Twentieth Doctor of The Church
The Church puts her hope in God from whom she receives her help ( Gradual ). Our Lord has healed the wounds of mankind ( Offertory ) and has given us strength and courage ( Introit ). The theme is infinite charity and the mercy of God. Blessed Apostle Saint Paul repeats to the Corinthians the miraculous transformation which has taken place in him through the grace of God ( Epistle ).
The healing of the deaf and dumb, related by Blessed Apostle Saint Mark, is the story of divine mercy towards each one of us ( Gospel ). Deaf to the teachings of the Master, we had become dumb by sin and incapable of praising God. But repeating, according to His command, what Christ did, the Church in baptism has opened our ears and loosed our tongue, so that henceforth we may hear the divine word and freely proclaim our faith.
Saint Bernard was born at the castle of Fontaines, in Burgundy near Dijon, in 1090. The grace of his person and the vigor of his intellect filled his parents with the highest hopes, and the world lay bright and smiling before him. But Bernard renounced it forever to join the monks of Citeaux, a few miles distant. Four of his brothers and a group of friends, thirty young Christians in all, went when he did to Citeaux, leaving the youngest brother, Nivard, to be the mainstay of his father in his old age. “You will now be heir to everything,” they said to him as they departed. “Yes,” said the boy; “you leave me the earth, and keep Heaven for yourselves; do you consider that fair?” And he too left the world. At length their aged father came also, exchanging wealth and honor for the poverty of a monk in the monastery of Clairvaux, which Bernard with a band of monks founded in the diocese of Langres in 1115. One sister alone remained behind; she was married, and loved the world and its pleasures. Splendidly clothed, one day she came to visit Bernard, and he refused to see her. He finally consented to do so, not as her brother but as the minister of Christ. The words he then spoke moved her so deeply that two years later she retired to a convent with her husband’s consent, dying later in the reputation of sanctity.
Saint Bernard’s holy example attracted so many novices that many other monasteries had to be built. Unsparing for himself, he at first expected too much of his monks, who were disheartened by his severity. Soon perceiving his error, he led them forward to wonderful perfection by the sweetness of his correction and the mildness of his government.
In spite of his desire to remain secluded, the fame of his sanctity spread far and wide, and many dioceses asked for him as their bishop. Through the help of Pope Eugenius III, his former subject, he escaped this dignity. Nonetheless, his retirement was continually invaded. The poor and the weak sought his protection; bishops, kings, and popes applied to him for advice; and at length Pope Eugenius himself ordered him to preach the crusade. By his fervor, eloquence, and miracles Bernard kindled the enthusiasm of Christendom, and two large armies were organized. Their defeat was only due, said the Saint, to their sins, but many had saved their souls by their dedication to the glory of God. Bernard died in 1153. His very precious writings have earned for him the title of the last Father of the Holy Church and one of its most famous Doctors.

Brethren, I make known unto you the Gospel which I preached to you, which also you have received and wherein you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast after what manner I preached unto you, unless you have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all, which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures and that He was seen by Cephas, and after that by the eleven. Then He was seen by more than five hundred brethren at once of whom many remain until this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the Apostles. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
A word of warning: Many spend endless hours and endless fortunes mapping out their search for their niche in life, finding a means to the end that will assure their legacy and eventual destiny. They have searched the synagogues, the mosques, the masonic lodges, scientology, new age, do-it-yourselfism, eastern mysticism or what have you for the answers and, while they lie to themselves and others, in truth they have all come up empty for the only true path to everlasting happiness lies with one Man, the God Man as the sole source of salvation. The only road - the narrow way. All other avenues are useless.
"There is none like Him, Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. There is no other Messiah. No one else has shed His blood for us. No one else takes away the sins of the world. No one else fills us with Sanctifying Grace and the Holy Spirit. No one else intercedes for us at the right hand of the Father. No one else will welcome us into eternal life. They may trust in their Talmuds and their Korans, their Buddhas and their Krishnas. But Jesus Christ is the only Mediator between Heaven and earth, between the Father and humankind."
Note: In Father Louis Campbell's sermon for the Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost, his theme is that Jesus Christ is the Perfect Man, and indeed He is. Father reminds us that long before He was born, His story was being told in the Old Testament by the Prophets of Old. The people then did not fully grasp it just as the people today do not grasp it. Yet the Holy Scriptures are so clear that one wonders why all cannot see the evident truths set down by the Prophets and fulfilled in the accounts of the four Evangelists on the Source of all truth, the One Who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. In these troubled times those who reject this Manifest Truth are doing all they can to eradicate from memory of the masses any thought of or remembrance of Him, perverting the Natural Law, revising history to dare to announce He never existed, to denying the Holy Sacrifice which He Himself said 'Do this in remembrance of Me.' The Traditional Truth Patrol needs to rev it up a few notches and remind all of these very truths instead of bahhing with the rest of the spineless sheep as the hireling shepherds herd them closer to the slippery slope. We don't need road maps, we don't need innovations or novelties, we don't need to dialogue with other religions but only seek salvation in the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church which Jesus Himself founded on the approval of God the Father and to which He left His Spirit - the Holy Ghost. Through this Triune Divinity we have the perfect formula laid out in the perfect log of God's law and legacy for the only Link between Heaven and earth is the Second Person of the Trinity. It is foolish to look anywhere else as Father explains in his sermon "He has done all things well."
"He has done all things well" (Blessed Apostle Saint Mark 7:37). What things? "He has made both the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak," answers Blessed Apostle Saint Mark 7:37. But what more has He done for us?
We must first remember Who Jesus Christ is. He is the Man, Jesus of Nazareth, born of the Blessed Virgin Mary, legally the Son of Joseph, with relatives, friends and neighbors, a carpenter by trade, but a teacher and a miracle worker by calling, perfect in His human nature, not suffering the effects of Original Sin, since in Him there is no sin.
But Jesus Christ is also God, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, one with the Father and the Holy Ghost. With the Father and the Holy Ghost He is the Creator of the angelic choirs, the galaxies and the stars, the comets and the planets, the earth and all things that live.
But not content to be our Creator only, He also became our Redeemer. When Adam and Eve sinned and lost Sanctifying Grace for themselves and their descendants, God promised to send a Redeemer to rescue us from slavery and eternal loss. It was in fulfillment of this promise that He sent His Divine Son, Who took upon Himself our humanity. As the angels announced to the shepherds: "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which shall be to all the people; for today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you, Who is Christ the Lord" ( Blessed Apostle Saint Luke 2:10,11).
The coming of the Messiah and many of the details of His life were foretold by the prophets, as He explained to two of His disciples after His Resurrection: "And beginning then with Moses and with all the Prophets, He interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things referring to Himself" ( Blessed Apostle Saint Luke 24:27). Perhaps He spoke to them in words like this:

