Well, that's certainly true in Kerry's case, whose irregular marriage situation and unabashed promotion of abortion an homosexual marriage have made him at least latae sententiae excommunicated.
Kennedy, on the other hand, was obviously a grave sinner, but I don't know if he qualified as even unofficially excommunicated.

I believe that the Rep. VP candidate who ran with Goldwater in 1964 was RC. Last name was Miller but I can't remember the first name. Getting old.
