May Devotion: Blessed Virgin Mary

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Toward the end of the eighteenth century a zealous Jesuit priest, Father Lalomia, started among the students of the Roman college of his Society the practice of dedicating May to Our Lady. The devotion, which others had promoted in a small way, soon spread to other Jesuit Colleges and to the entire Latin church and since that time it has been a regular feature of Catholic life.

Saint John Vianney, better known as the Cure of Ars, when asked how long he had loved Mary, said: "I loved her almost before I could know her." In this prayer he expresses that love.
O thou most holy virgin Mary, who dost evermore stand before the most holy Trinity, and to whom it is granted at all times to pray for us to thy most beloved Son; pray for me in all my necessities; help me, combat for me, and obtain for me the pardon of all my sins. About the Angelus

195. The Angelus Domini is the traditional form used by the faithful to commemorate the holy annunciation of the angel Gabriel to Mary. It is used three times daily: at dawn, mid-day and at dusk. It is a recollection of the salvific event in which the Word became flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary, through the power of the Holy Spirit in accordance with the salvific plan of the Father.

The recitation of the Angelus is deeply rooted in the piety of the Christian faithful, and strengthened by the example of the Roman Pontiffs. In some places changed social conditions hinder its recitation, but in many other parts every effort should be made to maintain and promote this pious custom and at least the recitation of three Aves. The Angelus "over the centuries has conserved its value and freshness with its simple structure, biblical character [...] quasi liturgical rhythm by which the various time of the day are sanctified, and by its openness to the Paschal Mystery" (231).

It is therefore "desirable that on some occasions, especially in religious communities, in shrines dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, and at meetings or conventions, the Angelus be solemnly recited by singing the Ave Maria, proclaiming the Gospel of the Annunciation" (232) and by the ringing of bells.

History of the Angelus

The Angelus is a short devotion in honor of the Incarnation, repeated three times each day, morning, noon, and evening, at the sound of the bell. It consists essentially in the triple repetition of the "Hail Mary", to which in later times have been added three introductory versicles, and a concluding versicle and prayer.

During the Easter season, the Regina Coeli (Queen of Heaven) replaces the usual arrangement of the Angelus prayers. The Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen) is often recited as the concluding prayer.

The devotion derives its name from the first word of the three versicles, Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ (The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary).

The origins of the Angelus are somewhat obscure, but it seems clear they are rooted in monastic prayers of the hours, and even in its earliest form included the three "Hail Marys". Originally the Angelus prayers were said at Complin (night prayer), and over the years mid-day and morning hours were added. By the early seventeenth century the formula of prayers exactly as we know it today was complete.

 

The Angelus Bells

The triple "Hail Mary" was closely associated with the ringing of a bell, a practice apparently derived from the monastic tradition of Complin. The three interrupted peals of the Ave bell probably served as an introduction to the continuous tolling of the curfew that preceded Matins (morning prayer).

The manner of ringing the Angelus -- the triple stroke repeated three times, with a pause between each set of three (a total of nine strokes), which might be followed by a longer peal as at curfew -- seems to have been in place from the very beginning. In the fifteenth-century constitutions of Syon monastery, it is directed that the lay brother "shall toll the Ave bell nine strokes at three times, keeping the space of one Pater and Ave between each three tollings".

Bells dedicated to the Angelus can be found throughout Europe -- inscriptions include: Ave Maria and O Rex Gloriæ Veni Cum Pace (O King of Glory, Come with Peace). A number of European Angelus bells are dedicated to Saint Gabriel, with inscriptions including: Dulcis instar mellis campana vecor Gabrielis (I am sweet as honey, and am called Gabriel's bell) and Missus vero pie Gabriel fert læta Mariæ (Gabriel the messenger bears joyous tidings to holy Mary.)

A fifteenth-century bell at Erfert bears the words: Cum ter reboo, pie Christiferam ter aveto (When I ring thrice, thrice devoutly greet the Mother of Christ). Though the practice of saying the Angelus declined in the latter half of the twentieth century, many parishes continue the tradition of ringing the Angelus bells, traditionally at 6:00 a.m., noon and 6:00 p.m.

