The 12th European temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be built in Rome.
-SNIP-
The Rome Italy Temple will be the first to be constructed near the worldwide headquarters for the Roman Catholic Church. It will serve church members from a variety of countries and greatly reduce travel time and expense to the Latter-day Saints living in the area, the release states.
President Monson said the church also plans to build temples in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Cordoba, Argentina; the greater Kansas City area; and in Philadelphia. The announcement of the temple in Rome brought an audible gasp and smiles to more than 20,000 church members assembled in the Conference Center.
Reaction was emotional. Italy Rome Mission President Jeffrey Acerson, who has been in Rome sine July 2007, was moved by the news. "The Saints in Italy have waited a long time," Acerson said, his voice cracking. "We 're excited, we're anxious and we're very humbled by the decision of a prophet of the Lord to move forward with a temple in Rome."
When he heard the news, Acerson said at first he wanted to react like Italian soccer fans, who take to the streets when their teams win.
"I felt like all the Saints here in Italy wanted to go into the streets to let everyone know a temple is coming," he said.
The LDS Church has more than 22,000 members in Italy, where preaching first began in 1850 by then-Elder Lorenzo Snow, who later became president of the church. (More at Link)

Interesting question, to be sure. My guess is that talks for this particular Temple have been ongoing for quite awhile and that all is fine or, at the very least, acceptable. I bet that, barring a few sporadic protests (if that), it’s going to be fine.
Being neither Catholic or Mormon, I can only congratulate the Mormons on their continued growth.
Ping!
I never heard of the Vatican being referred to as a “headquarters” before.
Well, we have a very nice Cathedral just a few blocks from the worldwide headquarters of the LDS church, don't we? :-)
Do you suppose there is another “headquarters”? My assumption was they were talking about the Vatican, but I’m not Catholic.
I hope they will build nice looking temples. I grew up in the Washington DC area when they were building the temple there, and always appreciated its great beauty. It’s a beautiful addition to the landscape for Mormons and non-Mormons alike. Unfortunately, most of the the temples built in the last couple of decades have been hideous box-like structures. The Manhattan temple is just an ugly old office-type building that’s had its upper floors converted into a “temple”, with the only exterior change being the addition of an ugly boxy “steeple”. I’m sure it’s functional for those who believe in the ordinances performed there, but it’s not very inspiring for anyone.

When you see the Albuquerque temple from the side, the steeple is so high in proportion to the rest of it, it looks like it’s about to topple over. There isn’t much in the way of archetectural beauty to it.
Considering that the majority of Italians are essentially 100% secular (i.e., the only times they step foot in a church are baptisms, weddings, and funerals), I think the reaction will be a *yawn*
At least that's my reaction.
the one in San Diego is very sinister -— like an alabaster scowling grasshopper ....

I’m not Roman, but I am Catholic, and I take this news much like the news that a huge mosque was to be built in Rome (already done now) - all roads lead to Rome.
I did read that the Mormon church is selling its precious mall land in SLC so a Catholic Church could be built there....all they had to do was ask the Mormons and wallaa....it was granted.....
that one was designed by the Catholic architects.
Uh...

It's nice to see the mormons have changed their minds about the Catholic Church since the early leaders were calling it this:
"Mormonism views the Catholic Church as the "Great and Abominable Church." "It is also to the Book of Mormon to which we turn for the plainest description of the Catholic Church as the great and abominable church. Nephi saw this 'church which is the most abominable above all other churches' in vision. He 'saw the devil that he was the foundation of it' and also the murders, wealth, harlotry, persecutions, and evil desires that historically have been a part of this satanic organization. (1 Nephi 13:1-10)" -
Mormon Doctrine, p. 130 (1958)"
I've seen it from the interstate. Big, white, shiny like a whited sepulchre. It appears to look bigger because of the excess ornamental spires on it.
