I don't think these people are associated with the Southern Baptist Convention.

What I mean is among the baptists, which denominations of baptists are the descendants of these you've listed?

Loosely, and from memory - at the time of the London Confessiona, Baptists were doctrinally divided into two categories - particular and general.  The particular, or regular, Baptists were essentially Calvinist (to varying degrees).  The general Baptists were essentially Arminian (to varying degrees).  When America was settled, the particular Baptists formed a National Baptist Convention, generally in agreement with the London Confessions.  About the time of the war between the USA and the CSA, the National Convention split into a Northern Convention and a Southern Convention.  The Southern Convention is the SBC of today.  The Northern Convention has renamed itself the American Baptist Convention.  In the 1930, some fundamentalist churches withdrew from the Northern Convention and formed the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches (GARBC).  In the 1950s, some fundamentalist churches withdrew from the Southern Convention and formed the Baptist Bible Fellowship, International.  There are many smaller groups.  And there are Baptist churches which are actually independent of any larger organization.

In summary, most of today's Baptists in America can be traced back to the London Confessions.  The main exceptions are the Freewill Baptists and the General Baptists, who are Arminian.

Are you saying that only the Independent Local Baptists are the heirs of this early group of baptists that you listed?

I know that Albert Mohler of the SBC seminary in Louisville, KY is also a calvinist in his leanings. But his denomination has an affilation with the convention. I'm not sure if this makes them Independent Local Baptists in Ohhhh's mind or not.

Thank you Celtman.

A group split off from the American Baptists....the Conservative Baptists (?).

I am not sure the American Baptists are calvinistic. I would bet that they are not, but I don't know for sure.

The GARB broke off of the American Baptist first then the Conservative Baptists broke off in the early '50s. I am a Conservative Baptist and graduated from Denver Conservative Baptist Seminary. We are mostly Calvinists with some unthinking Arminians let in so that we have something to pick on at the conventions. Most American Baptists tend to be Arminian.

One of my best friends in the chaplaincy was a Conservative Baptist. I can't say whether he was a calvinist or not. I don't suppose we ever discussed it.

The good old days.