"My coming was first foretold in the Book of Genesis, when God promised Adam and Eve a Redeemer ( Genesis 3:15 ).

The patient Job spoke of Me from the midst of his sufferings: 'I know that my Vindicator lives, and that He will at last stand forth upon the dust; Whom I myself shall see…' ( Job 19:25 ).

Moses was referring to Me when he said to the Israelites: 'A prophet like me will the Lord, your God, raise up for you from among your own kinsmen; to him you shall listen' ( Deuteronomy 18:15 ).

Isaiah prophesied: 'Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son: and His name shall be called Emmanuel' ( Isaias 7:14 ). 'For a child is born to us, and a son is given to us, and the government is upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, God the Mighty, the Father of the world to come, the Prince of Peace' ( Isaias 9:6 ).

"The prophets also spoke of My sufferings. Isaiah called Me the Suffering Servant of God: 'Surely He has borne our infirmities and carried our sorrows: and we have thought of Him as it were a leper, and as one struck by God and afflicted. But He was wounded for our iniquities: He was bruised for our sins. The chastisement of our peace was upon Him: and by His bruises we are healed' ( Isaias 53:4,5 ).

Psalm 21 even gives details of My crucifixion: 'They have pierced My hands and My feet; I can count all My bones. They look on and gloat over Me; they divide My garments among them, and for My vesture they cast lots' ( Psalm 21: 17b-19 ).
Like the blood of the unblemished lamb which was sprinkled on the doorposts of the houses of the Israelites, so that the angel of death passed over, but took the firstborn of the Egyptians, so My Blood was poured out upon the Cross, so that those who believe in Me might be saved from eternal death.

"But it was My Father's will that I should rise again on the third day. David speaks prophetically in Psalm 16 about My Resurrection: 'Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices, my body, too, abides in confidence; because You will not abandon my soul to the nether world, nor will You suffer Your faithful one to undergo corruption' ( Psalm 16:9,10 ).

"And now I ascend to My royal throne at the right hand of My Father, and My Kingdom will endure forever, as it says in Psalm 71: 'O God, with Your judgment endow the King… May He endure as long as the sun, and like the moon through all generations. He shall be like rain coming down on the meadow, like showers watering the earth. Justice shall flower in His days, and profound peace, till the moon be no more' (Psalm 71:1,5-7). Those who believe in Me will have Heaven for their inheritance. Those who do not believe will suffer the fate of the devil and the fallen angels. Be not unbelieving then, but believe."
Blessed Apostle Saint John declares at the end of the fourth Gospel: "This is the disciple who bears witness concerning these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his witness is true. There are, however, many other things that Jesus did; but if every one of these should be written, not even the world itself, I think, could hold the books that would have to be written" (John 21:24,25). "But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name" ( Blessed Apostle Saint John 20:31 ).
There is none like Him, Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. There is no other Messiah. No one else has shed His blood for us. No one else takes away the sins of the world. No one else fills us with Sanctifying Grace and the Holy Spirit. No one else intercedes for us at the right hand of the Father. No one else will welcome us into eternal life. They may trust in their Talmuds and their Korans, their Buddhas and their Krishnas. But Jesus Christ is the only Mediator between Heaven and earth, between the Father and humankind.
The devil goes about "like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour." You can discern his presence by the horrors he leaves in his wake - hatred, anger, envy, jealousy, divisions, obsessive behavior, confusion - whereas the presence of the Holy Ghost can be discerned by the presence of love, peace, harmony, unity, and forgiveness.
"Amen, amen, I say to you," says Jesus, "he who enters not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up another way, is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is shepherd of the sheep. To this man the gatekeeper opens, and the sheep hear His voice, and He calls His Own sheep by name and leads them forth… I am the door of the sheep. All whoever have come are thieves and robbers; but the sheep have not heard them. I am the door. If anyone enter by Me he shall be safe, and shall go in and out, and shall find pastures. The thief comes only to steal, and slay, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly" (Blessed Apostle Saint John 10:1-3;7-10 ).
Those who believe in Jesus Christ will say, like those in the Gospel today who witnessed His miracles: "He has done all things well. He has made both the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak" (Blessed Apostle Saint Mark 7:37 ).