196. By disposition of Benedict XIV (2 April 1742), the Angelus is replaced with the antiphon Regina Coeli during paschaltide. This antiphon, probably dating from the tenth or eleventh century(233), happily conjoins the mystery of the Incarnation of the Word (quem meruisti portare) with the Paschal event (resurrexit sicut dixit). The ecclesial community addresses this antiphon to Mary for the Resurrection of her Son. It adverts to, and depends on, the invitation to joy addressed by Gabriel to the Lord's humble servant who was called to become the Mother of the saving Messiah (Ave, gratia plena).

As with the Angelus, the recitation of the Regina Coeli could sometimes take a solemn form by singing the antiphon and proclaiming the Gospel of the resurrection.

Thanks. We were making sure that our daughter was ready for her First Communion. The CCD workbook from Harcourt was pretty bad.

So we spent March and April with St. Joseph's First Communion and doses of Baltimore Catechism with My Catholic Faith. We didn't want her to think that it was just a "family meal" which the Harcourt stuff seemed to convey. (Anything with the word "Gather" as a section title is suspect in my eyes...LOL!)

My favorite devotion? Shoot, I have quite a few. After the Rosary, I'd say my favorite is a three way tie between the Salve Regina, the Memorare of St. Bernard, and the Sub Tuum Praesidium. I will say that for this month, I am praying the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin in the morning and evening (morning and evening prayer).

The Akathist Hymn and Small Compline are two services which are sung on the first five Fridays during Great Lent.

The Small Compline, which begins on page 1 and continues up to the canon on page 7, is sung on each of the five Fridays. This is also true of the prayers beginning with "Holy God" on page 29 and continuing to the end of the service with the exception that the Holy Gospel is read only on the First Friday.

On each of the first four Fridays the canon is sung beginning on page 7 through page 16. At the same time, one of the four stases is also chanted by the Priest on each successive Friday. See text for directions.

On the Fifth Friday, when the entire two services are sung, including all four stases, the order is as follows: The first 7 pages are sung followed by the first stasis (pages 16‑19). Then the first and third odes are chanted (pages 7‑9). This is followed by the second stasis (pages 19‑22). Then the fourth, fifth, and sixth odes are sung (pages 9‑15), followed by the third stasis (pages 22‑25). The seventh, eighth, and ninth odes are sung (pages 12‑15), followed by the fourth stasis (p. 25 ‑ ) and the remainder of the service to page 36.

Preface

Holy Cross Orthodox Press is pleased to offer a new revised bilingual edition of the Akathist Hymn and Small Compline to the faithful of the Greek Orthodox Church.

This edition is a successor to the one published by Holy Cross in 1990 and authored by myself and Hieromonk Serapheim (Dedes) of the Monastery of St. Paul on Mount Athos. Due to personal reasons, Hieromonk Serapheim requested that his name be removed from that edition. This led naturally to a complete revision of that edition with the collaboration of my colleague Professor Evie‑Marie Zachariades Holmberg of the Greek Department of Hellenic College. Nonetheless, this edition continues to owe much to Hieromonk Serapheim.

We hope that this edition of the Akathist and the Small Compline will be received by the faithful and clergy with the same enthusiasm as the other liturgical publications of Holy Cross Orthodox Press.

Now it only remains to thank a number of individuals who contributed to this volume: Metropolitan Demetrios Trakatellis and Father Theodore Stylianopoulos for their valuable advice. Many thanks are also due to Fathers Alkiviadis Calivas and George Papademetriou for graciously reviewing portions of the Greek and English texts. THE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten not created, of one essence with the Father through whom all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and He suffered and was buried. On the third day He rose according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who together with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke through the prophets. In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I expect the resurrection of the dead. And the life of the ages to come. Amen.

It is truly worthy to bless you, the Theotokos, the ever blessed and most pure and mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, incorruptibly you gave birth to God the Word. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

Apolytikion. Eighth Tone

When the bodiless learned of the secret command, he came in haste to Joseph's house and said to her who knew not wedlock: He who bowed the heavens by coming down is contained wholly and unchanged in you. Seeing him take the form of a servant in your womb, I stand in awe and cry out to You: Rejoice, 0 Bride unwedded.

0 Theotokos, living and abundant fountain, strengthen those united in spiritual fellowship who sing hymns of praise to you. And in your divine glory, deem them worthy of crowns of glory.

Rejoice, untilled land which has sprouted the divine ear of wheat. Rejoice, living table which has held the bread of life. Rejoice, 0 Lady, never empty font of living water.

