Face of the New Atheism (Nat. Cath. Register Interview of P.Z. Myers) (Catholic Caucus)
National Catholic Register ^ | 8/5/2008 | Jeff Gardner

I never expected to become the one Catholic journalist to be granted an interview with Paul Zachary (PZ) Myers....

“Professor Myers, there is a palpable level of hatred towards religion on your blog,” I told him. “What’s the source?”

“Oh, it’s not hatred,” he said. “It’s contempt.” So began my conversation with PZ Myers....

...“I was brought up as a casual Lutheran and left the church when I was 14,” he said....

That Myers has the equivalent of a junior high school education in religion is glaring. He understands little about the history and function of the Catholic Church and even less about the place of the Eucharist in the lives of Catholics. When I told him that many have laid their lives on the line to protect the Blessed Sacrament, he recoiled in disbelief, saying, “Really? People really do that!?”

This premeditated ignorance toward religion doesn’t seem to bother Myers, however....

...I asked Myers, “You have... described Catholics as stupid, stupider, scary, dark age fanatics” and words that we can’t print. This language doesn’t strike you as bigoted?”

“Why should it?” he replied. “I am making honest characterizations of individual people.”

“But in desecrating the Eucharist,” I continued, “you have insulted and hurt thousands of Catholics. What do you have to say for that?”

Myers’ answer was true to form: “The whole silly part of this whole episode is that I’ve got so many people writing me and saying that I have seriously hurt them. But what have I done? I have thrown away a cracker.”

Father Loya also pointed out that in desecrating the Eucharist, Myers’ real target might be the Church — “like a little girl trying to hurt another little girl by pulling the head off her doll.”

Folks who don’t think the Body and Blood are anything special wouldn’t bother with this kind of infantile garbage.

&&
This guy is clearly a satanist and so knows quite well the power of the Eucharist.

Chesterton once said "if there was no God, there would be no atheists."

He could have been talking about Myers.

For this man to be consumed with such hatred, he must have been hurt horribly sometime, somewhere.

I suspect that of the Dawkins/Hitchens crowd.

Me, too. How these ostensibly intelligent men of science can seriously subscribe to an idea as blatantly ridiculous as materialism (”If I can’t poke it with a stick, it doesn’t exist”) has always baffled me. Even when I myself was an agnostic, I knew deep in my heart that life was more than just an otiose accident.

I pity this poor man. How he must hurt.

I now that these professors specialize but it is sad that there is someone so ignorant teaching others. He is less than narrow-minded, his mind is closed, I pray that God will give him grace.

My theory is that the man is possessed. Go to his blog and post the St. Michael prayer.

This is akin to believing that Movie Stars are capable of speaking out responsibly on such subjects as Global Warming and Nuclear Winter because they have made $millions playing scientists in science fiction movies.

Or that I ought to be a brilliant mathematician becaause I am brilliant in English and Languages Generally.

As my SAT scores demonstrate (725 in English, 341 in Math) it is possible to be brilliant in one field and stupid in another.
