According to "View" co-host Joy Behar, those sainted by the Catholic Church are no more than mentally ill individuals who heard voices. On the January 9 edition of "The View" Behar, who considers prayer a "distraction," suggested that there are no longer any saints due to modern medicine.
"I have a theory that you cant find any saints any more because of psycho-tropic medication. I think that the old days the saints were hearing voices and they didnt have any furosine to calm them down. [laughter] Now that we have all of this medication available to us, you cant find a saint any more."
Elisabeth Hasselbeck noted the late Mother Teresa, who does not yet been given sainthood, as a modern example. Behar responded by citing Mother Theresas doubts and that the Churchs standard has changed due to medical advances.
"Thats why Mother Teresa had issues. Lets not forget, she didnt really believe 100 percent like those saints who were hearing voices. She didnt hear voices. So the Church said okay, she does good deeds. Lets make her a saint. In the old days it used to be you heard voices. You cant do that anymore."
Hasselbeck disagreed responding that voices had nothing to do with it, but rather a very strong faith asserting "I dont think they were hearing voices. I think they were committed to their faith and theyd go to death for it."
The transcript is below.
JOY BEHAR: Im going to get in trouble for this, but you know what? I have a theory that you cant find any saints any more because of psycho-tropic medication. I think that the old days the saints were hearing voices and they didnt have any furosine to calm them down. [laughter] Now that we have all of this medication available to us, you cant find a saint any more.
ELISABETH HASSELBECK: I dont think so, Mother Teresa.
BEHAR: Thats why Mother Teresa had issues. Lets not forget, she didnt really believe 100 percent like these saints who were hearing voices. She didnt hear voices. So the Church said "okay, she does good deeds. Lets make her a saint." In the old days it used to be you heard voices. They cant do that anymore.
WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Theyd cut your hair off. Theyd set you on fire. Dont forget what they did to Joan of Arc.
BEHAR: Because she was hearing voices.
GOLDBERG: They set her on fire. Thats why people stopped saying anything.
BEHAR: Well it was- no, no, no, in the last century before you had medication, they still were hearing voices. Im telling you.
HASSELBECK: I dont think they were hearing voices. I think they were committed to their faith and theyd go to death for it.
SHERRI SHEPHERD: Because I hear voices. I hear voices in my head.
BEHAR: Well, duh!
[laughter]
HASSELBECK: I hear voices too.
BEHAR: Medication is in order perhaps!

Catholic ping!
There’s a voice in my head saying that Joy Behar is an ignorant woman that doesn’t know what she is saying.
John 1:5
The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
Joy should look up the word “transference” in the dictionary.
Got that right. Behar is a very lapsed Catholic. I’m wondering what excuse do Joy and Whoopi use for their obvious mental illnesses?
Joy is too cowardly to say the same things of Mohammed.
(2) Just because Joy Behar may need psychotropic medication does not mean that the saintly faithful do.
(3) Many people today would consider Saint Maximilian Kolbe or Saint Edith Stein crazy for the choices they made, but their writings show they were far more lucid in their reasoning than "Ms." Behar.
I suggest Joy Behar is irredeemably stupid.
Saints are not always perfect. But they are holy because they strive to live a life closoe to Christ’s.
I’d really like to see someone bring up Edith Stein to her. Catholic by choice, Jewish by birth. Oh yeah, she needed to be medicated, Joy you idiot.
I have seen this show ONE time on a YouTube clip. I wouldn’t waste my time on it.
On Thursday’s The View, Joy Behar seriously suggested Senator Tim Johnson was the victim of a deliberate act to cause his brain disorder that led to emergency surgery and has left him in critical condition: “Is there such a thing as a man-made stroke? In other words, did someone do this to him?” An astounded Elisabeth Hasselbeck wondered: “Why is everything coming from the liberal perspective a conspiracy?” Behar contended, on the ABC daytime show, that the Republican Party is capable of such a nefarious deed: “I know what this, that party is capable of.”

Two things:
1. Most people named Behar are Jewish. (So she probably abandoned that before she abanded Catholicism)
2. She is NOT a Catholic. Her parents may have raised her to be a Catholic but she is definitely NOT one.
Behar is your prototypical atheist because she believes that no intelligence person would believe in any religion. She believes that fame and attention are better than any afterlife and there is no future for her. The good news is that her views die off each generation and are not carried on.
Joy Behar was born Josephina Occhiuto. Her relatives still attend my grandmother's parish.
She married and divorced a guy named Joey Behar.
Joy Behar is IMHO a total idiot. I wish she would just shut up & go far away. She ought to move in with her pal Rosie.
Another human that denies God. Goodbye Joy.
bumpus ad summum
I often wonder how these people maintain basic bodily functions with so few synapses firing.
Luke 10:21
In that same hour, he rejoiced in the Holy Ghost, and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hidden these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to little ones. Yea, Father, for so it hath seemed good in thy sight.
1 Corinthians 1:27
But the foolish things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the wise; and the weak things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the strong.
Either that word or the word “projection.”
By implication, therefore, those of us who aspire to imitate the saints must also be cuckoo, I guess.
Ergo, fervent Catholics are nuts.
What else is new?
Were I God I’d sick the monkeys on her!
Then again...
There are others who have heard, understand, and have made a conscious choice...
They are the people who WON'T believe! *****
My sheep listen to my voice, I know them, and they follow me. -- Jesus Christ
(JOHN 10:27 NIV)
I've never seen the show, but is morning network TV really that bad that this show has ratings? From reading the transcript, it sounds like 5th grade girls having an argument about a subject they are totally ignorant of. Which is not unusual for 5th grade girls, or for that matter, boys.