***Im not Roman, but I am Catholic, and I take this news much like the news that a huge mosque was to be built in Rome (already done now) - all roads lead to Rome.***
If I remember my history, didn’t the Arians demand places of worship in Italy and were rebuffed by one of the church fathers?
And didn’t Mussolini say no mosques would be built in Rome unless a Catholic church was built in Mecca?
You wrote:

I don’t know about that, but I know the Arians seized parishes in North Africa using violent means to throw out the Catholics.
“And didnt Mussolini say no mosques would be built in Rome unless a Catholic church was built in Mecca?”
Don’t know, but Mussolini was never a Church official (thank goodness!).

BTW, did you see my other post about the mormons that defrauded Lehman Bros of $50 AND had two wives? I thought that mainstream mormons had disavowed polygamy...at least until after they died and were allowed into the celestial kingdom?
Mastermind in one of California's largest real estate scams gets 14 years
From a link I posted (just two, BTW) "With authorities closing in, there was time for one last spree--in Las Vegas. Along for the jaunt was Shawna Fitzgerald, who later explained to the court that she, too, was married to Charles Fitzgerald and that the couple have a young son. Shawna claimed that she lived with Charles during the week in Hesperia, Calif. and that Meya was his "weekend wife."
From another story: "By all appearances, Charles Elliott Fitzgerald, known as Elliott, seemed to be the straight shooter and a family man. He tipped waiters well, rarely drank and regularly attended the Mormon Church, sources said.
"I am completely shocked," said Ernest Ross, general manager of Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in Beverly Hills, where Fitzgerald frequently dined and was known to drop a 300 percent tip. "We all thought this guy was a really nice guy."
Many of Fitzgerald's alleged business partners came through his connections with the Mormon Church. Fitzgerald, his wife and five kids regularly attended temples in Westwood and Newbury Park, said James Jacobson, a public affairs official with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Los Angeles.
John Gregory Van Orman, who was the bishop of the Mormon Church in Newbury Park until about two years ago, also worked as a contractor for Fitzgerald and is one of dozens of defendants added by Lehman Bros. to its suit, according to court papers.
Enjoy!
That was 50 MILLION dollars, not $50.

You seem to have forgotten to give the rest of the information about the reference you gave.
After Bruce R. Maconacy wrote the 1958 copy of his book “Mormon Doctrine”, he was called on the carpet about that. That was back in the 50’s to correct the mistake and it was corrected in later additions.
How was it corrected, Fred? Was Mcconkie's statement just erased?
Have they corrected Orson Pratt's statements the same way, just pretend they never existed?
"Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the whore of Babylon' whom the Lord denounces by the mouth of John the Revelator as having corrupted all the earth by their fornications and wickedness. Any person who shall be so corrupt as to receive a holy ordinance of the Gospel from the ministers of any of these apostate churches will be sent down to hell with them, unless they repent."
- Apostle Orson Pratt, The Seer, p. 255
Pratt had a LOT to say about the Christian church, and in this statement "This class of men, calling themselves Christian, uniting with the various forms of the pagan religion, adopting many of their ceremonies and institutions, became very popular, and finally some of the pagans embraced Christianity and were placed, as it were, upon the throne, and what they termed Christianity became very popular indeed. How long has this order of things existed, this dreadful apostacy, this class of people that pronounced themselves Zion, or Christians, without any of the characteristics of Zion? It has existed for some sixteen or seventeen centuries. It has spread itself and grown and gone into the four quarters of the earth. It is the great ecclesiastical power that is spoken of by the revelator John, and called by him the most corrupt and most wicked of all the powers of the earth, under the name of spiritual Babylon, or in other words Babel, which signifies confusion. This great and corrupt power is also represented by John as presenting a golden cup to the nations, full of all manner of filthiness and abominations.
- Apostle Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, v. 14, p. 346, who do you suppose Pratt was talking about as a "great and corrupt power"?

