Failing to recycle plastic bags could find you spending
eternity in Hell, the Vatican said after drawing up a
list of seven deadly sins for our times.

The seven, which include polluting the environment, were

I don’t recycle because the liberal fascists want me to do it; I continue to smoke because the liberal fascists don’t want me to do it; I stay up all night thinking of ways to increase my carbon footprint to spite Algore. Now I find that my Church may consider these as sins. Let’s see, hell or the liberal fascist paradise? Tough choice, but I guess I choose hell.

Respect for God’s Creation is important. It can obviously be taken too far (Al Gore), but the Pope’s comments have been pretty even-handed. As for the premise of the excerpt, that is just plain lazy inaccurate journalism.

He has been promoting the climate change meme, obviously, (as many/most of our leaders have been pressured to do), and gave his approval for a UN mission to the Artic for Religious leaders. (in writing) He has been mislead, as many have.

Religious leaders united in a silent “prayer for the planet” alongside a retreating Greenland glacier on Friday as part of a widening spiritual drive to combat climate change.

“In our small world we all need to struggle together,” said Sofie Petersen, the bishop of Greenland, of the meeting of Muslims, Jews, Buddhists and Christians aboard a cruise ship amid icebergs near Illulisat on the west coast.

Organisers said the prayer was to express common concern but stopping short of asking God to reverse the thaw. Such a request might have invited comparisons with the legendary vain attempt by 11th century English King Canute to stop the rising tide.

Patriarch Bartholomew, spiritual head of the world's Orthodox Christians, led a two-minute silent prayer aboard the cruise ship in the iceberg-clogged fjord during a symposium he is leading called “The Arctic: Mirror of Life”.

Arctic ice has shrunk this year to the smallest on record and almost all experts say that greenhouse gases from human use of fossil fuels are behind a thaw of recent decades. Warming may also bring rising seas, floods, erosion and desertification.

“We have duties towards our fellow men, but also duties to the whole of creation,” said Rene-Samuel Sirat, a former chief Rabbi of France who was among about 200 participants.

“This prayer is a recognition that we have spoiled the earth and we now need to rectify this by changing our lifestyles,” said Musharraf Hussein, a British Muslim leader. “We seek the help of our creator to acquire the strength and ability to make the necessary changes.”

POPAL APPROVAL

Pope Benedict gave his backing to the Greenland symposium on Wednesday in a new appeal for protection of the environment, saying issues such as climate change had become gravely important for the entire human race.

During the prayer, which ended with singing by an Inuit choir, the loudest sound was the lapping of water on icebergs in the fjord, participants said.

The North Atlantic island of Greenland has enough ice to raise world sea levels by about 7 metres (23 ft) if it all melted in coming millennia, swamping small island states and vast stretches of coast from Bangaldesh to Florida.

Scientists attending the symposium will also explain research into the melt, which is putting pressure on indigenous hunting cultures and wildlife such as polar bears and seals.

“It's remarkable how little ice there is now compared to when I was here a couple of years ago,” said Grete Hovelsrud, of the Centre for International Climate and Environmental Research in Oslo. “The rate of change has accelerated a lot and people are wondering ‘what is going on?’

“This event sends the message that climate change is upon us and we are all responsible,” said Aqqaluk Lynge, the head of Greenland's Inuit population. “We must stop harming creation. At this point Inuit philosophy meets all other religions.”

What is not included there was a quote from the Pope from that VERY SAME talk where he said that despite our responsibility for stewardship of the earth, plants and animals must not be made more important than human beings.

NEW YORK, FEB. 14, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI’s personal commitment to safeguarding the planet, shown in part by his numerous public appeals, has inspired a change in lifestyles in favor of the environment, the Holy See noted.

Archbishop Celestino Migliore, permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, affirmed this Wednesday during the 62nd session of the U.N. General Assembly titled “Addressing Climate Change: The United Nations and the World at Work.”

“The ongoing debate on climate change has helped put into focus the inescapable responsibility of one and all to care for the environment, thereby building consensus around the common objective of promoting a healthy environment for present and future generations,” he noted.

In this effort, he affirmed, “the Holy See assures of its collaboration.”

In particular, Archbishop Migliore noted the work done personally by the Holy Father.

“The personal commitment and numerous public appeals of Pope Benedict XVI have generated awareness campaigns for a renewed sense of respect for and the need to safeguard God’s creation,” he stated. “Individuals and communities have started to change their lifestyles, aware that personal and collective behavior impacts climate and the overall health of the environment.

“While such lifestyle changes at times may seem irrelevant, every small initiative to reduce or offset one’s carbon footprint, be it the avoidance of the unnecessary use of transport or the daily effort to reduce energy consumption, contributes to mitigating environmental decay and concretely shows commitment to environmental care.”

The prelate also noted the Holy See’s practical steps to participate in safeguarding the environment. He mentioned the solar panels scheduled to be installed at Vatican City State. One project will be finished this year and will provide all the energy needed for Paul VI hall. Surplus will be used at other locations.

And the archbishop noted participation in a tree planting project in Hungary, which will “will provide environmental benefits to the host country, assist in the recovery of an environmentally degraded tract of land, and provide local jobs.”

Archbishop Migliore highlighted the shared responsibility of individuals and nations in protecting the planet.

“It is incumbent upon every individual and nation to seriously assume one’s share of the responsibility to find and implement the most balanced approach possible to this challenge,” he said. “Sustainable development provides the key to a strategy that harmoniously takes into account the demands of environmental preservation, climate change, economic development and basic human needs.”

Clean and green

The Holy See representative encouraged the use of “clean technologies,” saying they are an “important component of sustainable development.”

And he recommended that developing countries be helped to learn from the mistakes made by their highly-industrialized counterparts.

“The pooling of resources makes initiatives of mitigation and adaptation economically accessible to most, thus assisting those less equipped to pursue development while safeguarding the environment,” he said.

Archbishop Migliore further urged that markets patronize “green economies” and not to “sustain demand for goods whose very production causes environmental degradation.”

“Consumers must be aware that their consumption patterns have direct impact on the health of the environment,” he stated. “Thus through interdependence, solidarity and accountability, individuals and nations together will be more able to balance the needs of sustainable development with those of good stewardship at every level.

“Indeed, the challenge of climate change is at once individual, local, national and global. Accordingly, it urges a multilevel coordinated response, with mitigation and adaptation programs simultaneously individual, local, national and global in their vision and scope.”

Why is this story still being posted. It is not accurate, it is not verified, it is not at all what was said.

I guess it is more important to post something that will generate ant-Catholic hysteria than it is to do some fact checking.

We all know how accurate the MSM is in reporting matters of religion. Yet if it places the Catholic Church in a bad light you embrace it.

Sheesh.

the “vatican” never made this statement to begin with.

They cannot run away from something that was never said.
