.- Archbishop George H. Niederauer of San Francisco, chairman of the U.S. bishops' Communications Committee, the late Tim Russert on Tuesday for his devotion to his Catholic faith, family, work as a journalist and his work with Catholic charities.
"Russert was valued by Americans for his tremendous command of the political and electoral process and his commitment to discovering each aspect of the story that contributed to people having a better awareness of the issues of public life and candidates for political office," Archbishop Niederauer said.
"But those of us who shared his Catholic faith and his deep love for it appreciated his sharing of the story of his own faith and his loyalty to the life of the Catholic Church in this country and the many charities to which he contributed his time and talent," he said.
The archbishop also praised NBC News for asking Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the retired archbishop of Washington, to come to their studio for their staff in the hours after Russerts death.
"Tim Russert was not shy about telling people to turn to prayer and promising to pray for them in their time of need," he continued. "That the network thought of his staff and followed his example speaks well of them."
Archbishop Niederauer said that Russerts producer noted there were two things the newscaster never missed: Mass and an event for his son Luke.
"Russert in his public life was loyal to journalism. In his private life he was faithful to his family, fatherhood and faith. That's a wonderful measure of a man.
Tim Russerts burial is scheduled for Wednesday after a funeral Mass in Washington.
Apologies over the previous thread that was pulled. Did not realize AP no longer allows its stories to be posted.
The headmaster looks just like John Cleese of The Monty Rython Show.
“Monty Python”
dang typos.
I’m impressed tha Russert never missed Mass. His son has big shoes to fill.

I’d watch it, but I can’t stand any more sadness this week. My little sister is in hospice, dying of cancer. She has two, maybe three days left. I will be going to her funeral very soon.
Maria
Thank you so much. I am very sorry about your husband.
I only mentioned my sis to remind people that hundreds of FReepers have close relatives dying every day, or are mourning recent deaths.
Russert was an OK guy, but...please...the orgy over him is another excess of the press.
May he rest in peace...and soon!
I do not understand all of this weeping and wailing, if we are a Christian-Judeao society and our faith is founded on the Bible, we are to govern our lives by the Written Words of Christ, then we should be celebrating. The Bible tells us our time on earth is short and just a prep school for the life to come. So we should be happy that Tim is now removed from all worldly cares, physical problems, he is now reunited with loved ones who have proceeded him and he is happy. The Bible tells us the riches in store for us as we go to our eternal home, that we should look forward to the trip.
Psalm 131. Lord. my heart has no lofty ambitions, my eyes do not look too high. I am not concerned with great affairs, or marvels beyond my scope. Enough for me to keep my soul tranquil and quiet like a child in its mother's arms. as content as a child that has just been weaned. Israel rely on the Lord, Now and for always!
Amen.
Liberals and journalists don't get to Church often. When they get there they don't know how to behave. Since they have run out of Kennedys they appointed Tim for the ceremonial role.
He was a good man but maybe something else is going on. Maria Shriver hit it when she recalled Russert warning her there were very few Catholics in the NBC building. I was half wondering for a while there if they would have Darby O'Gill and the Little People join in on "Born to Run" and "Thunder Road."
Rest assured of my prayers for you, your sister and your family. Remember to stay by her bedside and pray the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy. Our Lord promised that:
January 28, 1938. Today the Lord said to me, My daughter, write down these words: All those souls who will glorify My mercy and spread its worship, encouraging others to trust in My mercy, will not experience terror at the hour of death. My mercy will shield them in that final battle...(1540) Write that when they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the merciful Saviour. (1541)
May God's blessing be upon you both, even if, for a time it, is hard to realize it.

Was Russert pro-life? Anyone know?
That’s what I’m wondering because if it wasn’t then I have a hard time taking his “faith” seriously.
Even people of faith lament the loss of loved ones on this earth. The idea that being happy they are in heaven means you will not miss them here is simply wrong.
1) His work and apologetics for pro-infanticide politicians
2) His disrespect to Father Fessio on the 24 April 2005 edition of Meet The Press
Even if you got away with the first two...
Erin Go Bragh Hah!
He was a Dem. Maybe not a ravingly offensive one, and perhaps his pro-abortion position was not the most important thing in his life, but it was there. However, the fault lies with the priests and bishops who condoned his pro-abortion stance. If he was all that great, and they had said something to him, maybe he would have changed. But they didn’t.
I agree entirely!
“Id watch it, but I cant stand any more sadness this week. My little sister is in hospice, dying of cancer. She has two, maybe three days left. I will be going to her funeral very soon.”
That’s so very sad, Palladin. My heart goes out to you. Cherish these few days with your little sister, and then let fond memories do the rest after she passes. I feel bad for you and wish you well.
“He was a Dem. Maybe not a ravingly offensive one, and perhaps his pro-abortion position was not the most important thing in his life, but it was there.”
He may very well personally have been anti-abortion. Being surrounded by total leftists like Chris Matthews and Keith Obermann, he probably kept his mouth shut about his beliefs with regard to abortion, but he was very pro-family, and his best buddy, Mike Barnacle, also Irish Catholic, had a pile of kids himself. Six or so, I believe. So Tim’s best friendship was with a man who like himself believed in family and children. These guys were like the Kennedy family, personally pro-family, publically, toeing the Dem Party line. You can indeed say it is hypocritical, but I don’t believe you can speak to whether Tim personally believed in abortion or not.
Do you know the Kennedy family personally?
Catholic bump.
Prayers for your sister.
Supposedly carried his Rosary around in his poclet all the time.
((((Hugs))))
Well I had little to say about Tim but you said about 2 things for me.He controlled the American press in some areas and has little to show for the unborn.I saw his passion for the play but the unborn was not part of it or he would have spoke out more.