THE FIRST BOOK OF NEPHI
HIS REIGN AND MINISTRY CHAPTER 14
An angel tells Nephi of the blessings and cursings to fall upon the GentilesThere are only two churches: the Church of the Lamb of God and the church of the devilThe saints of God in all nations are persecuted by the great and abominable churchThe apostle John shall write concerning the end of the world. Between 600 and 592 B.C.
1 And it shall come to pass, that if the Gentiles shall hearken unto the Lamb of God in that day that he shall manifest himself unto them in word, and also in power, in very deed, unto the taking away of their stumbling blocks 2 And harden not their hearts against the Lamb of God, they shall be numbered among the seed of thy father; yea, they shall be numbered among the house of Israel; and they shall be a blessed people upon the promised land forever; they shall be no more brought down into captivity; and the house of Israel shall no more be confounded. 3 And that great pit, which hath been digged for them by that great and abominable church, which was founded by the devil and his children, that he might lead away the souls of men down to hellyea, that great pit which hath been digged for the destruction of men shall be filled by those who digged it, unto their utter destruction, saith the Lamb of God; not the destruction of the soul, save it be the casting of it into that hell which hath no end. 4 For behold, this is according to the captivity of the devil, and also according to the justice of God, upon all those who will work wickedness and abomination before him. 5 And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, Nephi, saying: Thou hast beheld that if the Gentiles repent it shall be well with them; and thou also knowest concerning the covenants of the Lord unto the house of Israel; and thou also hast heard that whoso repented not must perish. 6 Therefore, woe be unto the Gentiles if it so be that they harden their hearts against the Lamb of God. 7 For the time cometh, saith the Lamb of God, that I will work a great and a marvelous work among the children of men; a work which shall be everlasting, either on the one hand or on the othereither to the convincing of them unto peace and life eternal, or unto the deliverance of them to the hardness of their hearts and the blindness of their minds unto their being brought down into captivity, and also into destruction, both temporally and spiritually, according to the captivity of the devil, of which I have spoken. 8 And it came to pass that when the angel had spoken these words, he said unto me: Rememberest thou the covenants of the Father unto the house of Israel? I said unto him, Yea. 9 And it came to pass that he said unto me: Look, and behold that great and abominable church, which is the mother of abominations, whose founder is the devil. 10 And he said unto me: Behold there are save two churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth. 11 And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the whore of all the earth, and she sat upon many waters; and she had dominion over ball the earth, among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people. 12 And it came to pass that I beheld the church of the Lamb of God, and its numbers were few, because of the wickedness and abominations of the whore who sat upon many waters; nevertheless, I beheld that the church of the Lamb, who were the saints of God, were also upon ball the face of the earth; and their dominions upon the face of the earth were small, because of the wickedness of the great whore whom I saw. 13 And it came to pass that I beheld that the great mother of abominations did gather together multitudes upon the face of all the earth, among all the nations of the Gentiles, to fight against the Lamb of God. 14 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the power of the Lamb of God, that it descended upon the saints of the church of the Lamb, and upon the covenant people of the Lord, who were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory. 15 And it came to pass that I beheld that the wrath of God was poured out upon that great and abominable church, insomuch that there were wars and rumors of wars among all the nations and kindreds of the earth. 16 And as there began to be wars and rumors of wars among all the nations which belonged to the mother of abominations, the angel spake unto me, saying: Behold, the wrath of God is upon the mother of harlots; and behold, thou seest all these things 17 And when the day cometh that the wrath of God is poured out upon the mother of harlots, which is the great and abominable church of all the earth, whose founder is the devil, then, at that day, the work of the Father shall commence, in preparing the way for the fulfilling of his covenants, which he hath made to his people who are of the house of Israel. 18 And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, saying: Look! 19 And I looked and beheld a man, and he was dressed in a white robe. 20 And the angel said unto me: Behold one of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 21 Behold, he shall see and write the remainder of these things; yea, and also many things which have been. 22 And he shall also write concerning the end of the world. 