Rejoice, 0 heifer that gave birth to the unblemished calf for the faithful. Rejoice, 0 ewe that conceived the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Rejoice, 0 warm mercy seat, our fervent intercessor. Glory

Rejoice, luminous morning that alone brings Christ the Sun. Rejoice, dwelling place of light, dispeller of darkness who has diminished utterly the darkened demons.

Rejoice, only gate that only the Logos has gone through, for in your giving birth you shattered the bars and gates of Hades. Rejoice, all‑laudable, divine entrance of those who are being saved.

He who sits in holy glory, on the throne of Divinity, on a swift cloud came Jesus the transcendent God, and by his undefiled hand has saved those who cry Out; Glory be to Your power, 0 Christ.

In voices of song faithfully we rejoice all‑laudable One. Rejoice, rich mountain flowing with the milk of the Spirit. Rejoice, lamp and golden jar containing the manna which sweetens the senses of the devout.

We sing hymns to you crying: Rejoice, 0 chariot Of the spiritual Sun. Rejoice, 0 true vine that cultured the ripened cluster dripping with wine, making glad the souls of all who faithfully glorify you.

ODE EIGHT. THE EIRMOS

The pious youth within the furnace were rescued by the offspring of the Theotokos. He who was Prefigured then has been born on earth, and is gathering the entire universe to sing: Bless the Lord, all his works, and magnify him to the ages.

Most‑holy Theotokos, save us.

You received into your womb the Logos: you held in your arms the One who holds all things. With your milk You nourished him who with a nod nourishes the entire universe, 0 purest maiden, to whom we sing: Bless the Lord all his works, and magnify him to the ages.

The great mystery of your childbirth did Moses perceive within the burning bush. The youth vividly prefigured this, standing in the midst of fire and remaining unconsumed, 0 undefiled and

holy Virgin. We praise you therefore in hymns to the ages.

We who once by deceit were left naked have put on through your pregnancy the garments of incorruption, and we who sat in the darkness of our transgressions now have seen the light. We therefore praise you in hymns to the ages.

The dead have been given life by your power, for you gave birth to the spiritual life. They who once were speechless now are eloquent. Lepers are cleansed and diseases are exterminated. The multitude of aerial spirits are defeated, 0 Virgin, man's salvation.

Through you who did bear the world's salvation we were raised up from earth to heaven. Rejoice, all-blessed shelter, strength, wall, and fortification of all who sing: Bless the Lord, all his works, and magnify him to the ages.

ODE NINE. THE EIRMOS.

Let every mortal born on earth with festive lamps In hand, in spirit leap for joy; and you incorporeal angelic Powers in heaven celebrate, thus honoring the sacred feast of the Mother of God, and cry out: Rejoice, all-blessed one, ever‑virgin and pure Theotokos.

Most‑holy Theotokos, save us.

So that we may cry rejoice to you through whom we faithful have become sharers of eternal joy, 0 Maiden, rescue us from temptation, from enemy invasions, and from every other scourge which is bound to follow because of the multitude of transgressions due to the sins of mortals.

You were seen as our light and surety, we therefore shout to you: Rejoice, 0 unsetting star which leads the great Sun into the world. Rejoice, 0 pure one, for you opened Eden. Rejoice, fiery pillar ushering humankind to life on high.

Spare, 0 God, the sins of Your own inheritance by Overlooking all of, them now. Accept, 0 Christ, the fervent prayers of her who without seed conceived on earth and carried You who in Your great mercy will to take the form that was not Your own.

0 Champion General, we your faithful inscribe to you the prize of victory as gratitude for being rescued from calamity, 0 Theotokos. But since you have invincible power, free us from all kinds of perils so that we may cry out to you: Rejoice, 0 Bride unwedded.

Priest: The holy one, beholding herself in innocence, says to Gabriel: The incredible tidings of your voice appear difficult for my soul to accept. For how do you speak of childbirth from a seedless conception, crying: Alleluia.

