Just when you thought it was safe, there's a story out there that Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo will soon resurface with some interesting company....
Word quickly flying around indicates that the colorful Zambian prelate, who yet again went missing some weeks back and has been the subject of a missing-person search by his home government, skipped Rome in late June with George Augustus Stallings, patriarch of the breakaway African American Catholic Congregation, based in Washington.
Stallings, a onetime priest of the archdiocese of Washington, established his base at the Imani Temple, where he was ordained a bishop in the lineage of the Old Catholic Church in 1989. The AACC has since ordained women as priests and bishops.
An Italian news service reported in late June that, before leaving his residence at the community of Zagarolo, Milingo told the three religious women he lived with there that "I'm going and won't return again."
At his last disappearance in 2001, the retired archbishop of Lusaka who became famous in Italy for his free-flowing Charismatic healing services surfaced in New York where, at a ceremony of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church, he attempted a marriage with Maria Sung, a Korean acupuncturist.
Archbishop Milingo's Moonie Wedding set off a summer of high drama in the Italian media, ending with Milingo's reconciliation with John Paul II, a more stringent oversight for the his activities, and his separation from Sung, who charged that the Vatican was holding the archbishop hostage.
Stallings married his wife, Sayomi, a former Moon aide, at the same 2001 Unification church ceremony in which Milingo and Sung went public with their union. The couple have two children, and the AACC head is said to have kept close ties with Moon.
In a seismic move, it's being said that Milingo and Stallings are moving toward joining with Moon to form a Unification-backed Catholic group. Given Milingo's valid episcopal orders (he was ordained a bishop by Paul VI) and Stallings' record on the ordination of women and married men, to call the prospect a "mega-schism" in the making would be an understatement.
Indeed, it's enough to make your head explode.

Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo, the charismatic cleric whose "non-conventional" healing ministry, public marriage and call for an end to mandatory celibacy led to controversy with the Vatican, plans to embark on an independent charismatic ministry to reconcile married priests with the Catholic Faith. "There is no more important healing than the reconciliation of 150,000 married priests with the 'Mother Church,' and the healing of a Church in crisis through renewing marriage and family," notes the 76-year-old archbishop.Personally ordained by Pope Paul VI in 1969 at the young age of 39, Milingo was recalled to Rome in 1982 amidst controversy over his extraordinary healing powers. His ministry to "preach the Gospel, heal the sick and cast out devils" (Matt. 10:8, Mark 16:15, Luke 9:2) flourished in Europe, and his popularity grew despite efforts to restrict his ministry. Working from Rome under the protection of Pope John Paul II, his marriage to a South Korean acupuncturist in 2001 drew international media attention. His marriage was not recognized by the Church, and out of respect and love for the Holy Father, he honored the pontiff's request to return to his healing ministry in Rome.
"Archbishop Milingo is not seeking to defy or divide the (Roman Catholic) Church, but is acting out of deep love for the Church and concern for its future," notes Archbishop George Augustus Stallings, founder of the African American Catholic Congregation. Married priests from Italy, South America and the United States will join the archbishop as he launches a ministry for the renewal of family for the future of the Catholic Faith. "The Church has nothing to lose by allowing priests the option to marry. Historically, out of holy marriages have come priests, popes, and loving servants of God and the Church," Milingo says.

