For Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, the first female head of the 2.4 million-member U.S. Episcopal Church, military conflict in the Middle East hits very close to home. Jefferts Schori has a 26-year-old daughter, Kate, a pilot who was recently deployed to the United Arab Emirates as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.
"We raised our daughter to make her own decisions and she's clearly done that," Jefferts Schori said Friday in Birmingham. "We're very supportive of the work she's doing, believing that it's far better to have leaders who come with a solid, moral, ethical base and lead others in fruitful directions."
"My understanding of Jesus' ministry is that he told us not to go to war, and that he is at heart a peacemaker," Jefferts Schori said. "We understand our mission as a church to be reconciliation. There may be times when it's appropriate to go to war. I'm not convinced of that, but we live in a world that is not perfect."
Jefferts Schori also discussed continuing dissent in the Anglican Communion - the more than 70 million Christians worldwide affiliated with the Church of England - over the issue of accepting openly gay bishops.
So far, Episcopal Church relationships with other branches of Anglicans still have a lot of vitality, she said.

Non-Christian cult alert.
May the Lord protect KJS’ daughter and all others who serve in our armed forces.
It would be perfect indeed, if CJS would just let the dissenting parishes/dioceses go instead of declaring legal warfare on them. And if she truly loves Jesus, she should follow His admonition in Mark 6:13 to simply shake off the dust from under her feet and depart peacefully. But that scripture applies to believers only.
Whoops, Katharine Jefferts Schori’s initials are KJS, not CJS.