Priest: Curious to know knowledge what is knowable to no one, the Virgin cried out to the ministering angel: How is it possible for a son to be born of pure loins? Tell me. To whom the angel answered in fear, crying out:

Prayer to the Theotokos

Spotless, undefiled, immaculate, unstained, pure Virgin, Lady, and Bride of God, by your wondrous conception you united God the Word with human beings and joined the fallen nature of our race to heavenly things. You are the only, hope of the hopeless, and the help of those oppressed. You are the ready protection of those who flee to you and the refuge of all Christians. Do not spurn me an accused sinner, though I have made myself completely useless by my shameful thoughts, words, and deeds and through indolence have become a slave to the pleasures of life. But as the Mother of God who loves all people, mercifully have compassion upon me a sinner and a prodigal and receive my prayer though it be offered to you by unclean lips. Prayer to our Lord Jesus Christ

Grant us, Master, as we depart for sleep, rest for body and soul. Protect us from the gloom of sinful sleep and from all dark pleasures of the night. Calm the impulses of passion, and quench the fiery darts of evil which are treacherously cast against us. Check the turbulence of our flesh and lull all our earthly and mundane thoughts. Grant us, 0 God, a watchful mind, prudent reason, a vigilant heart, and tranquil sleep, free from all evil fantasies. Raise us up at the hour of prayer, strengthen us in Your commandments, and keep unshaken within us the remembrance of Your judgments. Grant us to glorify You all night long that we may praise and bless and glorify Your all honorable and magnificent name, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. The Akathist Hymn and Small Compline are two services which are sung on the first five Fridays during Great Lent.

The Small Compline, which begins on page 1 and continues up to the canon on page 7, is sung on each of the five Fridays. This is also true of the prayers beginning with "Holy God" on page 29 and continuing to the end of the service with the exception that the Holy Gospel is read only on the First Friday.

On each of the first four Fridays the canon is sung beginning on page 7 through page 16. At the same time, one of the four stases is also chanted by the Priest on each successive Friday. See text for directions.

On the Fifth Friday, when the entire two services are sung, including all four stases, the order is as follows: The first 7 pages are sung followed by the first stasis (pages 16‑19). Then the first and third odes are chanted (pages 7‑9). This is followed by the second stasis (pages 19‑22). Then the fourth, fifth, and sixth odes are sung (pages 9‑15), followed by the third stasis (pages 22‑25). The seventh, eighth, and ninth odes are sung (pages 12‑15), followed by the fourth stasis (p. 25 ‑ ) and the remainder of the service to page 36.

Holy Cross Orthodox Press is pleased to offer a new revised bilingual edition of the Akathist Hymn and Small Compline to the faithful of the Greek Orthodox Church.

This edition is a successor to the one published by Holy Cross in 1990 and authored by myself and Hieromonk Serapheim (Dedes) of the Monastery of St. Paul on Mount Athos. Due to personal reasons, Hieromonk Serapheim requested that his name be removed from that edition. This led naturally to a complete revision of that edition with the collaboration of my colleague Professor Evie‑Marie Zachariades Holmberg of the Greek Department of Hellenic College. Nonetheless, this edition continues to owe much to Hieromonk Serapheim.

We hope that this edition of the Akathist and the Small Compline will be received by the faithful and clergy with the same enthusiasm as the other liturgical publications of Holy Cross Orthodox Press.

Now it only remains to thank a number of individuals who contributed to this volume: Metropolitan Demetrios Trakatellis and Father Theodore Stylianopoulos for their valuable advice. THE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten not created, of one essence with the Father through whom all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and He suffered and was buried. On the third day He rose according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who together with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke through the prophets. In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I expect the resurrection of the dead. And the life of the ages to come. Amen.

It is truly worthy to bless you, the Theotokos, the ever blessed and most pure and mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, incorruptibly you gave birth to God the Word. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

Apolytikion. Eighth Tone

When the bodiless learned of the secret command, he came in haste to Joseph's house and said to her who knew not wedlock: He who bowed the heavens by coming down is contained wholly and unchanged in you. Seeing him take the form of a servant in your womb, I stand in awe and cry out to You: Rejoice, 0 Bride unwedded.

He who sits in holy glory, on the throne of Divinity, on a swift cloud came Jesus the transcendent God, and by his undefiled hand has saved those who cry Out; Glory be to Your power, 0 Christ.

People: The godly‑minded did not adore creation but the Creator, and bravely trampling upon the threat of the fire they rejoiced chanting: Blessed are You 0 supremely praised, 0 Lord and God of our fathers.

We sing hymns to you crying: Rejoice, 0 chariot Of the spiritual Sun. Rejoice, 0 true vine that cultured the ripened cluster dripping with wine, making glad the souls of all who faithfully glorify you.

