Acts 22:30; 23:6-11
Wishing to determine the truth
about why Paul was being accused by the Jews,
the commander freed him
and ordered the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin to convene.
Then he brought Paul down and made him stand before them.
Paul was aware that some were Sadducees and some Pharisees,
so he called out before the Sanhedrin,
My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees;
I am on trial for hope in the resurrection of the dead.
When he said this,
a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees,
and the group became divided.
For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection or angels or spirits,
while the Pharisees acknowledge all three.
A great uproar occurred,
and some scribes belonging to the Pharisee party
stood up and sharply argued,
We find nothing wrong with this man.
Suppose a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?
The dispute was so serious that the commander,
afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them,
ordered his troops to go down and rescue Paul from their midst
and take him into the compound.
The following night the Lord stood by him and said, Take courage.
For just as you have borne witness to my cause in Jerusalem,
so you must also bear witness in Rome.

On the day of 8 May
Today the Roman Martyrology commemorates at Milan, the birthday of St. Victor, martyr. He was by nationality a Moor, but was a Christian from his early years. While he was a soldier in the imperial camp, he was required by Maximian to sacrifice to the idols, but remained steadfast in the faith. For that reason, he was first severely beaten with clubs, but through the protection of God he received no injury; molten lead was then poured over him, and again he suffered no harm; at last, he completed a glorious martyrdom by being beheaded.

May Devotion: Blessed Virgin Mary

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Toward the end of the eighteenth century a zealous Jesuit priest, Father Lalomia, started among the students of the Roman college of his Society the practice of dedicating May to Our Lady. The devotion, which others had promoted in a small way, soon spread to other Jesuit Colleges and to the entire Latin church and since that time it has been a regular feature of Catholic life.

Seen above is the Blessed Virgin Mary, portrayed as Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
It was she who was chosen by God, to provide His Son with His Sacred Humanity.

[30] But on the morrow, desiring to know the real reason why the Jews accused
him, he (the tribune) unbound him, and commanded the chief priests and all the
council to meet, and he brought Paul down and set him before them.
[6] But when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Phari-
sees, he cried out in the council, “Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees;
with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead I am on trial.” [7] And
when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sad-
ducees; and the assembly was divided. [8] For the Sadducees say that there is
no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.
[9] Then a great clamor arose; and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ party
stood up and contended, ‘We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit of

Commentary:
30. This does not seem to have been a regular session of the Sanhedrin; it is an
informal one arranged by Lysias (Acts 23:26) to enable documentation to be pre-
pared, now that “evidence” cannot be extracted from Paul by torture.
6-9. From St Luke’s Gospel (cf. 20:27) we know that the Sadducees, unlike the
Pharisees, did not believe in a future resurrection of the dead. This is the only
place in the New Testament where it says that they also denied the existence
of angels and spirits; however, this is confirmed by Jewish and secular sources.
In the course of his trial, Paul brings up a subject which sets his judges at each
other. Personal advantage is not his main reason for doing this. He is obviously
very shrewd, but he really does not expect to get an impartial hearing from the
Sanhedrin. Therefore he tries to stir their consciences and awaken their love for
the truth and thereby elicit some sympathy for Christians. Although Christian
belief in the Resurrection was not the same thing as the Pharisees’ belief, the
two had this in common: they believed in the resurrection of the dead.
9. They are referring to his vision on the road to Damascus. They are not going
as far as to say that it was Jesus who spoke to Paul, but they do not rule out the
possibility that he had a genuine spiritual experience.
11. The Lord is Jesus. These words of consolation to Paul show him that God will
guide him all along, right up to his court appearance in Rome.

