Priest gets fruit basket with fetus in cheese spread bottle
ABS CBN ^ | July 7, 2008

A man of the cloth and his family got the shock of their lives Monday morning after finding a four-month-old fetus hidden in a basket of fruits.

Monsignor Gerry Santos had just celebrated Mass at the Quiapo Church in Manila around 9 a.m. when he received a basket of fruits from an unknown donor.

"After the mass, pinauwi sa akin ng mother butler. I brought the fruits to my parents' home because it was our regular lunch and my parents' house helper showed it to me. It was inside a bottle of Cheez Wiz. Maybe it's four months old," Santos said in an interview Monday over the Church-run radio station, Radyo Veritas.

Santos said the aborted baby's hand and feet were already formed. He said a rosary was also placed inside the cheese spread bottle, which was hidden in a pile of apple and bananas.

He said his family wasn’t able to continue eating lunch after the shocking discovery. His parents were "very disturbed" and "traumatized" by the experience.

After recovering from the trauma, the prelate said his family immediately brought back the fetus to Quiapo Church, "and then I blessed the aborted fetus."

The fetus was then brought to the La Loma cemetery where it was provided a proper burial.

Humanae Vitae

The unwelcome delivery came as the Church celebrates the 40th anniversary of Humanae Vitae, a Latin word that means "of human life."

Humanae Vitae is a document written by Pope Paul VI, which was promulgated on July 25, 1968. It was titled "On the Regulation of Birth," which affirms the Catholic Church's teachings on abortion, contraception and other issues about human life.

Santos said abortion or killing an unborn baby is "really an abominable crime." "No one has the right to take away the life of another person," he said.

The prelate said a person's life begins "from the moment of conception." He said a mother should be the first to defend her unborn baby since her womb is the "sanctuary of life."

He said the shocking incident shows that the Church needs to highlight its pro-life stand. He said the Church should have an undying campaign to educate people, especially women, about the importance of life.

"We have to proclaim life. We serve life and we have to celebrate life," Santos said.

Benedict XVI could do a great service to the world simply by repromulgating Humanae Vitae ex cathedra.

“A man of the cloth...”

and

“After the mass, pinauwi sa akin ng mother butler...”

What are these?

"Man of the cloth" is a trifle archaic, but it's a well known synonym for priest.

The other is an artifact from the translation of this article from Tagalog/Filipino.

Pretty ambiguous message. Is it a plea -

This horror is happening every day, please stop it.

or a taunt

This is going on every day and you can't stop it.

Good point. Although Pope John Paul II invoked the full power of his teaching office in declaring that women can never be priests, yet the "debate" regarding female priests rages on. Cafeteria Catholics believe that the Church should be a democracy, so the invocation of papal infallibility has little effect on them.

Ya think the perverted conspirators behind this disagree with the Catholic Church's stand on abortion?

I bet nothing will be done-no investigation or governmental involvement at all...

Any chance the Msgr. has been less than adamantly pro-life?

Never mind. I didn’t read to the end of the article. It’s clear the Msgr. is very much pro-life.

I found this also:

“Human life is precious from the moment of conception. The mother’s womb is the sanctuary of life and the mother should defend the life of her child. We have to strengthen the teachings on the value of life and it should start in our parishes, our homes, schools and the whole Filipino community,” he said.

Santos urged women dealing with an unwanted pregnancy not to go to abortion clinics. “Give me the child. There are several convents and parishes who are willing to adopt their babies. Instead of abortion, (it should be) adoption,” he said.

I don’t see any reason to assume that this fetus had been medically aborted. More likely a miscarriage (though at this late stage, the correct medical term is “spontaneous abortion”). The whole thing is mighty odd, but the rosary in the jar suggests a religious motive. Maybe the mother couldn’t afford a burial, and thought this scheme up as a way to get a Catholic burial instead of having the fetus discarded as “medical waste”. Definitely not thinking clearly, but I don’t see reason to think a medical abortion is more likely than a natural miscarriage.

But she could afford a fruit basket and a jar of American Cheese Whiz?

That shows you how perverted and sick the left is. They did this with one purpose in mind: to harass the priest, a representative of the Catholic Church which opposes everything that the left stands for.

We don’t know anything about the fruit or the basket, and an empty Cheese Whiz jar can be had out of the trash. Burial plots, caskets and embalmers aren’t cheap, and cremation (also still a significant amount of moeny for someone really poor) used to be prohibited by the Catholic Church and is still subject to confusing restrictions.

Money may have been part of the problem here, but fear of discovery that the pregnancy had ever happened could also account for this odd incident. A woman, particularly a young teenager, might have been secretly pregnant and fearful of reactions from family and others. If she miscarried, she’d then want to dispose of the fetus in a way that would keep her secret, while still ensuring a respectful burial. If that’s what she was after, her plan worked.

I'll take a long shot: A very mentally disturbed Catholic feeling guilty about having had an abortion. Could be a deranged method of atonement. Packing the rosary with the baby suggests this.

It could also be sick performance art. The way these "artists" have been going this is right on track, although that would be more likely in America.

In either case, someone needs to be a guest in a free hotel with padded rooms for a while. I'm sure the priest would be willing to help with the counseling despite what was done to him and his family.

So let’s hear your best guess as to how and why a 4 month fetus ended up in a jar with a rosary tucked in with it, hidden in a basket of fruit left at a Catholic Church.

Scared, confused teenagers don’t think clearly and do some weird things. Seems to me that’s as likely an explanation as any, given the available information. And it’s more likely to have been a natural miscarriage than an induced abortion, since elective abortion is illegal in the Philippines and illegal practitioners are unlikely to hand over the evidence to their client.

And no where in that article does it state that there was NO Cheese Whiz in the jar.

This looks pretty intentional to me.

If a miscarriage took place and the mother truly loved the child, she would have lovingly wrapped the baby up and taken it to the local parish. They would have buried the child. I know people who have relatives in the Philippines. It is a very kind and Catholic place.

You are using American burial procedures and equating them to there. Until there is a reference that the laws are the same, I'm going to go with the idea that burials, as in most poor countries, are just a hole, a box and some dirt.

I was wondering whether it was just a miscarriage, but the article seemed so adamant that it was an abortion.

No one thought maybe this “gift” came from a girl who has been used and refused by this “Man of the cloth”
Whomever did this thing may have been very angry at the priest... and had a “YOU deal with it now!!” sort of attitude..
If his parents have (domestics) living with them perhaps he did as well.. The story doesn’t, as usual, give enough details to form an educated opinion.
Bitterness and anger could cause a young girl to act in this manner.