The ends of the earth extol you, and cry out to you: Rejoice, scroll on which, 0 pure one, the Word was inscribed by the Father's finger. Intercede with him, 0 Theotokos, to enroll your servants in the book of life.

We your servants beseech you and bend the knee of' our heart to you. 0 pure one, lend us your ear in afflictions. And your city preserve, 0 Theotokos, from any destruction by the enemies.

ODE EIGHT. THE EIRMOS

The pious youth within the furnace were rescued by the offspring of the Theotokos. He who was Prefigured then has been born on earth, and is gathering the entire universe to sing: Bless the Lord, all his works, and magnify him to the ages.

Most‑holy Theotokos, save us.

You received into your womb the Logos: you held in your arms the One who holds all things. With your milk You nourished him who with a nod nourishes the entire universe, 0 purest maiden, to whom we sing: Bless the Lord all his works, and magnify him to the ages.

The great mystery of your childbirth did Moses perceive within the burning bush. The youth vividly prefigured this, standing in the midst of fire and remaining unconsumed, 0 undefiled and

holy Virgin. We praise you therefore in hymns to the ages.

We who once by deceit were left naked have put on through your pregnancy the garments of incorruption, and we who sat in the darkness of our transgressions now have seen the light. We therefore praise you in hymns to the ages.

The dead have been given life by your power, for you gave birth to the spiritual life. They who once were speechless now are eloquent. Lepers are cleansed and diseases are exterminated. The multitude of aerial spirits are defeated, 0 Virgin, man's salvation.

Prayer to the Theotokos

Spotless, undefiled, immaculate, unstained, pure Virgin, Lady, and Bride of God, by your wondrous conception you united God the Word with human beings and joined the fallen nature of our race to heavenly things. You are the only, hope of the hopeless, and the help of those oppressed. You are the ready protection of those who flee to you and the refuge of all Christians. Do not spurn me an accused sinner, though I have made myself completely useless by my shameful thoughts, words, and deeds and through indolence have become a slave to the pleasures of life. But as the Mother of God who loves all people, mercifully have compassion upon me a sinner and a prodigal and receive my prayer though it be offered to you by unclean lips. Entreat your Son and our Lord and Master, using your boldness as a mother, SO that he may open to me the loving mercy of his goodness, overlook my numberless transgressions, turn me to repentance, and make me an acceptable doer of his commandments. You are merciful, compassionate, and loving. Be my ardent help and protection in this present life, defending me from the assaults of adversaries, and lead me to salvation. Prayer to our Lord Jesus Christ

Grant us, Master, as we depart for sleep, rest for body and soul. Protect us from the gloom of sinful sleep and from all dark pleasures of the night. Calm the impulses of passion, and quench the fiery darts of evil which are treacherously cast against us. Check the turbulence of our flesh and lull all our earthly and mundane thoughts. Grant us, O God, a watchful mind, prudent reason, a vigilant heart, and tranquil sleep, free from all evil fantasies. Raise us up at the hour of prayer, strengthen us in Your commandments, and keep unshaken within us the remembrance of Your judgments. Grant us to glorify You all night long that we may praise and bless and glorify Your all honorable and magnificent name, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Prayer to our Lord Jesus Christ

Calm the impulses of passion, and quench the fiery darts of evil which are treacherously cast against us. Check the turbulence of our flesh and lull all our earthly and mundane thoughts. Grant us, 0 God, a watchful mind, prudent reason, a vigilant heart, and tranquil sleep, free from all evil fantasies. Raise us up at the hour of prayer, strengthen us in Your commandments, and keep unshaken within us the remembrance of Your judgments. Chapter 15.1 ‑7

The Lord said: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you . Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch can not bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. May the life of Blessed Mary be ever present to our awareness.

In her, as in a mirror, the form of virtue and beauty of chastity shrine forth.
She was virgin, not only in body, but in mind and spirit.
She never sullied the pure affection of her heart by unworthy feelings.
She was humble of heart.
She was serious in her conversations.
She was prudent in her counsels.
She was preferred to pray rather than to speak.
She united in her heart the prayers of the poor
And avoided the uncertainty of worldly riches.
She was ever faithful to hr daily duties,
Reserved in her conversations, and always accustomed to recognize God as the Witness of her thoughts.

