Man in frenzied attack on priest after watching The Da Vinci Code (Ecumenical)
The Times (UK) ^ | 9/24/2008 | Richard Owen

A Rome priest is fighting for his life after being stabbed in the neck and stomach by a deranged man who had just watched the film The Da Vinci Code...

Eyewitnesses said that Marco Luzi, 25, asked to see Father Canio Canistri, 68, parish priest at the church of Santa Marcella in the San Saba district on the Aventine Hill, and then attacked him with a knife hidden in a cloth. An elderly parishioner who came to the priest's aid is also in serious condition.

A Peruvian childminder and a policeman were also injured as the assailant fled through a nearby park. Police said Mr Luzi, a former medical student with a history of psychiatric problems, had admitted watching the film version of Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code on television the night before the frenzied assault....

Neighbours said that Mr Luzi was "a loner, a solitary introvert who sometimes quarrelled violently with his mother". Doctors said Father Canistri was in intensive care, while the pensioner who went to his aid at the church, Antonio Farrace, 78, a retired policeman, was also "in serious condition".

The Peruvian nanny, Rosemary Sotero Rivera, 37, was attacked by Luzi as he ran through a park after fleeing from the church. Witnesses said she threw herself on the three year old girl in her charge to protect her, and was stabbed in the shoulder.

Mr Luzi was then chased by two policemen on motorcycles who... tackled him. "We couldn't fire our weapons, there were too many bystanders" said Luca Gori, 41, one of the police officers, who was lightly wounded in the stomach during the struggle with Luzi...

Parishioners... said Father Canistri... had repeatedly expressed concern over breaks ins and thefts at the church, and had asked his congregation to be "vigilant"....

I’ll never understand how these people can get their panties in such a twist over a movie.

Quite a stretch to imply cause and effect.

on television the night before

What else did he watch? Dancing with the stars?

People have used the 'media' excuse in the past for evil behavior. But a book (or movie, or video game) can't make someone do something. Man is just a sinful creature.

Hmm...Dancing with the Stars made me slightly ill...does that count?

Prayers up for the Father’s full recovery, it is a sick and fallen world we live in.

Hatred of Christ’s Church is extensive and takes many forms, some violent and others express their hatred in words and actions.

Vigilance my friends in Christ.

The writings of Hitler, Marx, Mohammed, and the author(s) of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion could be said to have driven some people to do some rotten things.

The Da Vinci Code has been twisted by a number of people to allege a similar “world global conspiracy” about the Catholic Church.

The DVC IS twisted. No misinterpretation necessary. Its sole purpose (apart from making money from suckers) is to propagate outrageous lies.

The DVC didn’t lead to this violence. The perp’s own mental instability did.

You do realize that tens of millions have read the book and/or watched the movie and somehow refrained from stabbing a priest or thinking of it as anything but escapist fiction?

Well if he had watched dancing with the stars he may have been more inclined to do the Mamba or Fox Trot with the Father.

We enjoy DWStars as good clean entertainment however a bit dissappointed with the line up this go around.

Cloris Leachman seems to be hormonally reliving her youth and I was pleased as punch the Kardashian sister got bumped off.

How 7degree Kevin Bacon can one get with her charactorless rich and oversexed family.

Her Dad (God rest his soul) Defends OJ and Christy Jenner was Nicoles best friend and now Bruce Jenner is married to Kardashians widow who does a vial filled reality show with her 3 spoiled rich wanna be “Hollywood” daughters.

Like watching a 25 cents peep show. /complain mode.

...and, the sequel is in production.

Yes, I do. So what?

I said the book is twisted trash. Do you have a problem with that?

Would you find it OK if people read a lying, obscene book about the United States or about your mother, and said “relax; it’s escapist fiction”?

You do realise that tens of millions of people are too ignorant and too stupid to distinguish where fact ends and fiction begins?

The movie’s not THAT bad. I mean it’s bad, but not stab somebody in the neck bad... unless you happen across Dan Brown.

I agree with you. I wouldn’t blame the DVC, or any book or movie, for the actions of a mentally deranged person. Anything might have set this guy off. The real tragedy here is that in today’s “tolerant” society, you can’t force people who have serious mental illnesses to undergo treatment and you can’t lock them up or get them off the streets unless they hurt themselves or others. I guess the authorities thought it was better for this nut, who thinks he is the anti-Christ, to run around free than to infringe on his “rights” and either put him in an institution or force him to take medication to treat his condition. Frankly, I don’t understand this kind of false compassion. Someone who suffers from an untreated mental illness is controlled by his illness and the exercise of his free will is impaired by that illness. Moreover, these sorts of incidents, when mentally ill persons hurt or kill others, are becoming increasingly common and show that mentally ill persons are not necessarily “harmless” and may, in fact, deserve some of the stigma that has traditionally been attached to mental illness.

I hope this priest and the parishioner who tried to help him make a complete recovery and I hope their attacker is locked away for a long time to come.

You do realize that tens of millions of suckers read that garbage and believe it is true? You also no doubt know that even though the book is supposed to be fiction, that snakeoil salesman Brown claims that it is all true?

Brown, of course, does NOT claim it’s all true. He might fudge around things, but he’s just trying to make a buck. I can’t even begin to list the number of folks who do the same to cash in. I wish I could have done the same.

You are so right. As I said a prayer for the priest and the other 2 injured people, I asked God to protect our Church from the many evil attacks that are occurring — here and in other places — both subtle and overt.

We watched parts of Dancing last night and the night before. I love to dance, and my husband does not, yet he is the one who must see it (hmmm...could it have anything to do with the skimpy outfits on the shapely women?) Anyway, it seems that, in our 3 seasons of watching, the women’s costumes are getting even skimpier and the dancing is even more suggestive. I am glad I don’t have children watching.

Yeah your right the outfits (what there is of them) are getting very provocative.

They even asked on another program that Kardashians Mom is a host of if they every have wardrode malfunctions.

One gal said her bottom (not that she has much of one) fell out of her get up but no one could tell because the feathers hanging down as the skirt part kept her covered up.

I like dancing with the stars in this day and age nice to have enjoyable entertianment that is clean fun.

Like the old musicals from the 40s.