Needless to say, the operative consideration for people being canonized a saint in the Church is that they lead a life of heroic virtue. Oftentimes, it is precisely through any weaknesses, illnesses, problems, etc. that they (and us) are/were tested in the life of virtue whereby they/us have to depend on the Grace of God.
All this whether or not they/us hear voices to boot. The voices in my head are telling them to grow up!
Abba Antony [the Great] said: A time is coming when people will go mad, and when they see someone who is not mad, they will attack him saying, You are mad, you are not like us.
Sad. Why does she fell compelled to spit in the faces of her relatives?
St. Antony the Prophet!
Many families have relatives like that.
Ugly woman, plain in appearance but her soul shows through, spoiling her looks completely.
The view is on when I am doing KV care in the morning because we/he likes AM Northwest and Martha Stewart so the View is in between the two.
Joy Behar is a very unfunny big mouthed lib poop spewing person I have ever seen.
Everyday I cringe when she talks over the other co-hosts with her vile anti Christian/anti conservative/anit Bush attacks.
I wish they would replace her and then the show would be tolerable.
I am running around and in high work mode or else I would change the channel. It goes by so quick that hour that Martha is on and I do not have time to click back and forth in my busy mode KV care.
She has nothing AT ALL to say that we want to listen to.
She is as bad as Rosie O.
She must have inherited Rosie’s demons on the set.
We all know that Saint Vito had epilepsy, but he made it so cool that they referred to it as his "dance." ;-)
It is also very naive of Whoopi to claim Joan of Arc was killed for hearing the voice of God. She was killed for leading a revolt agaisnt England and heresy was used as a excuse to kill her.
Whoopi is another one who’s dumb as dirt.
Really? I see saints almost every day - we must run with a different crowd.
Joy is an Italian who married a Jew and her name is Josephina. Her ex husband’s name she kept and changed her fist name to Joy.
The world population of the spiritually challenged grows exponentially. As long as the church doesn’t speak about the spiritual world, hell and damnation, the existence of same will be eliminated from public discourse.
Actually, so should you. ;)
The correct term is "projection".
That's just about nails it. The sad thing is that these are grown women; it's even sadder that they got a TV show and that people actually pay attention to them.
Well, it IS a distraction, Joy. It distracts us from things like pride and envy; from seeking ruthlessly those things which the world values, such as fame, fortune, and power.
Mother Theresa? Joan of Arc? Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke and John?
Joy Behar is the psychotic one.
There’s a psychology term for Joy Behar: narcissistic personality disorder.
Ah, how sweet it is to rest in Christ Jesus and His Truth, rather than in the pained and vain imaginations of man. Joy has a weird view, no doubt. As for me, I choose to refer to the Bible to see who are saints - and discover that all who have been chosen by and believe in the Lord Jesus are saints.
We see evidence of this in Romans 15:22 - 29, Romans 16:1 - 4 & 15, 1 Corinthians 1:1 - 3, 1 Corinthians 6:1 - 2, 1 Corinthians 14:26 - 33, Ephesians 4:11 - 16.
From Holman’s Bible Dictionary:
New Testament One word, hagios, is used for saints in the New Testament. This word, like qadosh, means holy. Consequently, saints are the holy ones. There is only one reference to saints in the Gospels (Matt. 27:52). In this verse, dead saints are resurrected at the Lord’s crucifixion. The death of the Holy One provides life for those who believe in God. In Acts, three of the four references occur in chapter 9 (vv. 13,32,41). First Ananias and then Peter talks of the saints as simply believers in Christ. Paul continues this use in his Epistles to the Romans, Corinthians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Thessalonians, and Philemon. In each case, saints seem simply to be people who name Jesus as Lord. In the Book of Revelation, however, where the word saints, occurs more times than in any other single book (13 times), the meaning is further defined. Saints not only name Jesus as Lord, but they are faithful and true witnesses for Jesus.
Little wonder then that the early church considered witnesses who were martyred for their testimonies to be saints. In fact, soon these saints were accorded special honor and then even worship. Unfortunately, the term saints came to be applied only to such special people.
Biblically, though, the term saint is correctly applied to anyone who believes Jesus Christ is Lord. To believe in Jesus demands obedience and conformity to His will. A saint bears true and faithful witness to Christ in speech and life-style. To be a saint is a present reality when a believer seeks to let the Spirit form Christ within (Rom. 8:29; Gal. 4:19; Eph. 4:13).
It’s obvious that Joy Behar is, at the very least, a lapsed Catholic.
She can be funny but I wish she would stop the Catholic bashing. Yes she grew up catholic and decided not to practice anymore and that is her choice, but she should at least be respectful to those who still believe.
This woman is just trying to get everyone to talk about her childish rants. She saw how well it worked for Rosie, so she is going for it, too, and, obviously, her plan is working. I say we should just ignore her.
I have no idea why all the sudden Joy Behar rates herself as an expert on the NFL; but on this issue I'll have to agree. Some of Sean Payton's play calling this year was atrocious. I mean, he had the Bucs right where he needed 'em about 6 weeks ago in their home game and calls a double-reverse while trying to kill the clock in which Reggie Bush ends up causing a fumble and the Bucs drive on down (with a back QB, mind you) and go for the win instead of a tying FG and succeed.
Insane to be sure, but I didn't complain one bit!
