French Jewish Group Opposes Pius XII Sainthood

Friday, October 17, 2008 4:30 PM

PARIS -- France's main Jewish organization warned Friday that efforts to make wartime Pope Pius XII a saint would deal "a severe blow" to relations between Catholics and Jews.

The warning from an umbrella organization of French Jewish groups comes as the Vatican mounts a campaign to refute accusations Pius did not do enough to try to stop the extermination of 6 million Jews during World War II.

"Pope Pius XII, worried about burning his bridges with Germany, never made a clear statement denouncing the singular monstrosity of the extermination of millions of Jews. Moreover, he did not do so after the war either, which is profoundly shocking," the organization, Conseil Representatif des Institutions juives de France, said in a statement.

"If carried out, the plan to beatify Pius XII, who was pope between 1939 and 1958, would deal a severe blow to relations between the Catholic Church and the Jewish world," the statement said.

Since when does the Catholic church need another group’s approval before making someone a saint? I think its time to tell these people to shut up.

“Nazi concentration camp unveils monument to Catholic priests killed in Holocaust

Berlin, Nov 6, 2006 / 12:00 am (CNA).- A new stone sculpture was unveiled in Germany this weekend to commemorate the many Catholic priests and monks killed in a lesser-known World War II Nazi concentration camp near Berlin.

The sculpture, unveiled Saturday, is engraved with a cross and the names of 96 clergy who died at Sachsenhausen concentration camp on the north-west outskirts of Berlin, reported Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

Cardinal Jozef Glemp, primate of Poland, attended the ceremony as most of the priests were Polish.

To date, historians working for the Archdiocese of Berlin have documented the names of 711 Catholic clergy from Poland, Germany, and other European nations who were incarcerated in the Sachsenhausen camp....”

“In January, 1940, against protests by Mussolini’s government, the Vatican appointed two Jews to the Vatican Academy of Science. (N.Y. Times, Jan. 10, 1940) In March, he appointed another Jewish professor to the Vatican Library to restore ancient maps, twelve hours before the new Italian laws went into effect prohibiting Jews from all professional life . (N.Y. Times, March 2, 1940 )

Near the Ides of March, the German Foreign Secretary, Joachim von Ribbentrop came to the Vatican for an official visit. The Times reported that the Pope defended the Jews in Germany and Poland, and that von Ribbentrop left the audience “downcast”. The Times called the visit, “Hitler’s Canossa.” (N.Y. Times, March 14, 1940)

In a letter to the editor of the Times, the Provost of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America reminded the readers that the foundational concept of democracy is the “supreme worth and dignity of the individual.” Louis Finkelstein continued, “The hostility to all forms of religion, characteristic of modern totalitarianism, is directed at this most fundamental religious concept, and leads us to the conclusion that the preservation of freedom is inextricably bound to the preservation of religion.” He then stated that it was the Christian churches that offered resistance to the Third Reich. “No keener rebuke has come to Nazism than from Pope Pius XI and his successor, Pope Pius XII.” (N.Y. Times, March 31, 1940, p. 8, 7)

Later in that month, Albert Einstein spoke out in favor of the Pope, as quoted above.

In his Christmas address to the College of Cardinals, Pius XII once again took aim at Hitler. The Times editorialized,

“If the Pope in his Christmas message had intended to condemn Hitler’s system, he could not have done it more effectively than by describing the ‘moral order’ which must govern human society. . . . The Pontiff pointed out that the foundation of the moral order is trust, ‘fidelity in the observance of pacts.’ Without trust–and this war has demonstrated the truth of his words–the coexistence of powerful and weak peoples is impossible. The moral order, he added, cannot be based on hatred, on the principle that ‘might makes right,’ on economic maladjustment, on ‘the spirit of cold egoism’ which leads to the violation of the sovereignty of states and the liberty of their citizens. The moral order, in a word, is in complete contradiction to Hitler’s order.” (N.Y. Times, Dec. 25, 1940, p. 26,2)”

The kindest thing that can be said about Pope Pius XII is that he was a mediocrity. Terming him a saint would be an insult to the other real saints.

