It's Not the Holy See, but We Like It
Washington Post ^ | 4/17/2008 | Dana Milbank

"In our nation," President Bush told Pope Benedict XVI at the White House yesterday, "faith and reason coexist in harmony."

Well, most of the time.

As the pontiff addressed an adoring crowd on the South Lawn -- about the time he mentioned the "sublime destiny of every man and woman" -- his gentle tones began to compete with a din coming from Pennsylvania Ave.

"I know what's in your religion! Drunkenness! Sexuality!" Larry Craft, stationed near the corner of 17th and Pennsylvania, shouted into his bullhorn. He carried a banner informing Catholics "Your priest is lying!" and shouted insults at passing priests: "Are they drunk today?"

The efforts of a dozen such hecklers stirred up the crowds of Catholics who had come to the White House gates to catch a glimpse of the Popemobile. They tried to drown out the Protestant protesters with songs and musical instruments, adding to a general cacophony that could be heard on the South Lawn.

Protesting the pope? On his first U.S. trip? On his 81st birthday, no less? It seemed to merit a new entry in the is-nothing-sacred category. But for His Holiness, it was all part of a quintessentially American welcome: well intentioned, but at times unruly and awkward....

I heard the same thing waiting to enter the Metro yesterday after the Mass. I bet they were the same people.

So His Holiness skipped the state dinner? That’s hilarious.

How very sad that someone would behave so badly. One can only imagine the home in which he was raised.

The reporter writes as though the reader is supposed to know who larry craft is. I’ve never heard of him, but I can safely assume he’s a POS.

"Well intentioned"? Surely not the hecklers.

“So His Holiness skipped the state dinner? That’s hilarious”

I read before his arrival that he wasn't expected to be present and that he seldom eats in a public venue - anywhere.

No reason not to have the state dinner for the other dignitaries!

This kind of crap was one of the many reasons that I left the United Methodist Socialist Party and became a Roman Catholic.

Catholics have no idea how much anti-Catholicism exists within many Protestant churches. Within the fundamentalist, pentacostal groups, it's rampant.

Street Preacher Larry Craft

Not the sort of behavior that would draw me to Jesus but each to his own.

I remember walking down the street of a large city on one occasion and seeing a "street preacher" ( a woman) warning the passing throng to repent now or burn in hell for ever. I thought to myself, "yes, that's a message we all need to hear from time to time", so as I walked past I smiled at her, thinking it would give her encouragement amongst the abuse she undoubtedly took.

As we locked eyes she saw my smile and taking her cue off it she boomed, "Why do you smile?? You'll not smile when you're in hell!!!"

Oh well........some people are just stuck in a joyless, "damn you all" mentality.

This reporter is an idiot.

The Pope requested The Battle Hymn (in the grand old Peter Wilhousky arrangement, don't know whether he requested that particularly, but he may have, because it was played at Reagan's memorial service.)

And the Pope does not dine in public. Period. Ever. Even Fox News managed to stumble across that fact several days ago.

Just an opportunity for the WaPo to do a little Catholic-bashing . . . whether by their reporter or by Larry with the bullhorn.

They could probably all use some prayers . . . .

Poor lady may have thought you were laughing at her.

My husband was on the subway in Newark NJ, riding to work, when an enormous and boisterous lady street preacher accosted him and demanded, "Can I PRAY for YOU?"

He just smiled and said, "Suit yourself ma'am."

That Catholic with "no idea" would be me.

Until about 3-4 years ago.

Since then, quite a few hours spent on the FR religion forum have woken me up abruptly.

Cool! Then I guess he was aware of the lyrics. Do you remember where you read about that?

Well, just as the Papal visit gives Catholics a once in a lifetime chance to practice certain aspects of their faith, it also gives some protestants an opportunity to act out the defining, fundamental action of theirs.

I just meant that the pope’s visit is a really big deal to us Catholics, and it shows the protestants for what they have always been... protesters.

I saw a video on youtube where some obnoxious fundamentalist was talking on a bullhorn on Pennsylvania Ave. about how Catholics would bow down and worship a potato chip that looked like the Virgin Mary.
