1 Jn 5:14-21
Beloved:
We have this confidence in him
that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask,
we know that what we have asked him for is ours.
If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly,
he should pray to God and he will give him life.
This is only for those whose sin is not deadly.
There is such a thing as deadly sin,
about which I do not say that you should pray.
All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly.
We know that anyone begotten by God does not sin;
but the one begotten by God he protects,
and the Evil One cannot touch him.
We know that we belong to God,
and the whole world is under the power of the Evil One.
We also know that the Son of God has come
and has given us discernment to know the one who is true.
And we are in the one who is true,
in his Son Jesus Christ.
He is the true God and eternal life.

Jn 3:22-30
Jesus and his disciples went into the region of Judea,
where he spent some time with them baptizing.
John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim,
because there was an abundance of water there,
and people came to be baptized,
for John had not yet been imprisoned.
Now a dispute arose between the disciples of John and a Jew
about ceremonial washings.
So they came to John and said to him,
Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan,
to whom you testified,
here he is baptizing and everyone is coming to him.
John answered and said,
No one can receive anything except what has been given from heaven.
You yourselves can testify that I said that I am not the Christ,
but that I was sent before him.
The one who has the bride is the bridegroom;
the best man, who stands and listens for him,
rejoices greatly at the bridegrooms voice.
So this joy of mine has been made complete.
He must increase; I must decrease.

The month of January is traditionally dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus. This feast is also celebrated on January 3. Here is an explanation of the devotion.
Since the 16th century Catholic piety has associated entire months to special devotions. The devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus has been traditionally associated with the month of January, due to its celebration on January 3. The name Jesus was given to the Holy Child at God's command (Luke 1:31). The Holy Name is all-powerful because of the Person who bears it; we honor it because of the command of Christ, that we should pray in His Name and because it reminds us of all the blessings we receive through our Holy Redeemer. Hence St. Paul was able to write to the Philippians: ". . . at the name of Jesus every knee should bend of those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth" (Phil. 2:10). By means of this devotion we also make amends for improper use of the Holy Name.

| The marriage of Christ and the Church | |
| On the third day there was a wedding. What wedding can this be but the joyful marriage of mans salvation, a marriage celebrated by confessing the Trinity or by faith in the resurrection. That is why the marriage took place on the third day, a reference to the sacred mysteries which this number symbolises. Hence, too, we read elsewhere in the Gospel that the return of the younger son, that is, the conversion of the pagans, is marked by song, and music and wedding garments. Like a bridegroom coming from his marriage chamber our God descended to earth in his incarnation, in order to be united to his Church which was to be formed of the pagan nations. To her he gave a pledge and a dowry: a pledge when God was united to man; a dowry when he was sacrificed for mans salvation. The pledge is our present redemption; the dowry, eternal life. To those who see only with the outward eye, all these events at Cana are strange and wonderful; to those who understand, they are also signs. For, if we look closely, the very water tells us of our rebirth in baptism. One thing is turned into another from within, and in a hidden way a lesser creature is changed into a greater. All this points to the hidden reality of our second birth. There water was suddenly changed; later it will cause a change in man. By Christs action in Galilee, then, wine is made, that is, the law withdraws and grace takes its place; the shadows fade and truth becomes present; fleshly realities are coupled with spiritual, and the old covenant with its outward discipline is transformed into the new. For, as the Apostle says: The old order has passed away; now all is new! The water in the jars is not less than it was before, but now begins to be what it had not been; so too the law is not destroyed by Christs coming, but is made better than it was. When the wine fails, new wine is served: the wine of the old covenant was good but the wine of the new is better. The old covenant, which Jews follow, is exhausted by its letter; the new covenant, which belongs to us, has the savour of life and is filled with grace. The good wine, that is, good precepts, refers to the law; thus we read: You shall love your neighbour but hate your enemy. But the Gospel is a better and a stronger wine: My command to you is: love your enemies, pray for your persecutors. |

