New Video: More Liturgical Abuses In The Diocese Of Orange

You can also see the above video here: Included: Teen from the band gives Homily at Catholic Mass

This video of several Masses on different occasions includes Bishop Tod Brown altering the words of the Mass, a lay youth minister giving a reflection as part of the homily, a strange reflection on beauty by a visiting priest, parishioners entering the sanctuary around the altar during the Liturgy of the Eucharist (and remaining in a standing position throughout the consecration), the routine alteration of the words of the Agnus Dei through song, Bishop Brown in the sanctuary with a costumed person in native garb, and Bishop Brown consecrating the elements of the Holy Eucharist in woven baskets and glass pitchers.

Remember that this is the same Bishop Tod Brown who was quite particular about demanding that one parish within his diocese - St. Mary's by the Sea - follow his own new liturgical norm and remain standing during the Agnus Dei, even allowing the parish administrator to send letters inviting Catholics who continued to kneel to leave the parish and the Diocese of Orange, tell those who continued to kneel that doing so was a mortal sin, and dismiss them from all parish volunteer positions and parish organizations with which they were affiliated.

This is also the same diocese that brought you the videos linked below:

The Halloween Mass including the Mass with an extraordinary minister of the Holy Eucharist dressed as a devil, as well as The Barney Blessing.

Brown is so obviously exceeding his authority that no one should hesitate to ignore what he says.

Unbelievable.

Of course, when I've seen things like this...I've actually called out the priest in front of his parishoners. Just ask the priest at...oh, no need to shame him again...

Anyone who thought the Halloween incident was an exception rather than the rule in southern CA is delusional.

Is it any wonder there is plenty of room at Mass these days except, of course, at Latin Masses of the traditional rite?

Here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0yfdbxr7qM , is a video showing Bishop Brown refusing Holy Communion to a kneeling woman. (I apologize if this has already been discussed elsewhere, and I'm sure it has; see also http://www.renewamerica.us/columns/abbott/060420 and http://closedcafeteria.blogspot.com/2006/04/mean-tod-brown.html )

According to the poster:

There were two videographers, since it was a special Mass. The incident was caught on tape by accident. Watching it I can say that the lady walked up, knelt down and was ready to receive Communion. Bishop Brown immediately grabs her hands (not violently, it seems) and says something - I think I can make out 'scene...up'(a Mexican oompahpah oompapah 'Communion song' drowns out everything else). The lady's own account recounts it like this:

I was sitting on the side of the Church, 3rd row, where Bishop Tod Brown distributed the Holy Eucharist (in the video, I am the woman with short brown hair and glasses, wearing a black sweater and long white skirt sitting on the opposite side (from the camera) of the aisle in the center of the church) and upon approaching the Bishop to receive, I genuflected, out of reverence for the Sacred Species and remained on one knee to receive the Blessed Sacrament. Bishop Brown refused to give me Holy Communion. Bishop Brown said, "You need to stand up."

I was in shock and didn't move or respond. He then reached out and took hold of my folded hands, attempting to physically pull me to a standing position, and said more sternly, "You need to stand."

I looked up and whispered, quietly and respectfully, "Please, bishop," and he then grabbed my arm, and pulled me, as though to physically pull me up to a standing position (although obscured, you can see where he bends down and extends his right arm to grab mine) as he stated more loudly, "Get up."

Still on one knee, I then asked very quietly and with genuine ignorance, "Why?"

As he stood up straight he responded, very loudly and sternly, "Because THAT'S the way we receive communion. Now, GET UP, you're causing a scene."

He gives her Communion after she gets up. From viewing the tape, I have to say that if he had given her Communion right away, there wouldn't even have been any delay, she wasn't putting on a show or anything. Even after he grabbed her twice, she bowed her head briefly, got up, received Communion and left right away.

From the Vatican (Congregation for the Divine Liturgy):
Even where the Congregation has approved of legislation denoting standing as the posture for Holy Communion, in accordance with the adaptations permitted to the Conferences of Bishops by the Institution Generalis Missalis Romani n. 160, paragraph 2, it has done so with the stipulation that communicants who choose to kneel are not to be denied Holy Communion on these grounds.

Of course, as one of the responders at You Tube noted: "[A]ccording to Canon law, no Catholic can be denied Holy Communion on the tongue or kneeling. But, it is not like Bishop Brown cares. He has broken almost every other rule." The attempts by some of the viewers of the videos to which you provided links to justify Bishop Brown's actions are revolting.

Yes, we had a lengthy discussion on this several months ago. Sadly, there are still diocese in the US (mine included) that are run by liberal bishops who seek to contemporize the Catholic Church, at the expense of those who seek only to worship our Lord in a reverent manner. For years, I sought the genesis of these appointments until I stumbled upon an aticle about Archbisho Jean Jadot that clarified his recommendations of candidates who shared his liberal views. These included Cardinal Mahony, and so many of the usual suspects. I had planned to point you to that article but just noticed that it has been removed from the Internet. Hmmmm.

Sorry I missed it, NYer. So much for Bishop Brown's claim, at the time he was introduced to his new California flock in 1998, that his views were "middle of the road," eh? Seriously, though, can anything be done about that particular blatant violation of Canon law?
