Were the Mayans Aliens?
Cancun Today ^ | Dec 12th, 2007

The many surprisingly advanced civilizations in the New World boggled the mind of the first Europeans that arrived.

How could these savages construct amazing buildings and maintain an advanced social structure, when they didn't even know about God? Wild theories were soon introduced to explain the mystery. The most common theory, and one that you will still hear, is that early Europeans or Egyptians must have visited the New World centuries earlier, bringing their wisdom and knowledge.

Even though we do know that parts of the New World were indeed visited before Columbus, it is more likely that civilizations developed independently on different continents. In modern day, this there's no way they could have done this themselves theory has prevailed and, in some cases, evolved into absurdity.

Some people actually believe that the Maya, along with the builders of the pyramids in Egypt and the Nazca lines in Peru, must have received other-worldly help. Do what you want with that theory, but the truth is there are lots of mysteries involving the Maya.

Not only did they construct amazing temples in perfect geophysical alignment, they also made roads between cities. These roads are called sacbe, which means white road. Like so many other features of Mayan culture they remain a mystery. They are perfectly straight, even between cities quite far apart. They are raised, built on a platform, and paved with white stone.

At times reaching 10 meters in width, the sacbe seem suited for wagons and heavy traffic. However, the Maya knew of but did not utilize the wheel and there weren't any big mammals in the Mayan world before the Spanish brought the horse. The grandeur of the sacbe was most probably due to ceremonial purposes...

For Discussion: What made the Mayan Calendar so unique? Why did Nostradamus see the Wheel in the Mayan Calendar as the end of time..Time has run out. Is there Scriptual Prophecy that speaks of 12 and time running out.

A good place to start is this article.

In all seriousness. I think that they and several other old civilizations were influenced or helped by some force that is lost to time. Aliens - maybe - likely? Probably not. Ancient wisdom from people who are now past memory - more likely. The theory that early Europeans taught them something is a stretch. Europe was a feudal fiefdom with very little technology in the period. If they taught pyramid building why are all the castles in Europe built with stones two or three men could easily handle?

I for one think the Stargate (yes the movie and TV show)theory is about the most valid if you want to guess with no facts.

Naah.
Just clever Indians. If they could invent corn, they could come up with pyramids.

Yup I left that one out, sorry. However, the fact that they came up with many of the the same formulas apparently used by the Egyptians is interesting. There is historic data that many “discoveries” happened in isolated instances until some form of communication was developed between societies.

The other thing that bothers me most is that many ancient societies associated these developments are GONE!!!!

Well many people are very caught up in this entire 2012 Theory based on the calendar of the Mayans?
Are some of them whacky? of course..

Are some of them people that just are seeking wisdom of the Shift Alignment they see from some of the science lierature that is out there...Yes

And some like me just wondering how this fits in with biblical prophecy concering the tribualtion period and the return of Jesus Christ.

This whole concept is actually quite demeaning to the Mayans, since it presupposes that they couldn't have developed complex geometry or architecture without otherworldly assistance. "My! What a straight line this 400 foot wall has! And look! You can't even wedge a knife blade between any two stones! Why, it must have been built by, or at least built with the assistance of...SPACE ALIENS!!!" The natural ingenuity of human beings is never even considered. What nonsense!

Besides, what they wound-up building hardly points automatically to alien work or assistance. They built obvious temples for the worship or appeasement of their gods, and they worked in stone for Pete's sake! Why didn't the aliens, so otherwise eager to help the Mayans, the Incans, the Egyptians, the Sumerians, and so forth, ever give these ancient civilizations a hand in developing metallurgy? The Mayans and Incans mostly carved stone with stone, the Egyptians and Sumerians did most of their early megaconstruction using copper tools. If these alien civilizations could traverse the cosmos, doubtless using highly advanced metallurgy to do it, it seems awfully strange that they "taught" lowly Mayans and the like how to build enormous structures with amazing precision, but somehow "forgot," apparently, to teach them how to cut the stones with metal tools, or even better, to build using metal in the construction. And, what would have been the point to all of this, anyway?

These speculative articles posted here on the Religion Forum make us all look silly. Von Daniken and his ilk have long since been thoroughly debunked. Why do we need to bother with this>

Nope...they were descendants of the ancient Lemurians who managed to survive their continent's sinking...

Yep, there were "pre-history" civilizations that were amazingly advanced because they'd been around for a very long time to get to that point, but were ultimately almost completely erased from extreme climate change and humanity had to start over again nearly from scratch.

First the wheel, and before you know it, internal combustion engines.

Then it’s just a matter of time before the planet’s population is wiped out by global warming!

No, those space aliens knew what they were doing, keeping the Mayans busy with human sacrifices. ;^)

Wife and I visited a new resort at Huatulco and quickly became bored with the place. A travel agency in our hotel suggested the "real Mexico" was a half hour plane ride back north, to Oaxaca.
We flew in an Air Liberdat, DC-3 that was spotlessly maintained. Oaxaca was like stepping back into Mexico's Spanish past, except everyone was five feet tall and brown.
Unfortunately, we had just missed the Oaxaca Radish Festival...

I have not been to either place but I know many that have and had nearly the same comments.

BTW there is an effort for promoting the Bosnian pyramids as a tourist destination.

Not sure about that one!!

Man oh man, you must really be disappointed. An entire festival based on a barely edible vegetable. I bet they batter them and deep fry. Num num, radishes.

Yes, but at over 258,000, Oaxaca City isn’t the sleepy little village of 25,000 it was 50 years ago when it became known for its artistry and crafts. Oaxaca State population is over 3.2 million with the majority in the suburbs of the cities.

Our sojourn was 20 years ago. I don’t know what the population was at the time but there was traffic at the airport so Oaxaca must have been a regional center for something besides tourism. We ran into several Americans at an outdoor restaurant in the town plaza. One guy said he spent his winters in Mexico ever since retiring from the Navy. We noticed many of the locals did not speak Spanish (at least the Spanish I knew) amongst themselves.

Actually the Mayans just like the Egyptians were unable to reproduce the monuments that the first ones built. The old buildings in Egypt are over 10,000 years old just like the Mayan buildings are as old. Water and wind erosion on the sphinx show that it is much older than Egyptionoligist are willing to admit because if they did it would place them outside of their preconceived time lines that they built them.

Back in the early 1900s a fair number of American Christians studied Euhemerus, a Greek historian from Cassandra’s court circa 330-260BC. Euhemerus held the position that the ancient mythologies had some basis in fact, although perhaps not clearly or properly understood in his then modern day interpretations. He maintained gods and heroes of ancient mythologies were actually men of note commemorated by their respective cultures.

IMHO, there is an additional element not always perceived in mythologies and such commemoration. It is similar to recent deification of Obama by some of his followers who refer to him as messiah. Myths probably have some basis in fact, as discernible from fable, and many may actually have spiritual underpinnings.

There are also amazingly consistent theories associated with such mythologies as linked to angelic creatures an antediluvian interactions with mankind, similar to reports of the Nephilim, Anachim, and other offspring associated in the Books of Enoch, Genesis and Exodus.

IMHO, such creatures do exist and are generally bound in Hades, but their reference in the book of Christ’s Revelation to John such as the demon army beneath the Euphrates being loosed, have been revealed for a reason.
