Italy's Padre Pio 'faked his stigmata with acid'
Telegraph ^ | October 24, 2007 | Malcolm Moore

The Other Christ: Padre Pio and 19th Century Italy, by the historian Sergio Luzzatto, draws on a document found in the Vatican's archive.

Padre Pio
Padre Pio exhibited stigmata throughout his life, starting in 1911

The document reveals the testimony of a pharmacist who said that the young Padre Pio bought four grams of carbolic acid in 1919.

"I was an admirer of Padre Pio and I met him for the first time on 31 July 1919," wrote Maria De Vito.

She claimed to have spent a month with the priest in the southern town of San Giovanni Rotondo, seeing him often.

"Padre Pio called me to him in complete secrecy and telling me not to tell his fellow brothers, he gave me personally an empty bottle, and asked if I would act as a chauffeur to transport it back from Foggia to San Giovanni Rotondo with four grams of pure carbolic acid.

"He explained that the acid was for disinfecting syringes for injections. He also asked for other things, such as Valda pastilles."

The testimony was originally presented to the Vatican by the Archbishop of Manfredonia, Pasquale Gagliardi, as proof that Padre Pio caused his own stigmata with acid.

It was examined by the Holy See during the beatification process of Padre Pio and apparently dismissed.

Padre Pio, whose real name was Francesco Forgione, died in 1968. He was made a saint in 2002. A recent survey in Italy showed that more people prayed to him than to Jesus or the Virgin Mary. He exhibited stigmata throughout his life, starting in 1911.

The new allegations were greeted with an instant dismissal from his supporters. The Catholic Anti-Defamation League said Mr Luzzatto was a liar and was "spreading anti-Catholic libels".

Pietro Siffi, the president of the League, said: "We would like to remind Mr Luzzatto that according to Catholic doctrine, canonisation carries with it papal infallibility.

"We would like to suggest to Mr Luzzatto that he dedicates his energies to studying religion properly."

Not a 'sonny', and as a Christian, quite saddened by your attitude. :*( I won't respond to you personally anymore since you are so angry with EVERYONE who is NOT a Catholic. As far as the thread being off-topic, thread drift is not an uncommon thing among the thousands of posts on FR. I was still talking about Catholicism and wondering why saints were so important in the religion, since this Padre Pia is being discussed. Not sure what 'trolling behind a Catholic' means?

But I do know that I did not force a single person on this particular thread to respond to any of my questions--people were merely kind enough to take the time to offer their insight/wisdom/knowledge which I was seeking. You on the other hand have had a huge chip on your shoulder since you came into the thread (and I know there were some other people talking down about your religion) and I'm sorry for that. I think a lot of that is grief related concerning your recent loss, and I will keep you in my prayers that you will find healing for your broken heart soon.

Padre Pio would not be a saint if the Church had not ruled on it.

There are three steps to sainthood

1 Venerable
2. Blessed (one miracle proven)
3. Saint (at least two miracles proven)

Read Ruffin’s book that An American Mother previously posted about. It is chock full of Padre Pio miracles.

You just can’t accept the fact that you came extremely early on this thread and derailed it, and that someone could be angry with you over it.

So, you post that my anger is related to my grief? And that I’m angry with people who are not Catholic? Quite a leap—did you ever consider that I’m angry because of your (and your fellow protestants’) consistently rude behavior on these threads?

I think you’d like praying the Rosary. You should try it. The “Our Father” is a big part of the Rosary devotion.:) Many Saints have prayed the Rosary. Perhaps it will help you.

In addition to my earlier post:

James 5:16; Proverbs 15:8, 29 - the prayers of the righteous (the saints) have powerful effects. This is why we ask for their prayers. How much more powerful are the saints’ prayers in heaven, in whom righteousness has been perfected.

1 Tim 2:5-6 - therefore, it is because Jesus Christ is the one mediator before God that we can be subordinate mediators. Jesus is the reason. The Catholic position thus gives Jesus the most glory. He does it all but loves us so much He desires our participation.

If this thread had been designated a Catholic caucus, it would be protected from non-Catholic challenges.

Since it was not, it is an open thread and challenges are to be expected.

Didn’t Laura Ingraham also convert to Catholicism?

Actually, don't we have to say that Adam and Eve were born without sin? So would that make at least three exceptions to Paul's blanket statement?

And, in case you came in late, our teaching is that Mary was sinless not, so to speak, intrinsically, but by an anticipatory or "proleptic" gift of Christ. (Thank you, Duns Scotus.)That is she WOULD have been born into sin but - because God has a different approach to time from ours - Christ's saving work was applied to her, so to speak, "in advance".

As to WHY we think that, I can say this, which is not meant to be dispositive. Back when I was a Protestant clergydude, it hit me one day that Mary had said a "Yes" to God's request to use her entire being. And subsequent to that yes, She brought perfect Love into the world.

And, enthusiastic sinner that I am, even I want to bring Love into the world. And so I'd like to say Mary's "yes". But I can't. The minute I give myself to God, I snatch myself back. If Gabriel had come to me, I would have said, "Well, sort of, I guess, maybe okay, but can I have my lawyer look at the fine print first?" and then I would have tried to weasel out of it.

So, in my graced moments I want to share in Christ's work. And in my graced moments I want to give a whole-hearted, unreserved, "yes" to God. But I see I cannot do that without extraordinary Grace.

So I conclude that Mary had extraordinary Grace. And, as the moon is wonderfully beautiful, shining not with its own light, but with the light of the Sun, but still helping me make my way through the night, so Mary shines with reflected light and guides me as I walk the way of sinful penitent pilgrims.I see by the sun, but I am very grateful for the moon.

Of course He knew. He could have easily instructed people to pray that way knowing this.

I do not pretend to understand WHY God does what he does and doesn't do what he doesn't do. He COULD have told us to do something to prevent the rise of Islam, but he didn't. He COULD have told us about the Internet, but he did not. The absence of evidence that he wished us to ask the saved for intercession is not evidence of the absence of his desire that we do so. Christ did not die at the crucifixion, he is very much alive, and perfectly capable of expressing his intentions to us on earth.
