastrointestitis.

Hindu bigotry was easy enough for me to see as a Westerner when I visited India for an extended period in 1996.

Surely Americans would find it insulting if Latinos of Mexican descent began flying the Mexican flag, as was the case last week.

I'm not insulted. Of course, I'm an American who likes to fly the Siwss flag.
