The Medical Account Of Christ's Last Days and The Cross
Townhall.com ^ | March 26, 2007 | Dr. C. Truman Davis

The physical aspects of the passion, or suffering, of Jesus Christ will be discussed in this series. We shall follow Him from Gethsemane, through His trial, His scourging; His path along the Via Dolorosa and to His last dying hours on the cross.

About a decade ago, reading Jim Bishop's "The Day Christ Died", I realized that I had for years taken the Crucifixion more or less for granted -- that I had grown callous to its horror by a too easy familiarity with the grim details and a too distant friendship with our Lord. It finally occurred to me that, though a physician, I didn't even know the actual immediate cause of death. The Gospel writers don't help us much on this point, because crucifixion and scourging were so common during their lifetime that they apparently considered a detailed description unnecessary. So we have only the concise words of the Evangelists: "Pilate, having scourged Jesus, delivered Him to them to be crucified -- and they crucified Him."

... Dr. C. Truman Davis is a nationally respected Ophthalmologist, vice president of the American Association of Ophthalmology, and an active figure in the Christian schools movement. He is founder and president of the excellent Trinity Christian School in Mesa Arizona, and a trustee of Grove City College.

The Passion of the Christ
The Most Amazing Love Story of all Time
A Review from a Biomedical Engineering Perspective

by Alex F. Metherell, MD, PhD

Mel Gibson’s movie The Passion of the Christ has generated more controversy in the media than any movie in recent memory. One of the main criticisms has been that the violence the movie depicts is excessive. The fact is that neither the flogging nor the crucifixion as shown was as bad or as violent as the actual event – as I will explain later.

I'll say this...I wouldn't physically want to go thru what Christ went thru for us in his passion...

Moreover, I wouldn't spiritually want to go thru what He went thru...sometimes I think that get's lost...He suffered OUR punishment for OUR sin...THAT is not a light load.

Thank you Lord Jesus for your perfect holy sacrifice!

You have understated his sacrifice substantially by referring to it as something he "went" through. He goes through it still. God does not experience time sequentially as we do. He experiences all of time at once. As a result, He is still experiencing it, and He will always do so.

Respectfully, I must state that Hebrews shows that He is not still going thru it. The sacrifice He did was done once and for all. The words "It is finished" sealed the victory over hell and death via His perfect sacrifice. There is no more sacrifice that Christ will give. He has won and is no longer the victim but the victor...God of course is timeless, but Christ did complete His sacrifice 2000 years or so ago. It was completed and is binding for all eternity

Hebrews 10:10:

And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Romans 6:10:

The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

Please know thatI am not posting to be argumentative, rather to give all glory to Christ...

Blessings to you and yours.

Your gracious response has much to commend it, not least that you cited pertinent Scripture.

You misunderstand me if you think I contend Jesus's act did not take place at a particular moment in time twenty centuries ago, "once for all." Rather, my contention is that all moments in time, including that one, are perpetually in God's consciousness. Therefore, it was not an act that recedes increasingly dimly into his memory as do ours.

Instead, it remains completely vivid to Him, not in His memory but in His consciousness.
