Elissa Wall Speaks Out About Her 'Stolen Innocence'

Forced Into Marriage at 14, She Testified Against Polygamous Prophet Warren Jeffs

By JOSEPH DIAZ

May 16, 2008 —

The recent raid on Warren Jeffs' Yearning for Zion ranch in Eldorado, Texas, which resulted in the removal of more than 400 children from their homes, has thrust allegations of widespread child abuse at the polygamous sect into the national spotlight.

But one of the darkest secrets of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints unfolds at a seedy roadside motel in the remote Nevada desert, where underage girls --some as young as 14 --are allegedly forced through hasty and secret wedding ceremonies.

Elissa Wall says she was one such 14-year-old who was taken to the motel and plunged into wedlock with no choice but to accept and obey the command of Jeffs.

Sam Brower, a private detective who has spent five years investigating Jeffs and his sect for a number of former members, says the weddings are done "covertly, real cloak-and-dagger like."

Wall, now 21, told ABC News' John Quinones that, "I was trapped. I felt like I had nowhere to turn. I did not want to go through with this marriage. I felt, honestly, what it was like to die."

Watch the story tonight on "20/20" at 10 ET

'I Knew It Wasn't Right'

Wall has documented her terrible ordeal in a new memoir called "Stolen Innocence."

In it, she described in detail growing up in the sect that she says betrayed her faith. She says her wedding was the culmination of a traumatic experience that began when church leaders removed her, her mom and sisters from their family and reassigned them to. . .

I have to applaud this your woman for telling her story. Her trial is yet to come, she will be called liar, distorter and worse.
I am amazed that the people of these cults say any one can leave anytime yet when people do leave they pray for them to be taken out.
Yet, we have defenders on FR - sad very sad.

"The husband in this case wasn’t Jeffs, but another teenager."

This rape is the practice that has drawn so much heat on the cult from Utah, Arizona, Canada, and Texas. It is this 'unique' practice that everyone defends as the "religious freedom" of the cult. Jeffs conviction in this case was not because he was the man doing the rape, that man the "husband" is scheduled for trial, it is because he was the cults leader assigning this little rape ceremony.

First of all, why are you stalking me from thread to thread with your nonsense?

Second, did I say I was ashamed of anything here? I just asked him to go ahead and say just who he was talking about. For one thing, I do NOT go “from thread to thread” and “spend the rest of the day bashing Mormons” as he states. In fact, please find ONE thread where I “bash Mormons.” And as for “spending the rest of the day” etc., I did spend a lot of time on the dailies. I do NOT spend much time now that I no longer do them. Go ahead, try to prove otherwise. You’ll be sadly disappointed.

Arranged marriages are part of major religions all over the world. Many are consumated very young. We do not imprison Saudis who bring their wives here and we do not punish Hindus who return to India for their brides, having never met them, and bring them back here. Two teenagers getting married is not in and of itself rape if it is consentual.

Jeffs was prosecuted because he was a polygamist and they couldn’t punish him for it, so they looked for a different charge.

This is FR we don't buy your multicultural cesspool We Are the World BS, this is America.

As far as you defending Jeffs for being an accomplice in this rape, how do you account for all of the other recent convictions for these "arranged" sex crimes against other FLDS men?

I don't know who "they" are but Jeffs isn't finished yet, now he is being tried in Arizona and there may be more to come from Texas.

"They" have been trying to stop this cults sick practices since the 1930s. The feds have raided them, Utah has raided them, Arizona has raided them, Texas has raided them, and Canada is considering raiding them.

They do LOTS of things in other countries that we don't allow here. Should we allow them ALL here, just because they do it in some 3rd world h*ll-hole? How about honor killings? Maybe beheadings? What the heck, let's just have a free for all: if you can find something that's done in another country, just have at it. US laws don't matter--we are the world, right?

anti Mormon Cabal members?

Well, since you like to use this term frequently, I have dubbed you with your own honored title, Sir LeGrande, our galliant ex-Mormon, self-proclaimed atheist:

You are hereby dubbed, "First Presidency and Leading General Authority, All-Seeing Seer and Ground-Level Revelator of the X.M.A.A.M. P.A.T.R.O.L." *

* X.M.A.A.M. P.A.T.R.O.L. = X-Mormon Atheists Anti-Mormon Personages Appearing To Restorationists On (the) Loose

(Wow! You get your own personal title with an "anti" word in it since you freely claim to be "against" Mormon divine "personages!")

Of course, we don't want to just bequeath upon you some mere academic, honorary title with no teeth. Therefore, FastCoyote, revelator of FReeper revelators, will make a "personage appearance unto you," and equip you with your own XMAAM PATROL peep stone! [We also suggest that you set up your own personal magic decoder peep stone codebook, possibly to be called LeGrande's Doctrine & Covenants]

With your known and highly notorious communication skills already evident, we cannot wait to read your "scriptural" equivalency revelations post-peep stone!

(Could we please have some 'attaboys! to Sir LeGrande!)

Arranged marriages are part of major religions all over the world.

So what? That's so totally irrelevant to the laws in the state of Texas.

It doesn't matter where else it's legal, how it's practiced, when it was practiced, why it was practiced, who practiced it, whether it was your grandmother, your sister, the Pope's sister, the Queen of England, whatever..... if it's against the law where you live, you are guilty of breaking the law and can be legally punished for it.

Good for Texas for upholding their laws.

Com’on LeGrande —let’s be honest here.

If the GAs in SLC had spoken out time and again about the polygamous sects that infest Utah, Arizona, Idaho and Canada, then maybe they wouldn’t exist. They have more clout that the AG of Utah —yet they are silent and they’ve allowed this to grow until it can’t be covered up any longer.

Most of the GAs have polygamous backgrounds; heck, two of the current apostles, Oaks and Nelson, have been temple sealed to their second wives —which makes them polygamous since the sealings to their first wives is not voided.

pigeons....roost....you know the rest —

“They have been given carte blanche to “hose down the pigs” and call people “buttholes” and “cabals” etc. without reprimand.”

While a church may have a local person of authority like a pastor, reverend, etc. who might discuss inappropriate name calling with a chil member of teh congregation, that the Mormons would have a “cabal” dealing with bad mouthing anyone strikes me as superb satire.

Jonathan? Jonathon Swift, is that your shade posting on FR?

[The problem is that the FLDS threads are infested with the same anti Mormon Cabal members who do attack the Mormons.]

Of course, the “hose down the pigs” threads and now the Ecumenical threads are only “infested” with the delightsome and wholesome - no cabal there!

“They regard the FLDS And the Mormons as essentially the same. “

Well, since all their doctrine come from Joseph Smith, and their books are the same, and they both can trace their lineage back through Brigham Young to Joseph Smith, only a mass spinner could conclude they are NOT “essentially the same”.

Most would call protestants and Catholics “essentially the same”, but in order to avoid logical consistency, you must ignore the essence that grey squirrels and red squirrels are - squirrels. So, FLDS and LDS have nothing in common? Hoooey, that is a stretch now isn’t it.