23 Wherefore, the things which he shall write are just and true; and behold they are written in the book which thou beheld proceeding out of the mouth of the Jew; and at the time they proceeded out of the mouth of the Jew, or, at the time the book proceeded out of the mouth of the Jew, the things which were written were plain and pure, and most precious and easy to the understanding of all men. 24 And behold, the things which this apostle of the Lamb shall write are many things which thou hast seen; and behold, the remainder shalt thou see. 25 But the things which thou shalt see hereafter thou shalt not write; for the Lord God hath ordained the apostle of the Lamb of God that he should write them. 26 And also others who have been, to them hath he shown all things, and they have written them; and they are sealed up to come forth in their purity, according to the truth which is in the Lamb, in the own due time of the Lord, unto the house of Israel. 27 And I, Nephi, heard and bear record, that the name of the apostle of the Lamb was john, according to the word of the angel. 28 And behold, I, Nephi, am forbidden that I should write the remainder of the things which I saw and heard; wherefore the things which I have written sufficeth me; and I have written but a small part of the things which I saw. 29 And I bear record that I saw the things which my father saw, and the angel of the Lord did make them known unto me. 30 And now I make an end of speaking concerning the things which I saw while I was carried away in the spirit; and if all the things which I saw are not written, the things which I have written are true. And thus it is. Amen.

St. Louis Missouri Temple |
Dedicatory Prayer |
O God, our Eternal Father, we bow before Thee in reverence and love. We worship Thee as the Almighty who is above all, the great Elohim. We love Thee as our Father. With thanksgiving we come unto Thee in this Thy holy house to dedicate it to Thee and to Thy Beloved Son, our Divine Redeemer.
We thank Thee for the great prophet of this dispensation, even the Prophet Joseph Smith. We thank Thee for the wondrous power, authority, and gifts restored through him, including the grand keys for the redemption of the dead.
We are reminded that this temple stands on the soil of the state of Missouri where the Prophet and his associates suffered so much, and were finally banished by a cruel and illegal order of extermination. Terrible were their losses, terrible their suffering. We are grateful that the extermination order has been revoked and the persecution is long since gone. Today Thy Church basks in the sunlight of good will. Hundreds of thousands of visitors have come to view this Thy holy house. They have left with respect and appreciation.
This beautiful structure stands as a testimony of the strength and resiliency of Thy people. Thy Church has become a mighty congregation, ten million strong, spread among the nations. The little stone which was cut out of the mountain without hands is rolling forth to fill the whole earth. May it grow and enlarge until it has fulfilled its divine destiny.
"And we ask Thee, Holy Father, that Thy servants [the missionaries] may go forth from this house armed with Thy power, and that Thy name may be upon them, and Thy glory be round about them, and Thine angels have charge over them" (D&C 109:22).
May all who enter the portals of this Thy holy house be clean before Thee. May their minds be filled with the "solemnities of eternity" (D&C 43:34). May they draw near unto Thee as they reflect upon the wonders of Thy glorious plan of redemption. May a knowledge of the blessings of the Atonement of Thy Beloved Son distill upon them and cause them to praise His holy name.
May all who come to be baptized for the dead receive understanding of Thy divine plan for Thy sons and daughters of all generations. May those who are endowed recognize the gravity of the covenants which they make with Thee. May their minds be touched with appreciation for the eternal nature of the promises they make and the blessings they receive.
May those who kneel at the altars in this Thy house sense the wonder and the glory of the everlasting blessings sealed upon them. May they henceforth live with love and respect one for another. May all who serve as proxies for the dead be aware of Thy great mercy in behalf of Thy children for whom a marvelous work is going forward on the other side of the veil. May both the living and the dead rejoice at the opening of this new and dedicated temple.
And now, Father, acting in the authority of the holy priesthood which Thou hast bestowed upon us and in the name of Thy Son Jesus Christ, we dedicate this the St. Louis Missouri Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We dedicate it to Thee and to Thy Divine Son as the House of the Lord. Wilt Thou accept it as the offering of Thy faithful people. Wilt Thou be pleased to honor it with Thy presence and let Thy Spirit dwell here at all times.
