EGAN BLASTS RUDY FOR RECEIVING COMMUNION

April 28, 2008 --

NEW YORK - New York Cardinal Edward Egan says Rudy Giuliani should not have received Holy Communion during the pope's visit because he supports abortion rights.

Egan says he had "an understanding" with the former presidential candidate and New York mayor that he is not to receive the Eucharist. The Catholic Church teaches "that abortion is a grave offense against the will of God."

The cardinal says Giuliani broke that understanding when he received the Eucharist during Pope Benedict XVI's visit.

Egan says he will be seeking a meeting with Giuliani "to insist that he abide by our understanding."

Giuliani's spokeswoman, Sunny Mindel, said Monday that he is willing to meet with the cardinal but added that his faith "is a deeply personal matter."

Egan's statement does not address the fact that Giuliani is on his third marriage.

Did Egan give instructions not to distribute Communion to Giuliani?

You can have your own opinions, but you can't have your own facts.
You can have a personal faith, but you can't have your own sacraments.

Well - pehaps this pope has “inspired” cardinals to find their backbones.

We need the “Crozier of St. Lumbar” graphic.

How about the fact that he shouldn’t be taking Holy Communion because he is remarried. (and outside the Church) This is for his own protection. He is harming himself greatly by taking Communion unworthily.

but added that his faith "is a deeply personal matter."

In other words, Giuliani's Catholic faith is none of the Catholic Church's business.

“New York Cardinal Edward Egan”

That’s why. It is up to the bishops of the other diocese to pastor their flock, not to Egan. The best he can do here is to lead.

‘Giuliani’s spokeswoman, Sunny Mindel, said Monday that he is willing to meet with the cardinal but added that his faith “is a deeply personal matter.” ‘

Giuliani’s faith is so personal, he won’t even enforce it on himself.

Giuliani’s shepherd is Archbishop Egan.

Egan is not the shepherd of any those you mention.

Dammit - when Rudy feels like taking communion, he will take it!

Pope be damned.

I think that Egan has been pretty straightforward in the past, and that Rudy has been well warned by him. I suspect this is the final chapter of Rudy’s association with The Church. He’s going to have a chance for real soul searching and confession, though, I would guess.

You beat me to it.

The Pope of the Church of Saint Rudy.

He's not the first to declare himself head of his own church on account of wanting a divorce and remarriage.

But King Henry is still ahead of him in the matter of wives, and Saint Rudy hasn't offed any of his yet . . . .

New York is his Archdiocese. Archbishop Wuerl needs to clean up D.C.'s act.

i for one hope he never gets the red hat.

I know where you are coming from, but there has to be some sort of limit, right? I mean, if a bishop observes a national public figure who condones and facilitates Satanism at every opportunity (and publicly proclaims Satanism is perfectly compatible with Church teaching) in the Communion line but whose base of operations isn’t in his diocese, what should he do?