*** well good...fine, perhaps you can have nice relations with the Islamofascists then... ***

Not Islamofascists, but I do with Muslims.

In 38 years in the construction business I've dealt with people of every race and religion, including no religion like atheists. The fairest and most honorable I've found to deal with were Muslims.

No tricks, no lies, no reneging on a verbal, handshake agreement. No digging through Project Specifications to find some obscure clause to screw me or the company I worked for out of money on Change Orders. Or to require work be done that wasn't our normal responsibility. The Muslims word was their bond.

All that aside, my point was that everyone should keep their nose out of other peoples religion, or branch of a religion. I don't care what Jews do in their Temple, what snake handling Baptists do in Alabama, or Episcopalians do with gay Bishops.

So IMO what Catholics do regarding Pope Pius XII is nobody else's business. If the Jews don't like this, tough noogies.

Thanks for the ping.

Just a passing thought. We are approaching an election in which one of the candidates Obama is not only pro abortion, but is pro infanticide. Bambi also wants to redistribute the wealth just as the socialists in Germany wanted to.

I just read that the Roman Catholic Bishops in VA. told members of their church that to vote for someone who supports abortion you must have a reason that is as least as morally grave. I'm paraphrasing, so if I have it wrong please let me know.

Now might be a good time to see how any of our churches behave in this election. I think the parallels to the past are striking.

It would be a disgrace to make this man a Saint. Especially considering that if there’s a hell, he is almost certainly in it right now. Why not canonize Hugh O’Flaherty, a monsignor at the Vatican who came in direct conflict with Pius by sheltering Jews in Rome?

Care to cite some sources for this "direct conflict"?

Jews were being sheltered at the Pope's own vacation house at Castel Gandolfo. Are you trying to tell us that was done against the Pope's own wishes?

You need to learn history. Pius XII actually hid people in his own home. He hid Jews in the Vatican as well. He hid Jews in other church properties as well. He instructed Catholics to hide Jews in convents, monasteries, seminaries and private homes.

“Of 9,700 Roman Jews, 1,007 were shipped to Auschwitz. The rest were hidden, 5,000 of them by the official Church—3,000 in Castel Gandolfo, 200 or 400 (estimates vary) as “members” of the Palatine Guard and some 1,500 in monasteries, convents and colleges. The remaining 3,700 were hidden in private homes, including Msgr. O’Flaherty’s network of apartments.”

“Elsewhere in Italy,” Pinchas Lapide says, “thanks in part to the lifting of the enclosure...at least 40,000 Italian Jews and others who had managed to flee to Italy were hidden and saved by humble priests, monks, farmers and laborers, dozens of whom lost their lives for sheltering them.”

Pinchas Lapide was Jewish by the way.

And what did Msgr. O’Flaherty get for coming into “in direct conflict with Pius” as you claim? Pius XII named him to the “Notary of the Holy Office, the first Irishman to receive that honor.”

Get a clue.

You wrote:

“There were many protestants who saved Jews.”

No, actually there were only a few - mostly in Holland, Denmark and Norway, some Frenchmen and some Swedes working in Eastern Europe.

“They just didn’t tell about it, and maybe didn’t LIVE to tell about it.”

No, actually we know all about what those Protestants did because plenty has been published about it. Corrie ten Boom, Raoul Wallenberg, Emilie Guth and Ermine Orsi, etc. Catholics who hid Jews, however, have often gone unnoticed. I mean this quite literally. Some were unknown to history until accidental discoveries.

Ever hear of Giovanni Palatucci? How about Luiz Martins de Souza Dantas? Sister Sara Salkahazi (martyred for helping Jews)? Mother Maria Elisabetta Hesselblad? Fr. Placido Cortese (tortured, mutilated and buried alive for helping Jews)? The evidence is endless: http://www.zenit.org/article-618?l=english

The Nazis knew Catholics were helping Jews: http://www.raoulwallenberg.net/?en/press/eichmann-s-diary-reveals.4348.htm

And they made plans to deal with it: http://www.zenit.org/article-2172?l=english

“Corrie tenBoom and her family suffered and most died because they courageously hid Dutch Jews in their home.”

