Joni Mitchell Attacks Catholic Church
Fox News ^ | September 24, 2007 | Roger Friedman

Joni Mitchell is back after nine years, and she’s on the attack. In the title track to her new album, “Shine,” Mitchell takes a nice swipe at the Catholic Church by name.

“Shine on the Catholic Church/And the prisons that it owns,” she sings. “Shine on all the Churches/that love less and less.”

Mitchell was never one to mince words, but in her triumphant return on Starbucks’ Hear Records, she doesn’t give an inch.

In “Shine,” she continues: “Shine on lousy leadership/Licensed to kill/Shine on dying soldiers/In patriotic pain/Shine on mass destruction/In some God's name!”

Mitchell’s album will be something of a revelation to young people who might buy it at Starbucks when it’s released Tuesday if they listen to it and read the lyrics.

Mitchell, the original singer-songwriter, presents herself in stark contrast to the dodo-brained warblers of this generation. She’s cynical and doesn’t mind expressing it.

In my favorite song, “Bad Dreams,” she begins by painting a happy picture: “The cats are in the flower bed/A red hawk rides the sky/I guess I should be happy/Just to be alive...”

But then the other foot falls, and it’s a doozy. When I first heard the next line, I actually laughed out loud. All I could think was, You tell ‘em, Joni:

“But we have poisoned everything/And oblivious to it all/The cell phone zombies babble/Through the shopping malls…”

And that’s just for starters. She observes: “You cannot be trusted/Do you even know you're lying/It's dangerous to kid yourself/You go deaf and dumb and blind.”

Mitchell plays nearly all the instruments on the album herself, and does all the singing. And while the lyrics are harsh indictments of modern culture, Mitchell serves them up with grace and style.

It’s easy to be against stuff. So what is she for? Has she got any answers to tough questions? Charm the terrorists with flowers? Against big companies. They provide jobs and she doesn’t have an answer to that other than write songs against everything.

Garbage served with “grace and style” is still garbage.

Sadly it’s the only way she can express herself and produce music.

Oh really? Fits right in if you ask me along with oldtimers like Streisand.

“Shine on the Catholic Church

Shine on all the Churches

WHAT? The Catholic Church owns hospitals, orphanages, AIDS clinics, shelters for battered women, universities, schools, daycare centers, pregnancy crisis centers... but PRISONS?

And it isn’t just Catholicism she hates:

Shine on good humor
Shine on good will
Shine on lousy leadership
Licensed to kill
Shine on dying soldiers
In patriotic pain
Shine on mass destruction
In some God’s name!

It never occurs to a moonbat like Joni that if no one ever "paved Paradise and put up a parking lot" there would be no record companies to give her the contracts that have made her a very wealthy woman.

Right up there in the ranks with Sinead O'Connor and Charlotte Church.

“She’s cynical and doesn’t mind expressing it.”

‘Cause you know, cynicism is unknown to modern popular “musicians”, like 50 Cent, 9 Inch Nails, the Sex Pistols, Green Day...

I guess this is the “fair and balanced” part of Fox, cheering on a woman insulting the purposes served by our soldiers, snidely attacking belief in God, and proclaiming her superiority over the mindless masses using telephones in shopping malls. Being a guy that doesn’t much use his cell, I’d lay odds that Joni Mitchell has spent more time talking on cell phones in malls than I have. Her skin, stretched too thin from facelifts, isn’t what I consider the mark of a philosopher or spiritual thinker . . .

I believe Mitchell never married. From Wiki:

As Mitchell prepared to leave her home in Saskatoon to relocate to Toronto, she became pregnant. Seeing no other alternatives, she gave her daughter, Kelly Dale Anderson (born February 19, 1965), up for adoption. The experience remained private for most of her career, but she made allusions to it in several songs, most notably the song "Little Green" (from Blue), and, years later, the song "Chinese Cafe" from "Wild Things Run Fast" ("Your kids are coming up straight/My child's a stranger/I bore her/But I could not raise her"). Her daughter, renamed Kilauren Gibb, began a search for her as an adult, and the two were reunited in 1997. [3]

I think that filth from Sinead O’Connor helped kill her career.

Thanks for the poo, Joni.