In a weekend interview, the Roman exorcist (Fr. Gabriel Amorth) accused Moon´s sect and, in particular, a sect family living in Rome, of having kidnapped and brainwashed the archbishop.
--Q: How did you learn this incredible news [of the wedding]?
--Father Amorth: People close to him told me a few days ago.
--Q: How can such a transformation happen?
--Father Amorth: Reconstructing the last years of his life, we realize that the Moonies have hunted him mercilessly. We have even identified the people who kidnapped him; they have brainwashed him. It is an Italian family in particular, which has disappeared with him in the United States.
For a long time now, many tried to attract him, premeditatedly and with great care. He has allowed himself to be caught.
--Q: It is difficult to think of an archbishop being subjected in this way.
--Father Amorth: They caught him at a time of discouragement and depression. ... He was weakened by the attacks he received.
He didn´t realize that he was a prey for which they had been working for a long time and, little by little, they succeeded and he gave in. Now, from my point of view, Milingo will not be able to recover, in part, because it´s no longer possible to approach him.
--Q: Is the Moonies´ power of submission that strong?
--Father Amorth: Those who follow this sect have a lethal method of "depersonalizing" people. I myself have had to deal with desperate parents of families, who lost one of their children, who vanished and ended up in the United States with this sect.
I have known cases of wives and husbands who have been kidnapped by the sect and have left their spouse and children. There are psychiatrists who have specialized in their recovery.
--Q: What do they do?
--Father Amorth: In the United States they are called "deprogrammers," because they release kidnapped or subjected people. Some have specialized in curing those kidnapped by this sect. Sometimes, the police themselves remove them from Moonie houses. Once deprogrammed, they can return to living.
--Q: How did you react to the news?
--Father Amorth: Absolutely surprised to see, precisely, that he, the archbishop, healer and exorcist, was able to fall into such a trap. Something like this can only be explained by brainwashing. I have known him for many years. He was a valid healer and, above all, an optimum preacher, releasing from demons.
We used to kid one another in a friendly way. As I am bald, he used to say to me: "Father Amorth, instead of hair you have a demon." I answered: "You are black with rage against the demon."
Absolutely frightening. Did the Moonies select him because of his healing powers? I never realized they were that powerful.

Oh, and here's His Holiness:
I remember Stallings, that is, I read about him. He was a Catholic priest until he was accused of molesting boys. Naturally, this qualified him to be supreme head of his own church. I didn't know he had promoted himself to the rank of patriarch.
Stallings is obviously excommunicated. JPII may have forgiven the Archbishop but I don't imagine B-16 will tolerate this situation.
Now, if the inquisition was still around...
African archbishop Milingo shocks Vatican - again

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Emmanuel Milingo, the African Catholic archbishop and faith healer who married in the Reverend Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church in 2001 but later returned to the fold, has scandalised the Vatican yet again.
Milingo went missing last month from a convent south of Rome where he had been living in near-seclusion for the past four years. He resurfaced in Washington on Wednesday.
Effectively making himself a renegade yet again from the Roman Catholic Church, he held a surprise news conference announcing that his new mission was to persuade the Vatican to allow priests to marry.
The Roman Catholic Church insists that its priests remain celibate and has ruled out letting them marry as a solution to the shortage of priests in many parts of the world.
A Vatican source said Church officials were "shocked" by Milingo's new outburst and said disciplinary measures could be announced soon.
Sanctions could be as severe as excommunication, the most serious penalty, which inflicts a total cut-off from the Church.
In 2001, the former archbishop of Lusaka, Zambia, stunned the Vatican when he disappeared and showed up in New York, where he married Maria Sung, a 43-year-old Korean woman chosen for him by the controversial South Korean-born evangelist Moon.
He attended a mass wedding in a tuxedo and kissing his white-gowned wife for the cameras in a ceremony in a New York hotel.
Milingo and Sung later came back to Italy separately. He said he wanted to return to the Church. She went on a hunger strike, gave bedside interviews in her hotel room and claimed the Vatican had kidnapped her husband.
The Vatican, which never recognised the marriage, threatened Milingo with excommunication.
The late Pope John Paul showed leniency and ordered his aides to try to bring him back into the fold.
Milingo left Sung, rejoined the Church and went into seclusion for a year of rehabilitation in South America before he returned to Italy and moved into a convent near Rome.
A Vatican source he did not expect Pope Benedict to be as kind now that Milingo had scandalised the Church for a second time.
In a book called "Fished out of the Mud," published four years ago, Milingo said the Moon Church may have brainwashed him. He refused to reveal if he consummated the marriage.
It was not clear if Milingo was now planning to reunite with Sung in the United States.