Commentary:
20-23. Since it is Christ who is praying for the Church His prayer is infallibly ef-
fective, and therefore there will always be only one true Church of Jesus Christ.
Unity is therefore an essential property of the Church. “We believe that the
Church founded by Jesus Christ and for which He prayed is indefectibly one in
faith, in worship and in the bond of hierarchical communion” ([Pope] Paul VI,
“Creed of the People of God”, 21). Moreover, Christ’s prayer also indicates
what the basis of the Church’s unity will be and what effects will follow from it.
The source from which the unity of the Church flows is the intimate unity of the
Three Divine Persons among whom there is mutual love and self-giving. “The
Lord Jesus, when praying to the Father `that they may all be one...even as we
are one’ (John 17:21-22), has opened up new horizons closed to human reason
by implying that there is a certain parallel between the union existing among
the Divine Persons and the union of the sons of God in truth and love. It follows,
then, that if man is the only creature on earth that God has wanted for its own
sake, man can fully discover his true self only in a sincere giving of himself”
(Vatican II, “Gaudium Et Spes”, 24). The unity of the Church is also grounded
on the union of the faithful with Jesus Christ and through Him with the Father
(verse 23). Thus, the fullness of unity—”consummati in unum”—is attained
through the supernatural grace which comes to us from Christ (cf. John 15:5).
The fruits of the unity of the Church are, on the one hand, the world believing in
Christ and in His divine mission (verses 21, 23); and, on the other hand, Chris-
tians themselves and all men recognizing God’s special love for His faithful, a
love which is a reflection of the love of the Three Divine Persons for each other.
And so, Jesus’ prayer embraces all mankind, for all are invited to be friends of
God (cf. 1 Timothy 2:4). “Thou hast loved them even as Thou hast loved Me”:
this, according to St. Thomas Aquinas, “does not mean strict equality of love
but similarity and like-motivation. It is as if He were saying: the love with which
You have loved Me is the reason and the cause of Your loving them, for, pre-
cisely because You love men do You love those who love Me” (”Commentary
on St. John, in loc.”). Besides noting this theological explanation, we should
also ponder on how expressively Christ describes His ardent love for men.
The entire discourse of the Last Supper gives us a glimpse of the depth of
Jesus’ feelings—which infinitely exceeds anything we are capable of experien-
cing. Once again all we can do is bow down before the mystery of
God-made-man.
20. Christ prays for the Church, for all those who, over the course of centuries,
will believe in Him through the preaching of the Apostles. “That divine mission,
which was committed by Christ to the Apostles, is destined to last until the end
of the world (cf. Matthew 28:20), since the Gospel, which they were charged to
hand on, is, for the Church, the principle of all its life for all time. For that very
reason the Apostles were careful to appoint successors in this hierarchically
constituted society” (Vatican II, “Lumen Gentium”, 20).
The apostolic origin and basis of the Church is what is termed its “apostolicity”,
a special characteristic of the Church which we confess in the Creed. Aposto-
licity consists in the Pope and the Bishops being successors of Peter and the
Apostles, holding the authority of the Apostles and proclaiming the same tea-
ching as they did. “The sacred synod teached that the bishops have by divine
institution taken the place of the Apostles as pastors of the Church, in such
wise that whoever listens to them is listening to Christ and whoever despises
them despises Christ and Him who sent Christ (cf. Luke 10:15)” (Vatican II,
“Lumen Gentium”, 20).
21. Union of Christians with Christ begets unity among themselves. This unity
of the Church ultimately redounds to the benefit of all mankind, because since
the Church is one and unique, she is seen as a sign raised up for the nations to
see, inviting all to believe in Christ as sent by God come to save all men. The
Church carries on this mission of salvation through its union with Christ, calling
all mankind to join the Church and by so doing to share in union with Christ and
the Father.
The Second Vatican Council, speaking of the principles of ecumenism, links the
Church’s unity with her universality: “Almost everyone, though in different ways,
longs for the one visible Church of God, a Church truly universal and sent forth to
the whole world that the world may be converted to the Gospel and so be saved,
to the glory of God” (”Unitatis Redintegratio”, 1). This universality is another
characteristic of the Church, technically described as “catholicity”. “For many
centuries now the Church has been spread throughout the world, and it numbers
persons of all races and walks of life. But the universality of the Church does not
depend on its geographical distribution, even though this is a visible sign and of
motive of credibility. The Church was catholic already at Pentecost: it was born
catholic from the wounded heart of Jesus, as a fire which the Holy Spirit enkin-
dled.
“In the second century the Christians called the Church catholic in order to dis-
tinguish it from sects, which, using the name of Christ, were betraying His doc-
trine in one way or another. `We call it catholic’, writes St. Cyril, `not only
because it is spread throughout the world, from one extreme to the other, but
because in a universal way and without defect it teaches all the dogmas which
men ought to know, of both the visible and the invisible, the celestial and the
earthly. Likewise because it draws to true worship all types of men, governors
and citizens, the learned and the ignorant. And finally, because it cures and
heals all kinds of sins, whether of the soul or of the body, possessing in addition
—by whatever name it may be called —all the forms of virtue, in deeds and in
words and in every kind of spiritual life’ (”Catechesis”, 18, 23)” (St. J. Escriva,
“In Love with the Church”, 9).
Every Christian should have the same desire for this unity as Jesus Christ ex-
presses in His prayer to the Father. “A privileged instrument for participation in
pursuit of the unity of all Christians is prayer. Jesus Christ Himself left us His
final wish for unity through prayer to the Father: `that they also may be in us,
so that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me’ (John 17:21).
“Also the Second Vatican Council strongly recommended to us prayer for the
unity of Christians, defining it `the soul of the whole ecumenical movement’
(”Unitatis Redintegratio”, 8). As the soul to the body, so prayer gives life, con-
sistency, spirit, and finality to the ecumenical movement.
“Prayer puts us, first and foremost, before the Lord, purifies us in intentions, in
sentiments, in our heart, and produces that `interior conversion’, without which
there is no real ecumenism. (cf. “Unitatis Redintegratio”, 7).
“Prayer, furthermore, reminds us that unity, ultimately, is a gift from God, a gift
for which we must ask and for which we must prepare in order that we may be
granted it” (John Paul II, “General Audience”, 17 January 1979).
22-23. Jesus possess glory, a manifestation of divinity, because He is God, equal
to the Father (cf. note on John 17:1-5). When He says that He is giving His dis-
ciples this glory, He is indicating that through grace He makes us partakers of the
divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). Glory and justification by grace are very closely united,
as we can see from Sacred Scripture: “Those whom He predestined He also called,
and those whom He called He also justified, and those whom He justified He also
glorified” (Romans 8:30). The change grace works in Christians makes us ever
more like Christ, who is the likeness of the Father (cf. 2 Corinthians 4:4; Hebrews
1:2-3): by communicating His glory Christ joins the faithful to God by giving them
a share in supernatural life, which is the source of the holiness of Christians and
of the Church: “Now we can understand better how [...] one of the principal aspects
of her holiness is that unity centered on the mystery of the one and triune God.
`There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that
belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of us
all, who is above all and through all and in all’ (Ephesians 4:4-6)” (St. J. Escriva,
“In Love with the Church”, 5).
24. Jesus concludes His prayer by asking that all Christians attain the blessed-
ness of Heaven. The word He uses, “I desire”, not “I pray”, indicates that He is
asking for the most important thing of all, for what His Father wants—that all may
be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth (cf. 1 Timothy 2:4): which is
essentially the mission of the Church—the salvation of souls.
As long as we are on earth we share in God’s life through knowledge (faith) and
love (charity); but only in Heaven will we attain the fullness of this supernatural life,
when we see God as He is (cf. 1John 3:2), face to face (cf. 1 Corinthians 13:9-12).
Therefore, the Church has her sights fixed on eternity, she is eschatological: that
is, by having in this world all the resources necessary for teaching God’s truth, for
endering Him true worship and communicating the life of grace, she keeps alive
people’s hope of attaining the fullness of eternal life: “The Church, to which we are
all called in Christ Jesus, and in which by the grace of God we acquire holiness,
will receive its perfection only in the glory of Heaven, when will come the time of
the renewal of all things (Acts 3:21). At that time, together with the human race,
the universe itself, which is so closely related to man and which attains its destiny
through him, will be perfectly reestablished in Christ (cf. Ephesians 1:10; Colos-
sians 1:20; 2 Peter 3:10-13)” (Vatican II, “Lumen Gentium”, 48).
25-26. God’s revelation of Himself through Christ causes us to begin to share in
the divine life, a sharing which will reach its climax in Heaven: “God alone can give
us right and full knowledge of this reality by revealing Himself as Father, Son and
Holy Spirit, in whose eternal life we are by grace called to share, here below in the
obscurity of faith and after death in eternal light” ([Pope] Paul VI, “Creed of the
People of God”).
Christ has revealed to us all we need to know in order to participate in the mutual
love of the Divine Persons—primarily, the mystery of who He is and what His mis-
sion is and, with that, the mystery of God Himself (”I made known to them Thy
name”), thus fulfilling what He had announced: “No one knows the Father except
the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him” (Matthew 11:27).
Christ continues to make known His Father’s love, by means of the Church, in
which He is always present: “I am with you always, to the close of the age”
(Matthew 28:20).