That’s great...but was he pro-life?
As much as I love and respect the powerful prayers of the Rosary, I know they aren’t doing much if the man saying them is 58 and not pro-life.
I never believed Bob Casey was really pro-life. I don’t believe his sons are pro-life. I have yet to see any evidence Russert was pro-life. You can call yourself a Catholic all you want, but if you don’t oppose the killing of babies you’re NOT REALLY MUCH OF A CATHOLIC no matter what else you do or say. To me, a man calling himself a pro-life Democrat is like calling himself a pro-Jew Nazi. It makes no sense. It makes no more sense than saying you’re a pro-choice Catholic.
“These guys were like the Kennedy family, personally pro-family”
“Do you know the Kennedy family personally?”
The Kennedy’s being pro-family in the Catholic sense by having oompty-nine children each. So they practice pro-life, while claiming politically that they are pro-choice. As I said, hypocritical yes, however, the way they live their personal lives are very different from the political stance they take. Same with Russert and Barnacle.
I have many people who have passes away that I miss, every day, but that does not mean I cannot be happy to think of them all together in Heaven.

When did I ever say you couldn’t be happy your friend was in heaven? I said people often miss their friends HERE. The two (sadness at losing a friend) and happiness (knowing your friend is in heaven) are not mutually exclusive. I know I have experienced both feelings. Do you not feel any sense of loss when a friend or family member dies?
Read your Bible and remember that Jesus cried at the passing of Lazarus whom He would raise from the dead! (John 11:35). If the Son of God can cry over a dear friend He knew He was soon going to raise from the dead, then I don’t see why I can’t shed tears over loved ones I won’t see for decades and decades.

“Your talking about Bob Casey JR.Right?Russert life for pro life will stand for itself, nothing.I was asked to be out there.Big pay or the Truth.Big money if you keep your mouth shut.”
Yes, I was talking about both Caseys - the father who was governor in the 1980s and 90s and the son who is making a name for himself now. I think both of them are phony pro-lifers. I just don’t believe you can be a true pro-lifer in a pro-abortion party. Again, to me it’s like being a pro-Jew Nazi. It just ain’t gonna’ work!
RIP Tim and thanks for the memories.
Thanks!
Answer the question.
I don’t know whether he did or not, and I am just going by what people said here - and the fact that he was a fervent Dem. And exactly what is so “pro-family” about the Kennedys? Heck, even their non-political family life is awful - remember the Good Friday where Ted Kennedy and other family members celebrated the day with a drunken binge that landed one of them in court on rape charges? Pretty peculiar family values.
It’s up to God to decide on Tim Russert, not me. I simply object to his instant media canonization.
Thank you all so much for your prayers for my sister. You all helped me and her children to pray her right into Heaven. She died this evening at 6:30 p.m., in great peace, surrounded by her three children, and holding her granddaughter’s hand.
She lived a beautiful life in her 69 years here on earth. She was deeply devoted to the Lord and to the Church. A very spiritual woman, she was always sending me books like “The Imitation of Christ.” She loved Pope John Paul II, and read all his books and encyclicals. She was always an inspiration to me, and to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
All your messages were very consoling.
May God reward all of you for your great compassion.
While much of what you said is true, real, live people are going to miss him. Jesus wept over Lazarus and then he entered the tomb raised again to life.
I am very sorry to hear this FRiend.((((Hugs)))) Fatima
How about his parents?:
Celebrant:
God is the giver of all life, human and divine. May he bless the fathers of these children. With their wives they will be the first teachers of their children in the ways of faith. May they be also the best of teachers, bearing witness to the faith by what they say and do, in Christ Jesus our Lord.
