A Machesney Park minister faces additional counts of sexual assault charges. Jonathon Christopher Powell, 40, was arrested last week after accusations he sexually abused an underage girl. The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department said there could be a second victim.
Now, Powell's been charged in that case too. He now faces two more counts of Criminal Sexual Abuse, for a total of four counts in the two cases. Powell is still in jail, with no bond.
Detectives tell us Powell was a minister at New Hope Baptist Church in Machesney Park. 13 News has tried contacting the church and has not heard back.
Clearly a MINO.
There must be something about dancing on the fence between heaven and hell that excites these guys.
Good grief. Why was he allowed to resume pastoral duties?
We had a dirtbag pastor like that about 25 years ago. We never found out what he was doing until years after he left. He essentially got away with it. He paid but not like he should have. I’m sure it’s too late to do anything now except stir stuff up. The girl doesn’t want to do that so that’s the way it will stay, we surmise.
This reminds us that we are all sinners saved by grace.
It is a good thing that it is not our sin that condemns us, but the blood of Christ that saves us.
So as awful as this is, God has forgiven this at the cross if the man is saved.
He will suffer the embarrassment, pain and punishment that men can apply as well he should, but we need to remember we have a God of grace and mercy .
