A Brief Catechism for Adults - Lesson 35: The Second Commandment

Lesson 35: The Second Commandment

"Kings of the earth and all people:  princes and all judges of the earth:  Young men and maidens:  let the old with the younger, praise the name of the Lord:  for His name alone is exalted."  (Psalm 148:11-13)

"But [Our Lord] emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man.  He humbled Himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross.  For which cause God also hath exalted Him, and hath given Him a name which is above all names:  That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in Heaven, on earth, and under the earth:  And that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father."  (Philippians 2:7-11)

  1. What is the Second Commandment?
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
"For the Lord will not hold him guiltless that shall take the name of the Lord His God in vain."    (Exodus 20:7)

Catholicism also defines “improper use” of Mary’s name and the saint’s names as violations of this commandment, correct? If so, why was this omitted?

Never heard that. Nor is it in the Catholic Encyclopedia under the entries for the Ten Commandments, nor for the entry on "Blasphemy". The 2nd Commandment in both places is clearly reserved to God alone.

However, Can. 1369 provides: "A person who in a public show or speech, in published writing, or in other uses of the instruments of social communication utters blasphemy, gravely injures good morals, expresses insults, or excites hatred or contempt against religion or the Church is to be punished with a just penalty." Of course that's only for Catholics, who should know better.

I wholeheartedly agree. However, the CCC teaches otherwise:

2146 The second commandment forbids the abuse of God's name, i.e., every improper use of the names of God, Jesus Christ, but also of the Virgin Mary and all the saints.

The Hebrew is "Do not carry the Lord's name in vain", which would most importantly mean, don't fake at living a Godly life on the one hand, yet lead actually an un-Godly life on the other.

And 2148 as well: "The prohibition of blasphemy extends to language against Christ's Church, the saints, and sacred things. It is also blasphemous to make use of God's name to cover up criminal practices, to reduce peoples to servitude, to torture persons or put them to death. The misuse of God's name to commit a crime can provoke others to repudiate religion."

So it's an expansion or extension of the 2nd commandment, which is common in the Catechism. In other words, using vile language against the saints, the Church, or sacred things tends to call God's name into disrepute and provoke hatred for God.

It doesn't mean that the saints, the Church or sacred things are on a level with God.

2148
Blasphemy is directly opposed to the second commandment. It consists in uttering against God - inwardly or outwardly - words of hatred, reproach, or defiance; in speaking ill of God; in failing in respect toward him in one's speech; in misusing God's name. St. James condemns those "who blaspheme that honorable name [of Jesus] by which you are called." The prohibition of blasphemy extends to language against Christ's Church, the saints, and sacred things. It is also blasphemous to make use of God's name to cover up criminal practices, to reduce peoples to servitude, to torture persons or put them to death. The misuse of God's name to commit a crime can provoke others to repudiate religion.

Thank you for posting the entire series.

I also am thinking about posting a series. Might be quite thought-provoking.