After Christ had completed his mission on earth, it still remained necessary for us to become sharers in the divine nature of the Word. We had to give up our own life and be so transformed that we would begin to live an entirely new kind of life that would be pleasing to God. This was something we could do only by sharing in the Holy Spirit. It was most fitting that the sending of the Spirit and his descent upon us should take place after the departure of Christ our Saviour. As long as Christ was with them in the flesh, it must have seemed to believers that they possessed every blessing in him; but when the time came for him to ascend to his heavenly Father, it was necessary for him to be united through his Spirit to those who worshipped him, and to dwell in our hearts through faith. Only by his own presence within us in this way could he give us confidence to cry out, Abba, Father, make it easy for us to grow in holiness and, through our possession of the all-powerful Spirit, fortify us invincibly against the wiles of the devil and the assaults of men. It can easily be shown from examples both in the Old Testament and the New that the Spirit changes those in whom he comes to dwell; he so transforms them that they begin to live a completely new kind of life. Saul was told by the prophet Samuel: The Spirit of the Lord will take possession of you, and you shall be changed into another man. Saint Paul writes: As we behold the glory of the Lord with unveiled faces, that glory, which comes from the Lord who is the Spirit, transforms us all into his own likeness, from one degree of glory to another. Does this not show that the Spirit changes those in whom he comes to dwell and alters the whole pattern of their lives? With the Spirit within them it is quite natural for people who had been absorbed by the things of this world to become entirely other-worldly in outlook, and for cowards to become men of great courage. There can be no doubt that this is what happened to the disciples. The strength they received from the Spirit enabled them to hold firmly to the love of Christ, facing the violence of their persecutors unafraid. Very true, then, was our Saviours saying that it was to their advantage for him to return to heaven: his return was the time appointed for the descent of the Holy Spirit. |