We dedicate the grounds on which it stands with their lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers. We pray that all who pass this way may look upon it with reverence and respect, and feel constrained in their hearts to learn more concerning Thy work.
We dedicate the structure from the footings to the figure of Moroni. We dedicate all of the features and furnishingsthe baptistry, the facilities for the various ordinances, the sealing rooms with their sacred altars, the offices and all associated facilities, and every other feature and ornamentation of this unique and wonderful House of the Lord.
May Thy watchful and protecting care be over it, that it may be preserved from the evil hand of the unrighteous, that none shall defile it in any way. May it be preserved by Thy power against the elements, the storm and the tempest, and the tremblings of the earth.
We pray that it may be a place of peace and security and that all who enter it may do so with the realization that they come as Thy guests to Thy house. We pray for those who shall preside here and for all who shall serve here in any capacity. We pray for those who will come as patrons, some from great distances. May all find this to be a place of refuge from the noise and unrest of the world.
Now, beloved Father, please bless Thy work and Thy people wherever they may be found. We remember before Thee those of the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles, and all of the General and Area Authorities and the general officers of the Church. We pray for those who serve in stake presidencies and bishoprics that they may stand as benevolent shepherds to their people.
Open the windows of heaven and shower down blessings upon the faithful who consecrate of their substance to the advancement of Thy work. May they be blessed in their basket and in their store.
Accept of our thanks, dear Father, and of our prayer of dedication of this the fiftieth temple serving Thy people. Bless us as Thy servants to carry on Thy work in a manner pleasing unto Thee. We pray that we may be faithful in seeking and receiving our own temple ordinances, and that the blessings offered in this holy house may be extended to uncounted numbers of Thy departed children. Through the ordinances herein performed may those who have passed through the veil of death be enabled to move forward on their eternal journey.
Now, as we dedicate this Thy holy house, we rededicate ourselves to Thy service in building Thy kingdom. With solemnity of spirit, with love and gratitude, with hope and charity and faith, we consecrate it to Thy divine purposes and do it as Thy loving sons and daughters in the name of the Redeemer of the world, Thy Beloved Son, even the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
"The Catholic Church has ordered dioceses across the globe not to give information in parish registers to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Vatican Congregation for Clergy issued a letter directing all Catholic bishops to keep LDS members from microfilming and digitizing information in registers, according to the Catholic News Service.
CNS reported the Vatican had "grave reservations" about the LDS Church's practice of posthumous baptisms by proxy, a practice in which the names of the deceased are baptized into the LDS faith so that they may be united in the afterlife with LDS families, if they so choose.
Father James Massa, executive director of the U.S. bishop's Secretariat of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs is quoted by CNS as saying the step was taken to prevent LDS members from using the records.
"The congregation requests that the conference notifies each diocesan bishop in order to ensure that such a detrimental practice is not permitted in his territory, due to the confidentiality of the faithful and as not to cooperate with the erroneous practices of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," CNS reports the Vatican letter stating.
Catholics told not to give LDS parish data
What are the mormons going to use for names after the ancestors of the 22,000 have all been dunked? Do it all over again?
blasphemy
Great, that’s exciting news. Temples are beautiful. I’m sure the Pope won’t mind, the Catholic faith and the Mormon faith get along quite well. Half of my family is Mormon, and half is Catholic. We all love and respect each other very much.
The view that the Catholic Church was the whore of Babylon was a mainstream protestant teaching of the 1800's. A few mormons in the late 1800's and early 1900's subscribed to a similar view that the "Great and Abominable Church" referred to the Catholic Church. This corruption of belief and the text of the BoM, was declared false doctrine (ie Pratt's "Seer" and later Mckonkies privately published "Mormon Doctrine" book which he published 12 years before he became an apostle).