And so did THOUSANDS of Catholics who his Jews.

And Pius XII still saved 860,000 Jews - according to Jewish historians like Pinchas Lapide.

One of my ex-conservative senior friends intends to vote for Obama because he promised $50,000 tax free income to seniors. Presently he doesn't draw $50,000 from his pension or 401K combined yet must file quarterly estimated taxes and pay about $9-10,000 yearly in taxes. He expects to get off tax free if Obama is elected. I suggested to him that he immediately cease the quarterly payments in the event Obama is elected. After all, Obama promised to let him off tax free.

Heck I might do it myself. If, when, Uncle Sam comes after me I'll just say "Obama says I don't have to pay taxes".

It wasn't a comparison. Every time the subject is broached Petronski shouts out the impossible to prove number 860,000

I simply thought I could shout the total number of Jews killed also.

I’d say almost a million people saved is fairly significant.

It certainly is though that number is subject to "discussion". Sadly, history shows many more could have been saved by individual Protestants and Catholics, the Protestant and Catholic Churches, and by the various nations.

I don't believe there are any purely clean hands in the entire episode.

Aw, thanks for the ping guy!

The problem with the 860,000 Jews saved is that their survival gets in the way of the anti-Catholic bigots' talking points.

It would be better, from that point of view, if those Jews had not survived, to preserve the purity of the anti-Catholic fetish.

There’s a little more than two weeks left. I should think your churches would have a taken stand by now.

Haven’t some Protestant churches already taken a stand? Correct this if it is wrong. Granted it’s from 2002, but I don’t think the sentiment has changed.

I know, I know. This isn’t OUR flavor of Protestant. Our Protestants don’t DO that.

Handy, that.

“US PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH VOTES TO ALLOW “UNRESTRICTED RIGHT” TO ABORTION TILL VIABILITY

WASHINGTON, June 24, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) voted Friday to affirm the “unrestricted right” to abortion prior to the child being able to survive on his/her own outside the womb. After viability, the assembly says, late term abortion is still acceptable but pastoral and medical counsel is advised and it is suggested only in cases of rape, incest, fetal suffering, and to preserve the health and life of the mother.

Judy L. Woods, moderator of the denomination’s advisory committee on litigation said “We affirmed the fundamental right to (abortion) prior to viability. But after viability, we have said that although there is still a right to choose, that choice has to be undertaken after prayer and pastoral consultation . . . and only in certain circumstances.” The denomination also voted to continue to fund late-term abortions under the church’s medical benefits plan. http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2002/jun/02062401.html

It is crazy. I saw that and couldn't help but think, "how can she think she is a Christian and support someone who believes in killing innocent babies"?

There is very little I agree with the RCC on, but from what I've seen a lot of Bishops have been telling their members that supporting politicians who are pro abortion is not consistent with what their church believes. I support them in this fight. I don't know how any Christian can support abortion, except maybe in cases of health, rape and incest.

I know this thread started out about WWII, but dehumanizing life and then destroying it through abortion is very similar.

He attends a big mega church in San Fran. I raised the question of abortion and he said "it's our turn now". He really didn't want to answer the question.

I'm praying for McCain/Palin every day. If they don't win I will be very interested to see how Christian support breaks down.

To: Marysecretary; OLD REGGIE
Don’t worry, Old Reggie, if Obama becomes President, they will be at all of our doors.

It won't be that obvious. It's like the boiling pot. You bring the water to a boil slowly, so the frog in the water doesn't know whats happening until too late.

Bambi will buy off segments of the population with tax credits and welfare payments disguised as tax credits. Over time people will come to expect the payments and demand more. Also, he won't directly attack things like marriage, but will appoint judges who will do it for him. In the end a culture is destroyed and replaced with one where the people look to govt. to provide everything.

In the years immediately following WW2 many Jewish groups and individuals—Golda Meir was one—publicly thanked the Pope for his assistance during the war. The revisionism came later, staring with a play by an anti-Catholic German leftist. The Church needs to ignore this. Jewish Catholic relations are virtually nonexistent in any case, and consist largely of relentless bigoted attacks on the Church by secular, non-believing Jews.
