Prayers going up. Lost a great friend to ALS last year. He was 42. My suggestions? It’s going to be difficult. Don’t bail. Be there when it gets hard. Many fair weather friends disappeared in about the last 6 months of his life, which is when he and the family will need you most. Do whatever the family needs, cleaning, mowing, providing meals, praying, reading. Get a team of friends together who are willing to pitch in and help them get their house prepared for wheelchair accessibility. My husband wrote letters as our friend dictated them to his children and friends. Just be there and be willing to listen and pitch in to help. God Bless.
Ask them what they need. Ask often. Initially, they might say they are OK, but as time goes on, they will need help.
Pull up as close to those kids as they will let you. They will need adult friends to help them put this in perspective over the next few years.
Insist that they get in touch with MDA if they haven’t already. They have an ALS division that really can help them.
Prayers up for the whole family!
Prayer, meals, chores - all great suggestions. Try your best to continue to do the things that you have done together during your friendship, even as the logistics become increasingly difficult. For example, maybe you can no longer go deep sea fishing together, but fishing off a dock or pier accessible by wheelchair might still be feasible, even if your friend can no longer reel them in. The ALS patient’s cognitive functions are still working, and continuing to build memories is important for their well being. God bless you for your faithful friendship.
ALS is a neurological disease. Take a look at “The Better Brain Book” by David Perlmutter, MD. and neurologist. He has some helpful suggestions. I would also recommend a hair analysis to check for mercury levels. I would embark on a systematic detoxification program to remove toxins. A product called Natural Cellular Defense is a good oral detoxifier. I’ll try to suggest more at a later time.

My suggestion is to simply be there. Be there to offer the family members brief respites, meals, prayers, laughs, chores, etc.
Offer to help organize things if they’d like. Ask what they need.
And always, prayers and loving friendship.
I will certainly pray for your friend and his family. This is a particularly horrible disease.
I recently read about a former Baltimore Raven, who had been diagnosed with ALS. He was continuing to work in the Ravens front office with the help of his wife.
It’s nice to be able to read some good things about sone professional athletes. I thought that his story was inspiring.

Prayers for your friend. My Mother passed away March 28 from ALS. She had been diagnosed about 2 and a half years ago. It was a long slow painful thing to see.
