ELCA Presiding Bishop's Statement on Virginia Tech Tragedy
With the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) community and the nation, we mourn, we pray, and with the Psalmist we plead: "Out of the depths, I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice!" (Psalm 130:1) As family and friends grieve the deaths and injuries of loved ones, we claim the promise of Christ's Resurrection.
Campus ministries, congregations and leaders of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are offering support and spiritual care to the local community. Through the deep wounds of this tragedy, let us renew our resolve to live together in peace.
"Holy One, you do not distance yourself from the pain of your people, but in Jesus you bear that pain with all who suffer at others' hands. With your cleansing love bring healing and strength to the Virginia Tech community; and by your justice, lift them up, that in body, mind, and spirit, they may again rejoice. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen." (Evangelical Lutheran Worship, p. 84)

Those on the ping list know that I have no great admiration for PBp Hanson’s propensity to issue commentary on national and international news on what often seems a daily basis. But he has become very skilled at public proclamation; this one speaks as an episcopal leader should speak, with the words of faith grounded in the scriptures of the church.
I do wish that rather than promoting the new Evangelical Lutheran Worship book he would have instead quoted this timeless classic prayer by Richard of Chichester, included in LBW (don’t know about the new book):
“Watch, dear Lord,
with those who wake, or watch, or weep,
and give your angels charge over those who sleep.
Keep the sick,
rest the weary,
bless the dying,
soothe the suffering,
pity the afflicted,
shield the joyous,
and all for your love’s sake.”
And the ELCA will sponsor another antigun marc in Washington this summer. I loathe Hanson more than the man who shot up the campus. The shooter killed 32 people, but Hanson is responsible for leading millions away for the true word.
Addressed very well in the 34th chapter of Ezekiel.
Hanson couldn’t even pray to God the Father. That bogus “ELW” is truly the work of Satan.
And why did pseudo-bishop Hanson have to make such an effort to promote “ELW”, when a simple honest prayer for the Virginia Tech community would have been so much more fitting?
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us!
If there are any Missouri or Wisconsin Synod Lutherans around, any chance you could freemail me?
I naively thought that the publishing house served the church...not the other way ‘round.
He was not just pimping “ELW”, but the feminazi ideology behind it.
The Lutheran church in North America has declined precipitously from what it was 25-30 years ago, and feminists are responsible for about 95% of that decline!!!!
As for Augsburg-Fortress, Hanson was displaying the “riches” (GAK!) of “ELW” to the world at large, not mainly to those of us in the ELCA. NO ONE is going to buy “ELW” who doesn’t have to, so Hanson’s pimping won’t help A-F one bit!
May our Risen Lord roll away the disgrace of feminist/”gay”-enabling/heretical liberal rule from us very soon, and bring us all home to our true mother church!!!!