The feast of the apparition of St. Michael was on the General Calendar of the Roman Rite before 1962. The feast commemorates an apparition of St. Michael on the summit of Monte Gargano, in Italy on the Adriatic coast, and the dedication of the sanctuary built on the site of the apparition.
Apparition of St. MichaelIt is evident from Holy Scripture that God is pleased to make frequent use of the ministry of the heavenly spirits in the dispensations of His providence in this world. The Angels are all pure spirits; by a property of their nature they are immortal, as is every spirit. They have the power of moving or conveying themselves at will from place to place, and such is their activity that it is not easy for us to conceive of it. Among the holy Archangels, Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are particularly distinguished in the Scriptures. Saint Michael, whose name means
Who is like unto God?, is the prince of the faithful Angels who opposed Lucifer and his followers in their revolt against God. Since the devil is the sworn enemy of Gods holy Church, Saint Michael is given to it by God as its special protector against the demons assaults and stratagems.
Various apparitions of this powerful Angel have proved the protection of Saint Michael over the Church. We may mention his apparition in Rome, where Saint Gregory the Great saw him in the air sheathing his sword, to signal the cessation of a pestilence and the appeasement of Gods wrath. Another apparition to Saint Ausbert, bishop of Avranches in France, led to the construction of Mont-Saint-Michel in the sea, a famous pilgrimage site. May 8th, however, is destined to recall another no less marvelous apparition, occurring near Monte Gargano in the Kingdom of Naples.
In the year 492 a man named Gargan was pasturing his large herds in the countryside. One day a bull fled to the mountain, where it could not be found. When its refuge in a cave was discovered, an arrow was shot into the cave, but the arrow returned to wound the one who had sent it. Faced with this mysterious occurrence, the persons concerned decided to consult the bishop of the region. He ordered three days of fasting and prayers. After three days, the Archangel Michael appeared to the bishop and declared that the cavern where the bull had taken refuge was under his protection, and that God wanted it to be consecrated under his name and in honor of all the Holy Angels.
Accompanied by his clergy and people, the pontiff went to that cavern, which he found already disposed in the form of a church. The divine mysteries were celebrated there, and there arose in this same place a magnificent temple where the divine Power has wrought great miracles. To thank Gods adorable goodness for the protection of the holy Archangel, the effect of His merciful Providence, this feast day was instituted by the Church in his honor.
It is said of this special guardian and protector of the Church that, during the final persecution of Antichrist, he will powerfully defend it: At that time shall Michael rise up, the great prince who protects the children of thy people.