Please go ahead show me in the text of the BoM refers to the Catholic church as the great and abominable church (or the whore of babylon for the protestant minds out there)
...there are save two churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth" (1 Ne. 14:10-11)
I am glad that Mormons rejected the false interpretation.
Here are a few quotes of guys you might know? how many protestants today still believe this? Google it and quite a few Protestant (Evangelical) sites come up. It seems some still believe the false interpretation even into the 21st century.
wiki- Whore of Babylon Roman Catholic Church
[edit] Protestant Reformation Most Reformation writers and all Reformers themselves, from Martin Luther (who wrote On the Babylonian Captivity of the Church), John Calvin, and John Knox (who wrote The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women) identify the Roman Catholic Church with the Whore of Babylon.[8][9] This opinion influenced several generations in England and Scotland when it was put into the 1599 edition of the Geneva Bible.
Identification of the Pope as the Antichrist was written into Protestant creeds such as the Westminster Confession of 1646. The identification of the Roman Catholic Church with the Whore of Babylon is kept in the Scofield Reference Bible (whose 1917 edition identified "ecclesiastical Babylon" with "apostate Christendom headed by the Papacy") and pro-Reformation writings such as those of I.M. Haldeman, and it is kept alive by contemporary figures such as Ian Paisley and Jack Chick. The "drunkenness with the blood of saints and martyrs," by this interpretation, refers to the veneration of saints and relics and the Sunday sacredness, which is viewed by Reformers as idolatry and apostasy. Some Protestants commonly used the phrase "Whore of Babylon" to refer to the Roman Catholic Church.
Tithing is a biblical teaching don't you follow it?
Some of us follow conservative principles that'd make any FReeper proud.
Like most Mormons I've got my food storage, ammo storage, and try to stay out of debt.
Hmmm, since I've posted that information to you before I am left to conclude that A. you have simply forgotten or B. you are intentionally acting like you don't know.
McKonie was dealt with in 1960 and The seer was dealt with in 1862. So the question is why have you brought up a source that was declared false at the time by the mormon authorities a half a century and another from a century and a half ago?
Wiki can be your friend.
Wiki-
the January 8, 1960 office notes of McKay reflect that:
"We [the First Presidency of the Church] decided that Bruce R. McConkies book, Mormon Doctrine recently published by Bookcraft Company, must not be re-published, as it is full of errors and misstatements, and it is most unfortunate that it has received such wide circulation. It is reported to us that Brother McConkie has made corrections to his book, and is now preparing another edition. We decided this morning that we do not want him to publish another edition."[2]
wiki the Seer
In 1865, a majority of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the LDS Church officially condemned some of Pratt's doctrinal declarations contained in The Seer:
"The Seer [and other writings by Pratt] contain doctrines which we cannot sanction, and which we have felt impressed to disown, so that the Saints who now live, and who may live hereafter, may not be misled by our silence, or be left to misinterpret it. Where these objectionable works, or parts of works, are bound in volumes, or otherwise, they should be cut out and destroyed."
Deseret News, Aug. 12, 1865, 373; see also B.H. Roberts, Defense of the Faith and the Saints, 2:294 (1912).
So, declaring "false doctrine" erases the statements of all the momrons who subscribed to the "Abominable Whore" doctrine. Convenient.
As to your other declarations, without live links to check, they aren't worth considering. Try posting the URLs to these statements.
Yep, the citizens who are suffering just need to be reminded that the mormons are much better off!
I've seen the speculation that the LDS church has decided to poke Rome in the eye for banning mormons from their parish genealogy records by building that temple under the nose of the Vatican. Have you heard why the audience snickered when Monson announced the Rome temple, BTW??
"For LDS members the announcement of new temples is always met with excitement and gratitude but when President Monson named the Rome Temple he seemed to anticipate how members would react. It was silent for a couple of seconds then the congregation seemed to realize their collective moment of astonishment and laughed."
