Exorcism of "holy water"

"[Prior to Vatican II, w]hen holy water [was] blessed, the priest reads several prayers, which included an exorcism of the salt and the water. An exorcism is the banishing of evil spirits......therefore, when any material object is to be devoted to the service of God, the Church often prescribes for it a form of exorcism, to free it from the power of the Evil One.......

Exorcism of Salt

O salt, creature of God, I exorcise you by the living God, by the true God, by the holy God, by the God who ordered you to be poured into the water by Eliseus the Prophet so that its life-giving powers might be restored. I exorcise you so that you may become a means of salvation for believers, that you may bring health of soul and body to all who make use of you, arid that you may put to flight and drive away from the places where you are sprinkled every apparition, villainy, and turn of devilish deceit, and every unclean spirit, adjured by Him Who will come to judge the living and the dead and the world by fire. Amen.

Exorcism of Water O water, creature of God, I exorcise you in the name of God the Father almighty, and in the name of Jesus Christ His Son, our Lord, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. I exorcise you so that you may put to flight all the power of the Enemy, and be able to root out and supplant that Enemy with his apostate angels: through the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who will come to judge the living and the dead and the world by lire. Amen.

I recently read this on a forum

Holy Water is blessed before the High Mass or Parish Mass on Sundays, by means of the following ancient exorcisms and prayers. When salt and the water to be blessed have been made ready in the sacristry, the Priest who is going to say Mass, or another appointed for the purpose (Holy Water may be blessed at other times also), wearing an alb, or surplice and stole, says:

V. Our help is in the name of the Lord. R. Who made heaven and earth.

He then begins the exorcism of the salt.

I exorcize thee, created element of salt, by the living + God, by the true + God, by the holy + God, by GOd Who by the hand of Eliseus the prophet mingled thee with water in order that the barrenness thereof might be healed; that thou mayest be made salt from whichthe evil spirit hath been cast forth for the health of the faithful, and mayest bring to all who partake of thee health of soul and body: and that there may be banished from the place in which thou shalt be sprinkled, every kind of hallucination and wickedness, or craft of devilish deceit, and every unclean spirit, in the name of Him Who will come to judge the living and the dead and the world by fire. R. Amen.

Let us pray.-- We humbly entreat, O God, Thy boundless mercy and love for us, to bless + and hallow + this created element of salt, which Thou hast given to mankind for their use, that it may make for health of mind and body to all who partake of it, and that everything touched or sprinkled with it may be freed from all uncleanness, and from all assaults of wicked spirits. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

Exorcism of the water. I exorcize thee, created element of water, in the name of God + the Father almighty, and in the name of Jesus + Christ His Son our Lord, and in the power of the Holy + Ghost; that thou mayest be made water from which the evil spirit hath been driven out for the banishment of every power of the enemy, that thou mayest be able to uproot and cast out entirely that enemy himself, together with his rebel angels, by the power of the same Lord Jesus Christ, Who will come to judge the living and the dead and the world by fire. R. Amen.

Let us pray.--O God, Who for the salvation of the human race didst ordain Thy greatest Sacraments in the substance of water: graciously hearken to our prayers, and impoart to this element which hath in manifold ways been purified, Thy power and blessing +: so that this creature of Thine may be used in Thy mysteries and endowed with divine grace to drive away devils and to cast out diseases; that whatever in the houses or possessions of the faithful shall be sprinkled by this water, may be freed from everything unclean and hurtful. Let no spirit of pestilence or baleful breath abide therein. Let all the snares of the denemy who lieth in wait for us be driven forth, and let everything that threateneth the safety or peace of the dwellers therein be banished by the sprinkling of this water: so that the health which they seek by calling upon Thy holy name may be guarded from all assault. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

Is water and salt still in need of exorcism ?

If not why not?

Hmmmm....interesting. Isn’t there a division of exorcism within the Vatican? What does the Church exorcise these days?

THERE IS NO REASON FOR EARTHLY INTERVENTION:

I will do my best in answering this the best i can,and gently.

Jer 31:31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah-
Mt 26:28 “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Mr 14:24 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many.
Lu 22:20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.
1Co 11:25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
2Co 3:6 ¶ who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
Heb 8:8 Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—
Heb 8:13 In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
Heb 9:15 ¶ And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
Heb 12:24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
(NKJV)

We are a covenant people, however under the covenant of Grace or new covenant the levitical need for priestly intervention [man] between the bride[the church]and groom [Christ]is moot.