The Supplica
May 8th is the Feast of Our Lady of Pompei. In Italy and in places all over the globe the feast will be marked by the solemn recitation at noon of Blessed Bartolo Longo's moving prayer, the Supplica, meaning supplication or petition.
The Prayer of People the World Over
The Supplica is, of Blessed Bartolo Longo's published prayers to the Mother of God, the most famous. Its incandescent words have opened countless souls to the grace of Christ through the allpowerful intercession of His Mother.
The Supplica is a prayer that people have made their own. It is known on every continent; it has been translated into hundreds of languages. No authority ever imposed it, it is not part of the liturgy of the Church, it was never submitted to revision by ICEL, and yet, it has become universal. Sociologists of religion, take note! Translators of liturgical texts, wake up and smell the Italian coffee!
A Prayer of the Heart
Certain rationalistic types disdain the Supplica. They see it as representative of an unenlightened, sentimental, southern Italian piety bordering on superstition. They find its emphases embarrassing, its display of emotion unnerving.
The literary style of Blessed Bartolo Longo is the expression of his own character. He was capable of gentleness and of passion. He was, like all meridionals, rich in sentiment and quick to express it both in song and in tears. He was moved, before all else, by the reason of the heart.
Blessed Longo was a lover of Truth; but his particular grace was the discovery of Truth through love. He found Truth, not in syllogisms and in concepts, but in the Heart and on the Face of the Word Made Flesh in the womb of the Virgin, and held in her arms.
The Prayer of One Delivered From Evil
The Rosary was the means by which, at the age of twentyeight, a confused and desperate Avvocato Bartolo Longo a practicing Satanist and medium at the time was converted to the Truth and delivered from the powers of darkness. He vowed that he would spend his life proclaiming to others the Rosary's liberating and healing power. This is why, at the end of the Supplica, he exclaims: "O blessed Rosary of Mary, sweet chain which unites us to God, bond of love which unites us to the angels, tower of salvation against the assaults of hell, safe port in our universal shipwreck, we shall never abandon you."

