Since Sister Faustina has been canonized, meaning that her claims have been approved by the Church, I will believe them. She would not be St. Faustina if they were heretical as you claim.

* If you ask me, private revelation is the work of demons or at least the work of Sr. Faustina's imagination. I don't believe it's from Christ. Explain to me why Sr. Faustina's diary was suppressed by every pope prior to JP2.*

We are not obligated to believe in any private revelations.
My understanding is that it was a poor translation (Polish into Italian).

*Her diary even was placed on the Index of Prohibited Books.*

Because Sr. Faustina was all but illiterate, her diary was written phonetically and almost without punctuation and quotation marks. A poor translation reached Rome, which condemned the book as heretical in 1958. When Karol Wojtyla became Archbishop of Krakow, he was faced with a delicate problem -- many people in his Church were intensely devoted to these writings, even calling Faustina a saint. He was advised to start an investigation into the matter. In the course of his study, he had a new translation made, which resulted in the removal of Rome's condemnation of the writings, just six months before he was elected Pope." (copied from ZENIT)

Polish Nun Died at 33 Leaving World Message of Divine Mercy"

*I stand my ground, the Divine Mercy has no place on the Church calendar during Pascha.*

When you die, be sure to tell Jesus Christ himself that is how you feel.

So, I assume you are a Byzantine Catholic. You are not obligated to observe Divine Mercy Sunday. That's fine.

As a new Catholic, I am puzzled why you are making such an attack on a Latin Rite feast day. I don't suppose you would appreciate it if we attacked your feast days.

The Sacred Congregation issues a new "Notification" which states: "This Sacred Congregation, having now in possession the many original documents, unknown in 1959; having taken into consideration the profoundly changed circumstances, and having taken into account the opinion of many Polish Ordinaries, declares no longer binding the prohibitions contained in the quoted "Notification" (of 1959)." Because it is theologically incorrect to have a devotion focusing on a penitential theme during the Paschal season, which is a time of joy.

"For the sake of his sorrowful passion, have Mercy on us" has no place during a season when we should be celebrating Christ's victory over death.

I know that many Traditionalists would agree with me on that note at least.

There are numerous saints on the calendar who have made heretical statements in the past.

I would say her canonization was a mistake.

The pope is a monarch and may do as he likes.

Well, the joy of Easter was only made possible by the suffering and sacrifice Our Lord made on Good Friday. They are all of a piece. Easter means nothing without understanding the Passion. Divine Mercy reminds us that his sorrowful passion paid the price for us, and that the Resurrection demonstrated his triumph.

Go ahead with your nit-picking. I disagree, as I am sure you have realized.

My response is simple. John Paul II was a Pole as was Sr. Faustina.

I am not prepared to say that the Divine Mercy is from Jesus Christ. If you ask me Sr. Faustina's diary smacks of a form of Gnosticism, or hidden esoteric fantasies.

It is not a matter of dogma, and I am proud that my Church stays true to its calendar and refuses to add this innovation.

It is a season of joy, not of sorrow. Jesus' death on the cross was not sorrowful, it was the veiled victory completed on the third day.

No, it is not nitpicking.

The feast should either be suppressed or translated to another day outside of Pascha.

Take it up with the Pope. I am obedient to the Church, and if they say it is Divine Mercy Sunday, I will observe it as such.

In case you haven't noticed, we don't get to vote, and people not in the Latin Rite aren't obigated to observe it. What then is your gripe? No one is forcing you to observe it.

Myself, I think that Christ's Divine Mercy is a cause for great joy.

Because we happen to be in communion with you, that's why.

It belongs in Lent or some other penitential season.

I would say her canonization was a mistake.

I believe most orthodox Catholic theologians agree that canonizations are infallible Papal acts. (Ludwig Ott, for example, says so on p. 299 of the English edition of "Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma".)

One can say that her canonization was perhaps prudentially unwise, but it would not seem to be within the bounds of Catholic orthodoxy to assert that St. Faustina is not enjoying the beatific vision, as well as perhaps the sin of rash judgement.

So I assume you meant the former, not the latter. ;-)

Of course, her canonization does not make her private revelations any more (or less) authoritative. It's a claim about the state of her soul and its salvation, not about her private revelations.

However, if her revelations are not from Christ, she was either seriously misled (and perhaps in frequent contact with a demonic entity) or lying. Neither status is especially consistent with the heroic sanctity characteristic of a canonized saint.

Her confessors and superiors at the time, who were holy priests and nuns, came to the conclusion that her revelations were genuine. That, along with the later approval of the Church for her cause for sainthood, is sufficient evidence for me.

It belongs in Lent or some other penitential season.

If it's based on a false revelation, it doesn't belong in any season at all.

If it's based on a true revelation, then Jesus Christ Himself ordered it to be celebrated on this day, not on any other. His liturgical taste trumps yours, I think. :-)

*I am not prepared to say that the Divine Mercy is from Jesus Christ.*

Just because this devotion didn't touch you/speak to you I don't think you have to try to ruin it for other people. You are putting a lot of energy into something you don't believe in. It's ok that you don't believe in this devotion -- maybe you have another devotion. I for one, do believe in this devotion. I am a very firm believer in this devotion. In my mind, in my heart I *know* that this is from Jesus Christ.

I am ending my participation in this thread.

We Byzantines don't practice special devotions to this or that, but rather devote ourselves to the corporate prayer of the Church found in the Book of Hours (Horologion), our equivalent of the old Breviary.

It's a matter of private revelation, which by definition is not binding on all Catholics.

Pious private devotion.That's it.