This picture, somewhat mysterious in its origin, was discovered at the time of the 1918 armistice in the cellar of the boarding school where Berthe Petit, a humble Franciscan Tertiary, had been educated. After the troops had departed one of the Bernardine nuns in putting things in order found a piece of cardboard on which was pasted a pornographic picture and she tore it off to consign it to flames. To her astonishment she found that it covered this beautiful representation of the Blessed Virgin! It seems to combine the art of both the Eastern and the Western Rites. The facial features resemble those of the well known Pieta. Prayer before this picture has brought signal favors.

Confided by Our Lord to Berthe Petit: "Teach souls to love the Heart of My Mother pierced by the very sorrow which pierced Mine." [Dec. 25, 1909]

In Belgium of 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War a special baby girl was born, who was later to become a mystic. She was named Berthe Maria. Before she received any visions from Our Lord, she had received the invisible stigmata: in her humility she had begged that the marks not be made visible. The wounds were very painful for her, especially on Good Friday and other Fridays. She experienced the pains in her hands and feet and side. The worst pain of all was caused by the torment to her head which was like the pain of thorns pressing into her. This pain was so great and constant she slept but rarely.

It was not until she was 39 years old that the indication of her actual mission was made manifest: During Midnight Christmas Mass she saw the wounded Heart of Jesus and close by was the pierced Heart of His Mother. Then she heard these words:

"Cause My Mother's Heart, transfixed by sorrows that rent Mine, to be loved."

"The Heart of My Mother has the right to be called Sorrowful and I wish this title placed before that of Immaculate because she has won it herself. The Church has defined in the case of My Mother what I myself had ordained ---- Her Immaculate Conception. This right which My Mother has to a title of justice, is now, according to My express wish, to be known and universally accepted. She has earned it by her identification with My sorrows; by her sufferings; by her sacrifices and her immolation in Calvary endured in perfect correspondence with My grace for the salvation of mankind . . . " [Sept. 8, 1911]

"It is hearts that must be changed. This will be accomplished only by the Devotion proclaimed, explained, preached and recommended everywhere. Recourse to My Mother under this title I wish for her universally, is the last help I shall give before the end of time." [July 2, 1940]

O most loving Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ, thou who dost never reject nor despise anyone who turns to thee with a contrite heart nor refuse to console the afflicted, behold, poor and sinful, I draw near to thy holy image with deep devotion, and beseech thee to obtain for me the grace to honor and love thee with all my strength.

O merciful Heart of Mary, let me obtain mercy from thee as so many sinners already have obtained it; for what is thy Heart, O Mary, but a Heart of mercy? How is it possible, then, that grace could be refused to anyone who implores it from this seat of mercy?

Most tender and compassionate Mother, thou knowest how much an afflicted heart is in want of compassion, because the intensity of thy sufferings was so great that all mankind together would have been incapable of supporting it.

Oh, what unutterable bitterness filled thy soul when thou didst contemplate the disfigured form of thy beloved Son, when thou didst receive His mangled and lifeless Body into thy virginal arms, and pressing It tenderly to thy maternal heart, didst embrace It countless times, didst bedew It with a stream of burning tears, and finally didst rest thy agonizing heart on the wounded brow of thy Jesus!

I recall to thy mind this thy inexpressible anguish, and beseech thee to obtain for me the pardon of my sins. O Mary, intercede for me with Jesus, whom thou didst bear in thy arms! O Jesus! O Mary! by your unutterable suffering, have pity on me, a miserable sinner. O dearest Jesus, show to Thy Heavenly Father all the wounds and anguish which Thou didst bear for me! O sweetest Virgin, show Him all the tears which thou didst shed for me! O Son! O Mother! show Him all the agony, all the anguish of heart which you endured for me.

O Mary , I beseech thee, through this most painful mystery of thy dolors, obtain mercy for me from God the Father, and taking the mangled and dead Body of thy beloved Son into thy maternal arms, offer Him to the Eternal Father in the same manner as thou didst once offer Him His pierced Side and thy own broken Heart, His bitter sufferings and thy painful compassion, His and thy burning tears, His and thy sighs, in a word, everything which Jesus and thou suffered upon earth, that, through these same sufferings, thou mayest obtain mercy and pardon for me. Amen.

(In case anybody wonders, I have a particularly strong devotion to the Sorrowful Mother, and collect tidbits, links, and other bits about Mary under that title, along with writing my own stuff on her sorrows.)