Bound to Mary by the Rosary
The Supplica may not be everyone's cup of tea. Even pious folks may find it a bit too baroque, a bit overdone. It may be the southern Italian blood (mixed with Irish) that runs hot in my veins, but I love the Supplica and I plan on saying it with thousands of other people today. It is the prayer of a man very like myself: a poor sinner who fears nothing when he holds the Rosary in his hands, knowing that the Mother of God holds her end of the chain, and will not let it go.

O August Queen of Victories, O Sovereign of Heaven and Earth, at whose name the heavens rejoice and the abyss trembles, O glorious Queen of the Rosary, we your devoted children, assembled in your temple of Pompeii, (on this solemn day), pour out the affection of our heart and with filial confidence expresse our miseries to you.
From the throne of clemency, where you are seated as Queen, turn, O Mary, your merciful gaze on us, on our families, on Italy, on Europe, on the world. Have compassion on the sorrows and cares which embitter our lives. See, O Mother, how many dangers of body and soul, how many calamities and afflictions press upon us.
O Mother, implore for us the mercy of your divine Son and conquer with clemency the heart of sinners. They are our brothers and your children who cause the heart of our sweet Jesus to bleed and who sadden your most sensitive heart. Show all that you are the Queen of Peace and of Pardon.
Hail Mary.
It is true that although we are your children we are the first to crucify Jesus by our sins and to pierce anew your heart.
We confess that we are deserving of severe punishment, but remember that, on Golgotha, you received with the divine blood, the testament of the dying Savior, who declared you to be our Mother, the Mother of sinners.
You then, as our Mother, are our Advocate, our Hope. And we raise our suppliant hands to you with sighs crying "Mercy!" O good Mother, have pity on us, on our souls, on our families, our relatives, our friends, our deceased, especially our enemies, and on so many who call themselves Christian and yet offend the heart of your loving Son. Today we implore pity for the misguided nations throughout all Europe, throughout the world, so that they may return repentant to your heart.
Hail Mary.
Kindly deign to hear us. O Mary! Jesus has placed in your hands all the treasures of his graces and mercies. You are seated a crowned Queen at the right hand of your Son, resplendent with immortal glory above the choirs of angels. Your dominion extends throughout heaven and earth and all creatures are subject to you.
You are omnipotent by grace and therefore you can help us. Were you not willing to help us, since we are ungrateful children and undeserving of your protection, we would not know to whom to turn. Your motherly heart would not permit you see us, your children, lost. The Infant whom we see on your knees and the blessed rosary which we see in your hand, inspire confidence in us that we shall be heard. We confide fully in you, we abandon ourselves as helpless children into the arms of the most tender of mothers, and on this day, we expect from you the graces we so long for.

