Tridentine Mass in San Francisco
Flyer | 2/16/08 | choirboy

Got a flyer this A.M. that reads:

Father William Young will begin celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass on Sundays at 11:30am on March 2, 2008 at Holy Rosary Chapel in Marin.

Take the Marinwood/St. Vincents Drive exit (Ramp 457) off Highway 101. At the stop sign turn right. Go East along St Vincents Drive toward the Bay rather than West toward Marinwood. You will see the Church about two-tenths of a mile down St Vincents Drive.

Fr. Young met with Archbishop Niederauer and Fr Padazinski on Ash Wednesday to make final arrangements for the Traditional Latin Mass to be celebrated on a regular basis in the Archdiocese of San Francisco in accord with Pope Benedict's Motu Proprio of July 7, 2007. The above Mass was approved at that meeting.

This is the first TLM in SF. It's out of the way across the Bay from the City. But it's a start.

This is the only picture of the chapel that I could find, and it dates from 1934.

There is now a Tridentine Mass celebrated by the same Father William Young at 5:30 PM of every 2nd Sunday at St. Finn Barr Church which is located right off lower Monterey Blvd, right below St. Francis Woods. St. Finn Barr’s is an easy drive for anyone living in the western area of San Francisco (Sunset, Parkside, etc.). I would encourage all other devotees of this sacred liturgy to come to this Mass, and, perhaps, even consider becoming a member of St. Finn Barr’s, a very charming Parish. This sort of support for the Traditional might encourage more such Masses...

Father also does a 6:30pm TLM at Mater Dolorosa in South San Fran on the first Sunday of the month. He will soon do a 7:00pm at Holy Names in SF as well as the TLM you mentioned at St Finn Barr :)

Do you know what Sunday the 7:00 Mass at Holy Name Church will be celebrated? And, again by Father Young?

On May 22, 2010 (Saturday) Father Young is holding a workshop on the Tridentine Mass at Mater Dolorosa in Daly City, 9AM - 3PM, in which he will try to cover just about everything: history, the ritual itself, the Gregorian chants, etc. People who virtually know nothing about the liturgy as well as potential altar boys are encouraged to attend, along with the old faithful die-hards. Food will be provided.

If you attended, did he mention the TLM at Holy Name? Like when it would start? Thanks.

Sunday October 17, 2010 7:15 PM

Father William Young will again be celebrating the Traditional High Latin Mass with Gregorian chior at Holy Name Church, 39th & Lawton, San Francisco. This is set to continue every third Sunday henceforth.

Please come and encourage others who appreciate. The Carmellite Chapel across from St. Ignatius Church and USF (which used to be a Catholic University) are next in line to host this Mass. If everyone supports, soon every Church in the Archdiocese will have back.
