This would be the church that got in some difficulty over their refusal to register as 401c3, some years back, IIRC.

No, Indianapolis Baptist Temple (IBT) voted to rescind its 501c3 status around 1983. It was not a “refusal” because churches are not required by law to either apply for or maintain 501c3 (or any other) status with the IRS. IBT is thriving today without such registration.

The Federal government does not accuse the church of illegality for electing not to have any “contract” with the IRS. It is a matter of choice by that congregation, as it is with probably thousands of local churches nationwide. There are at least two large fellowships of such churches.