Saturday Christmas Weekday
Marguerite's humanitarian and Christian work in Canada was principally as educator and founder. The wilderness was so hard on the colonists that she had to wait for five years before children survived until school age. In the interim, she instructed the Indian children. In 1658 she opened her first school in a stone stable given her by the town leaders. Marguerite had a broad concept of education. She saw the school as a vehicle of religious and social development. Unique to her time she provided education for all, giving special attention to girls, the poor and the natives. Education in Marguerite's schools consisted in the basics of literacy, religious instruction, home economics and the arts.
Beyond the classroom, she worked with families, assisted in faith formation in the parish, and addressed the social service needs of the colonists. Noteworthy among her contributions to the colony are the special vocational schools she established to provide the domestic skills a young woman would need to run a home in the wilderness.
She became the official guardian to the "filles du roi", young orphan girls sent by the monarch to establish new families. She lodged them in her own home, served as a matchmaker, and prepared them for their new life as pioneers. Her signature appears as a witness on many of the early marriage contracts in Montreal. As a result of these activities she was affectionately referred to as "the Mother of the Colony". Marguerite made three trips back to France to recruit other women to join her in her work of education and to obtain civil approbation from the king.
Marguerite's apostolic spirituality was a special gift to the Church. She was a woman of action inserted into her time as is attested to by the mark she left on the history of Montreal and education in Canada. She was a woman of faith, deeply committed to the service of the Gospels. She was personally motivated by the missionary journeying of Mary in service to her cousin, Elizabeth, and desired to form a group of uncloistered women who would imitate Mary in this mystery of the Visitation.
Marguerite had an exceptional and practical love of God and neighbor. She had a great desire to serve the Church in its most local form, the parish. She exhorted her extern congregation of educators to be "daughters of the parish" - to worship with the people and use the local church as a source of spiritual nourishment.
Her Congregation received Church approbation in 1698 and at that time pronounced vows as uncloistered religious. Today the Congregation de Notre Dame numbers 2600 sisters in North America, Japan, Latin America and the Cameroons in service to the people of God in the spirit of the Visitation.
On November 12, 1950 Pope Pius XII beatified Marguerite Bourgeoys. Canonizing her October 31, 1982, Pope John Paul II gave the Canadian Church its first woman saint.

January 12, Saturday after Christmas
The day is also known as El Día de Los Reyes Magos (Magi) in Spanish and Epiphany in English commemorates the divinity of Christ as manifested to the Magi, the kings who brought him gifts. On the night before El Día de Los Reyes, the children fill their shoes with hay and leave them outside. It is believed that the Wise Men will stop at each home to feed their horses, leaving gifts in exchange for hay. Finally, El Día de Los Reyes arrives, and the whole family wakes up to open the gifts left by the Three Kings. However, this is only the beginning. On that day, family and friends gather, while the children keep busy playing with their new toys. | Saturday, January 12, 2008 Meditation John 3:22-30 This joy of mine has been made complete. (John 3:29) When his disciples asked him about a rival preacher named Jesus, John the Baptist made the unusual response that he was overjoyed that this other fellow was drawing such huge crowds. He knew that Jesus was not merely another preacher but the Bridegroom of his people and the fulfillment of Gods promises. As one who listened for the Bridegrooms voice, John rejoiced to see that the bridethe churchwas finally coming to her Bridegroom. The kingdom of God was breaking into the world in a new and decisive way! Do you know Jesus as your Bridegroomthe lover of your soul, and giver of all good things? Through his cross and resurrection, he has made the treasures of heavenly life available to us now. Are you in need? Jesus assures us that as we seek his kingdom, he will meet all our needs (Matthew 6:33). Are you afraid? he promises that nothing happens without the Fathers knowledge (10:28-29). Are you sick or suffering? Jesus is always with us, offering us his healing and strength (Mark 1:41). All of these promises and more are available to us in Christ. What an amazing gospel is ours! God, the almighty Creator of the universe, has humbled himself to be joined to us in an intimate union that draws us to heaven! But how do we receive these treasures and experience the power of the kingdom of God? By following Johns example: by decreasing to ourselves so that Jesus can increase in us (John 3:30). John didnt seek acclaim. Instead, he pointed to Jesus. If we humble ourselves, God will lift us up. If we decide to lose our own lives, we will be filled with life from our Bridegroom. Are you encumbered by sin? Jesus freely forgave even his tormentors (Luke 23:34). How much more will he forgive and love those who freely follow him and turn to him with repentant hearts! As we go to Jesus and throw off the sin that hinders us, the clouds obscuring our vision of Jesus will disappear. Jesus, my Bridegroom, how can I express my love for you? You have given me so much more than I could ever have asked or deserve. You are the holy Son of God, yet you are my intimate companion. I love you with all of my heart! 1 John 5:14-21; Psalm 149:1-6,9 |
Tomorrow is the last day of the Christmas season. The Lord has surprised us once again by loving us more this Christmas than we ever dreamed possible. But it's not over yet. As great as Christmas has been, the Lord may well have been saving the best till last (see Jn 2:10). He will bring Christmas to a glorious conclusion, but we must ask to receive the fullness of His love (Mt 7:7). "We have this confidence in God: that He hears us whenever we ask for anything according to His will. And since we know that He hears us whenever we ask, we know that what we have asked Him for is ours" (1 Jn 5:14-15). Ask the Father for the repentance and salvation of every member of your family. Ask Jesus to increase in your life while you decrease (Jn 3:30). Ask to hear Jesus' voice and to be overjoyed in the hearing (Jn 3:29). Intercede for those in authority to lead godly lives and make decisions according to God's will (1 Tm 2:1). Pray with Jesus for all to be one as He and the Father are One (Jn 17:21). Most of all, pray for all "to be saved and come to know the truth" (1 Tm 2:4). We haven't yet opened up our best Christmas presents. Ask and open.One Bread, One Body
