BERLIN - More than 1,600 years after it was written in Greek, one of the oldest copies of the Bible will become globally accessible online for the first time this week.

From Thursday, sections of the Codex Sinaiticus, which contains the oldest complete New Testament, will be available on the Internet, said the University of Leipzig, one of the four curators of the ancient text worldwide.

High resolution images of the Gospel of Mark, several Old Testament books, and notes on the work made over centuries will appear on www.codex-sinaiticus.net as a first step towards publishing the entire manuscript online by next July.

Very cool. The internet has a lot of downsides but boy can some wonderful things be done with it too.

Great news.

In this day and age it’s a shame that more of ‘untouchable’ books aren’t yet available.

Hmmmm, the article didn’t give much credit to St. Catherine’s monastery in the Sinai from which it was removed. This Orthodox monastery is one of the oldest extant monasteries in the world and gave hospitality to Mohammed in his journeys accross North Africa. For this reason it was spared by the Mohammandians in their predation through the centuries.

But I think Mohammed did ask that an area in that monastery be set aside for a mosque on the monastery grounds. It is still there to this day.

More than 1,600 years after it was written in Greek, ...

Wrong right out of the gate. "It" was written 1,900+ years ago by eyewitnesses or those who had access to eyewitnesses. What we have is a "copy" which dates from the 4th century anno domini.

They're not wrong. Try quoting the entire sentence.

Hershel Shanks published an article last year explaining how this manuscript was stolen. (Who Owns the Codex Sinaiticus? How the monks at Mt. Sinai got conned)

I understand what the 1st paragraph is so awkwardly trying to say. There is something fundamentally amiss with the logic of the first sentence. To avoid the silliness this sentence allows, it must be rewritten. Try: "More than 1600 years after it was created, one of the oldest copies of the Bible [hand]written entirely in Greek will become globally ..."; or, "More than 1600 years after it was origially transcribed, ..."

Of course the Bible was "written" in a variety of languages. This uncial manuscript is handwritten entirely in Greek, because it contains (or used to) a copy of the Septuagent (a Greek translation of the Hebrew OT). This is not mentioned in the article either.

There. Out of my system.