One last favour we now ask of you, O Queen, which you cannot refuse us (on this most solemn day): Grant to all of us your steadfast love and in a special manner your maternal blessing. We shall not leave you until you have blessed us. Bless, O Mary, at this moment, our Holy Father. To the ancient splendors of your crown, to the triumphs of your Rosary, whence you are called the Queen of Victories, add this one also, O Mother: grant the triumph of religion and peace to human society. Bless our bishops, priests and particularly all those who are zealous for the honor of your sanctuary. Bless finally all those who are associated with your temple of Pompeii and all those who cultivate and promote devotion to your Holy Rosary.
O blessed Rosary of Mary, sweet chain which unites us to God, bond of love which unites us to the angels, tower of salvation against the assaults of hell, safe port in our universal shipwreck, we shall never abandon you. You will be our comfort in the hour of agony: to you the last kiss of our dying life. And the last word from our lips will be your sweet name, O Queen of the Rosary of Pompeii, O dearest Mother, O Refuge of Sinners, O Sovereign Consoler of the Afflicted. Guided by the Holy Spirit, our testimony has the power to help others believe in God. Actions, too, are eloquent and are an invitation for others to see the goodness of God in us. When we are disciples of Christ in our words and actions, we make Jesus prayer a reality: I pray for all those who will believe in me through their word. 2. That They May Be One Have you ever spent time putting a jigsaw puzzle together only to find the last piece missing? We all come in different shapes and sizes, with different gifts and talents. Yet, despite our differences, Gods plan for us is to be united with him and, in him, with each other. He brings about this unity through his Body, the Church. When we cooperate with Gods grace, we are allowing the Holy Spirit to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. When we sin, we disrupt unity and put ourselves at risk of being that missing piece of the puzzle. When we love God and neighbor, we allow God to bring about perfection: like a puzzle without a single missing piece. 3. Lord, I Believe When Jesus walked the earth two thousand years ago he walked in the company of his disciples. They were the ones he physically saw and taught. He conversed with them, ate with them, and shaped them to be his true followers. Yet, because he is also God, he saw more than just the disciples who were with him at that precise historical moment. In his prayer, he saw each and every person who would come to know and love him down through the centuries. He prayed for the things which were dearest to his heart: He prayed for us. He himself says: Father, they are your gift to me. Our faith is life-changing because we believe in a God who knows and loves us personally. He alone can satisfy all of our needs. Conversation with Christ: Jesus, you have called me to be your intimate friend. You love me so much, that the life you share with the Father and the Holy Spirit you also share with me. While you were on this earth, you knew me and prayed for me. I want to live this day by your side and attract others to you by my words and good example. Resolution: I will say a kind word to someone whom I may have injured carelessly in my speech.

Acts 22:30; 23:6-10 / Jn 17:20-26
Several interesting patterns have shown themselves as weve read through the Acts of the Apostles these past seven weeks. On the one hand, theres the joy that so many people experience as they come to know the Good News of Jesus, and on the other, theres the anger and violence with which so many react to the preaching of this same Good News.
Why are the reactions so very different from people of similar backgrounds? The answer lies inside, in the fear-driven rigidity and brittleness of the one group and in the hope-driven confidence and openness of the other.
Long ago, Cardinal Newman said that to grow is to change and to become perfect is to have changed often. True enough, but wholesome growth and change are possible only for those who have solid roots in God, the ground of our being. Fear stifles growth and allows only one kind of action, and that is attack.
Dont waste your life being angry and defending the indefensible. Let faith open your inner doors to the Spirit who brings growth, change, and joy.

Meditation John 17:20-26
Have you ever been invited to someones house for dinner, and felt right at home? You dont remember whether the house was clean, if the kids were too noisy, or if the food wasnt quite what youd expected. Most likely you remember the warmth you felt, how well everyone got along, and how hard it was to leave. You had a sense of belonging. In fact, you almost felt like part of the family! When Jesus prayed that we become one, he was asking for just this kind of unity among Christians. He wanted the world to be able to look at us and say, This feels like home! He knew that others would be convinced not by what we looked like but by the love we were able to share. That love comes from his sacrifice on the cross, and it gives us the power to become living examples of unity and brotherhood. Its not about achieving perfection firstJesus has already done that for us. So how do we do ecumenism? Like the family who invites us for dinner, we dont start by bringing up all our differences with the guest. If we dont know where someone is in his or her walk with the Lord, its probably a good idea to stay away from sensitive topics. Instead, we can focus on what we do have in common: As baptized Christians, we are already one body, given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13). The stranger we are talking to is actually our blood relative, and thats something we can both rejoice in! Once weve gotten through the introductions, we will naturally want to share something with our brothers and sistersand what could be more natural than prayer? No matter what our denomination, we know that when we are two or more praying in his name, Jesus is with us. Praying alongside those of other traditions will open our hearts to be more loving toward them. It will help us to repent of any judgmental attitudes we may have picked up about them. And it will show us how much they have to offerfor if we really are one body, then we need them as much as they need us! Lord, send out your Spirit, and give all Christians the strength and wisdom to reach out to one another. Heal the wounds of your body, and make it whole! Acts 22:30; 23:6-11; Psalm 16:1-2,5,7-11 |