Heb 2:14 ¶ Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
Heb 9:7 But into the second part the high priest went alone once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the people’s sins committed in ignorance;
Heb 9:12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
Heb 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh,
Heb 9:14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Heb 9:18 Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood.
Heb 9:19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,
Heb 9:20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.”
Heb 9:21 Then likewise he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry.
Heb 9:22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.
Heb 9:25 not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another—
Heb 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.
Heb 10:19 ¶ Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,
Heb 10:29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
Heb 11:28 By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
Heb 12:24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
Heb 13:11 For the bodies of those animals, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned outside the camp.
Heb 13:12 Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate.
Heb 13:20 Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,
(NKJV)

A BELIEVER IS JUSTIFIED BY COVENANT BLOOD!

THERE IS NO NEED FOR LEVITICAL INTERCESSION.

THERE IS NO NEED FOR LEVITICAL INTERCESSION.

Well, that's a good thing, since there haven't been any Levitical priests to do the job for going-on 1,930 years now.

Why you think that has anything to do with Catholicism, I've no idea.

In fact, those prayers are still said at parishes that use the pre-Vatican II liturgy.

Correct. If they paid more attention the letter to Hebrews, they would find out the priesthood of the New Covenant is of Melchisedech. Chapter 5 is a key one.

Fascinating thread. Thanks for posting it. Amazing how far men can stray from the solid truth of Scripture.

"And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards." -- Isaiah 19:3

This is contradicted by several GOSPEL QUOTES (Jesus himself) -- about there is no reason for earthly intervention.

One is John 20:23, the other is the very end of the Our Father prayer -- some versions have "do not put us to the test", other versions have "deliver us from evil".

In the case of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, he warned against believers coming forward and saying outright that they were Christians to Roman authorities. One person did this, and he ended up renouncing his Christian faith (when he was "put to the test").

A member of my family lived in Africa in the 1970s/1980s. The person told of an incident where a local person came to a blackrobe (Jesuit Missionary) for Holy Water.

The local person said it was to put out a fire. The Jesuit did not understand why regular water would not do, and went to investigate.

It was a demonic fire burning without consuming anything. The Holy Water was needed to put out this demonic flame, according to the story...

In another story, a Mass was said in a part of China (probably in the 1920s or 1930s) where Mass had never been said before. During the first Mass, objects were flying all over the place -- apparently there were unseen demons that were furious that the holy Mass was being said there.

It did not happen in subsequent Masses.

Saint Padre Pio used Holy Water to make things readable that were fouled so that they could not be read -- often it was said that this was the work of the devil.

In short, quote Jesus, and I will have respect for your belief...

Another quote is when one of the sons of Thunder (John) came running to Jesus complaining of someone casting out demons by using Jesus' name.

Basically, Jesus told John to cool it. (See Mark 9:38-41).

Exorcism and warding off demons is a smaller gift to priests and others. Sacramentals such as Holy Water and Holy Salt are means of warding off evil.

We should always try to oppose evil. And Mark 9:40 is the crux of the matter -- those who are not against us are with us -- especially if it done in the name of Jesus.

There are many forms of Earthly spiritual weapons that one can use -- the medal of Saint Benedict is one that has been in use for over 1000 years, as an example. It has a special blessing to ward off evil. One phrase inscribed on the medal is the abbreviation for the Latin of "Drink your own poison" -- basically telling Satan (the devil) to drink his own poison...

I disagree with Catholic Churches removing Holy Water for Lent -- that is stupid and foolish to "lose a spiritual weapon" because of some lame-brained layman's (or clergy's) bad idea...

A good read on this subject (and a true story) is:

Possessed: The True Story of an Exorcism

by Allen, Thomas B

ISBN 055356577X -- Publisher Bantam Books

The story of this exorcism is the basis for the novel. The true story started happening in August 1949 in Maryland (in the suburbs of DC). It was a boy who was possessed. When the story broke the press (about the exorcism), a student at Georgetown read it, and then later wrote the novel The Exorcist. He changed it from a boy to a girl, and from the Maryland suburbs of DC, he changed the location to DC...

The true story is a much better read and story...

Story summary of the book Possessed: The True Story of an Exorcism:

In August 1949, a Mt. Rainier boy was reportedly "held in the devil's grip"--possessed--until a multi-faith exorcism set him free. An article in "The Washington Post" about this exorcism inspired William Peter Blatty to write "The Exorcist." More than forty years after the original event, the diary of a priest who participated in the exorcism surfaced in a St. Louis mental hospital. To write "Possessed," Tom Allen has used this diary and done additional research on witnesses to the original exorcism, including a Lutheran minister and a team of Jesuits.

And Melchisedech, according to the word, is without beginning or end; who do you suppose fits that description?
