Cardinal Egan Blasts Pelosi (in brilliantly scathing response) [Open]

Wow! This is a brilliantly scathing response to Nancy Pelosi and her comments on Meet The Press Sunday concerning abortion. Here's the amazing statement in full.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 26, 2008

STATEMENT OF HIS EMINENCE, EDWARD CARDINAL EGAN CONCERNING REMARKS MADE BY THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Like many other citizens of this nation, I was shocked to learn that the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America would make the kind of statements that were made to Mr. Tom Brokaw of NBC-TV on Sunday, August 24, 2008. What the Speaker had to say about theologians and their positions regarding abortion was not only misinformed; it was also, and especially, utterly incredible in this day and age.

We are blessed in the 21st century with crystal-clear photographs and action films of the living realities within their pregnant mothers. No one with the slightest measure of integrity or honor could fail to know what these marvelous beings manifestly, clearly, and obviously are, as they smile and wave into the world outside the womb. In simplest terms, they are human beings with an inalienable right to live, a right that the Speaker of the House of Representatives is bound to defend at all costs for the most basic of ethical reasons. They are not parts of their mothers, and what they are depends not at all upon the opinions of theologians of any faith. Anyone who dares to defend that they may be legitimately killed because another human being “chooses” to do so or for any other equally ridiculous reason should not be providing leadership in a civilized democracy worthy of the name.

Edward Cardinal Egan

Archbishop of New York

Catholic bishops are usually careful, especially when it comes to written statements, more especially when it comes to matters of politics so as to be seen above the fray. They tend to issue general opinions, and to single out Pelosi or anyone is uncommon. Yet the egregiousness of the Speaker’s comments was too much to ignore, and he definitely schooled her on this. Good job, Cardinal Egan!

Excellent, Cardinal Egan!

I wish that Archbishop Wuerl (part-time Catholic, full-time Democrat) had made a statement half as strong!

Puts Wuerhl’s reply to shame.

“No one with the slightest measure of integrity or honor....”

When you assume that she possesses integrity OR honor to any degree, I belive you assume far to much.

Methinks somebody crossed an invisible line drawn in the nave.

Yup. She should have gone with the old "personally opposed but..." statement instead of flat out lying about the Church's stand.

The first they could let slide, the second they can't.

I have a feeling she simply shows up at Mass, receives the sacraments...

The San Francisco Arch Diocese has been co-opted by Marxists and homosexuals. She will hear very little criticism of 'abortion rights' in her church.

Simply put, someone who receives the Eucharist while not in a state of sanctifying grace (i.e. supporting and promoting the murder of the unborn) brings a judgement, a curse of death, upon their soul, they are committing sacrilige, and profaning the Eucharist.

Unbelievable.

When you read this statement it becomes eminently clear why Christ chose the flawed, weak Peter to be the Rock upon which His Church would be built -- even though John was the apostle who was closest to Christ and whose faith never wavered even unto Calvary.

Sometimes a guy who impulsively grabs a sword and cuts off the ear of the high priest's servant is exactly what the world needs.

“My God, my God, she is so stupid. Hard to imagine she is speaker of the House.”

Doesn’t this tell you something about the dismal political condition our country finds itself?

This Missouri Synod Lutheran is beaming with pride and appreciation of fellow Christian, Cardinal Egan.

His statement is in the spirit of "Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen."

They all know it.

It’s the ultimate reason abortion supporters are so shril whenever anyone questions them. The guilt is inside their hearts and won’t go away no matter how shrill their various arguments are.

Dear Constitutions Grandchild,

“I have a feeling she simply shows up at Mass, receives the sacraments and, occasionally, hears someone tell her what is in the Bible and how she should believe it.”

By showing up for Mass each Sunday, Ms. Pelosi hears four readings from the Bible. She first hears a reading read directly from the Old Testament. Then she participates in singing (or reciting) a Psalm. Then she hears a direct reading from one of the Epistles. Finally, she hears a direct reading from one of the four Gospels.

The problem isn't that she isn't hearing the Word of God. It's just that she seems to be immune to its effect.
