The Archdiocese of San Francisco is finally speaking out about the debacle at Most Holy Redeemer where Archbishop George Niederauer gave Communion to two Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The problem is, the Archbishop and priest of the diocese aren’t focusing their heat on MHR, they’re taking shots the people who caught the incident on video and who are writing about it on the internet.
For some reason they can’t manage a little humility for their mistake. They’ve now resorted to attacking the faithful that are offended that the source and summit of their faith has been defiled. These are the same people who have been begging for relief from the antics that are a common occurrence at MHR. This is not some new problem that suddenly appeared on October 6, 2007. This is the culmination of years of dissent in the parish of Most Holy Redeerer.
Archbishop Niederauer has missed the golden opportunity to educate the laity of his diocese regarding the teachings of the Church on homosexuality. The people videotaping were probably hoping that he would do just that when he went to MHR. The Archbishop giving Communion to some of the most depraved dissenters in the diocese was probably beyond their worst nightmare. This event gave the Archbishop a chance to show Most Holy Redeemer parish the error of their ways. Instead he chose to go after people wrote about it on the internet. "The blogosphere is a kind of dangerous, endless recess in a global schoolyard," he said, "where the bullies with the biggest bullhorns can shout whatever they want."
We have yet to hear the Archbishop explain to the laity of MHR that Catholics in good faith cannot "tolerate" sin but we have heard that anyone that exposes sin in the diocese is a great, big meanie.
Most Holy Redeemer is out of control. Most of the faithful are going to figure this out when they hear the concelebrant, Jesuit Father Donal Godfrey, contradict himself at the travesty defending the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgenc by saying of the "sisters" that they were "disrespectful to religious sisters" but then went onto say that "it probably wasn't their intention (to offend.) They knelt in all the right places. They stood in all the right places. Except for the way they were dressed, they weren't doing anything disrespectful." Their organizations very existence is disrespectful. Local Catholics have the right and duty to make it known that the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence exist to mock the Church and to promote immorality everywhere.. MHR is banking on people outside the San Francisco Bay Area not knowing the real story behind them by spinning them as funny dressed philanthropists. This is a far cry from the truth.
Fr. Godfrey then went after the videographers by saying "I thought it was disrespectful for somebody to go to another church with the intention of filming it," he added, "without asking the pastor permission to do that and, second, with the intention of using that in a hostile way, without having a conversation first with the pastor. On the face of it, they were out to get the archbishop."
Translation: They caught us and we’re mad. There is nothing at all disrespectful about doing one’s best to thwart people desecrating Our Lord. It’s highly unlikely that the videographers thought that Archbishop Niederauer would actually give Communion to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. In all fairness to the Archbishop, it’s probably that the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were the ones trying to "get him". Why would any pastor object to a Mass being taped unless he had something to hide? If the parishioners truly were more upset about the videographers than the SPI, that would be very telling of the situation in that diocese. The San Francisco Archdiocese is going to have to contend with the fact that, in the age of the internet, there will be no way to hide their transgressions.
The liberals have been caught and shown on videos several times recently doing outrageous things (the “Sisters,” the Halloween ghoul mass, etc.), and they’re angry. Angry at being caught, that is. Look for them to ban videotaping and in fact all cameras and camera phones from their churches. They know how to respond to these things.
I would not be surprised to see this as the reaction in some dioceses. That said, there are at least two ways to respond that will end in favor of anyone who loves orthodoxy:
- Complain to the Holy See stating that the exact reason for it is to exercise our role as laity in protecting the Faith and our right to have valid, licit liturgy. Let the liberals explain why we can't exercise our role as laity as encouraged per Vatican II
- Draw the ban to its logical conclusion: No videos or photos of baptism, first communion, confirmation, or weddings that occur during Mass. At all, no exceptions. Hell hath no fury like an angry bride or an angry mother. If this were done, the policy would last a month, at most.

Exactly the opposite of the truth. He just described the main stream media.

The more help that we have in combatting these anti Christian practices within our Church, the faster and more complete we’ll drive them out. I know that you’ve been attacked as being anti Catholic (let’s see, I might have mentioned a thing or two in the past), but we need the truth out in public.

Reunion with Orthodoxy just gets further and further away, luckily for us Orthodox. You know Alex, we Greeks had an Archbishop here who tried to shut up the laity when they started complaining publicly about his behavior. He and his fellow travelers, sycophants and lickspittles ended up “out of work”. The EP removed him before he lost his own throne. The Latins ought to try that some day.
Does the pastor given written permission? I don't think so.
