Catholic Caucus: Breaking: MLK close relative supporting/voting McCain...
Various | November 2, 2008 | Vanity

Dr. Alveda King works with Father Frank Pavone (PFL) in the Gospel of Life Ministry. She personally supports and will vote for McCain-Palin. This is significant as she is a close relative of Martin Luther King, Jr.

She is the niece of Martin Luther King, Jr. Her father, A. D. King worked with his brother Martin on Civil Rights. She is author of the book: Sons of Thunder (ISBN-13 : 9781413411263). This book about her father (Dr. A. D. King) and her uncle Martin (Martin Luther King, Jr.)

Dr. Alveda King is head of African-American outreach for the Gospel of Life Ministry.

Her web page: KingForAmerica.com seems to indicate that she has strong voice in the Martin Luther King Senior family. Martin Luther King, Sr. is the father of A. D. King and Martin Luther King, Jr. He and his wife was dismayed to learn that his granddaughter (Dr. Alveda King) had abortions. Dr. Alveda King had two abortions -- which she deeply regrets.

Gospel of Life is an ecumenical organization, and Dr. Alveda King is not Catholic. But it was a Catholic priest (Father Frank Pavone of Priest for Life) who helped to recruit her into the Gospel of Life Ministry.

Prior to that, Dr. Alveda King had been involved in the Silent No More Awareness Campaign. In particular, she was involved in expressed "regret for having had an abortion". She had worked with Father Frank Pavone of PFL and Janet Morana of PFL (and co-founder of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign

The following is an excerpt from a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania newspaper about Dr. Alveda King's personal/private support of the McCain-Palin campaign. The newspaper is the Philadelphia Bulletin

...

But the most recognizable name is Dr. Alveda King, director of African-American Outreach, Gospel of Life Ministries, a niece of Dr. Martin Luther King.

"I am very excited about the McCain-Palin ticket, simply because they support the values that mean the most to me," Ms. King said. "It is a plus to me that Sarah Palin is a woman because I've been elected to office as a wife and mother. I've been appointed to office as a woman and at the time I was a mother and became a grandmother."

Ms. King said her experience taught her she could both be a good mother and still serve the public. This is something she has in common with Gov. Sarah Palin, R-Alaska, McCain's running mate.

However, the most important reason she is backing the McCain-Palin ticket is its commitment to the pro-life cause.

Additionally, it is from my personal knowledge of Dr. Alveda King that this article is written. I have even met two of her charming daughters at a Priests for Life picnic (2005)

First and foremost, I knew Dr. Alveda King when I worked at Priests for Life and I worked on her laptop and helped her with computer work.

I am posting this because there are prominent African Americans (such as this member of the King family) who support/will vote McCain-Palin.

I believe if people realize that Obama does have this important vote from the King Family, other people might consider voting McCain-Palin.

It is a story to share, especially so close to the election.

Pro-Life ping.

Election ping.

This is posted under Catholic, as many "Catholic Connections" were responsible for my knowledge of this story...

I think that such an important member of the King family is for McCain-Palin and opposes Obama (because of abortion) is something to share with people...

I am taking liberties with the title to try to increase hit count, and help sway voters to realize how important the "sanctity of life" issue is in this election...

I emailed Mark Steyn recently and asked him to address the question "Would Martin Luther King vote for Barack Obama?"

I strongly believe MLK would find it impossible to support Obama, given his craven perversion of the race movement for personal/government power in a manner not unlike a slave master's, and his degenerate view of the value of the lives of unborn children.

If Martin Luther King, Jr. was a man of principle, he could not support Obama/Biden.

There are also those who post that MLK Jr. was a Republican.

Considering the Democratic Party (in the South) from about 1860-1965 favored segregation and was hostile to African Americans, I think he would consider voting for a Republican today.

People need to remember that Senator Robert Byred of West Virginia was a prominent member of the Klu Klux Klan... Such was the status of many Southern Democratic politicians (in my opinion) priot to 1965.

I am hoping that putting this under Catholic will give it more visibility and maybe some lurkers might forward this on...

I am posting under Catholic to try to "Protect" this thread.

I personally believe that this thread can be used to try to persuade "Social Justice" Catholics to vote for McCain-Palin. Some of these people who put poverty ahead of abortion might be surprised at the stand of Dr. Alveda King.

It is my personal belief that Father Frank Pavone was key to getting Dr. Alveda King involved in the Gospel of Life Ministry. As part of the Pro-Life movement, some of her peers were Dr. Paul Schenck, Mr. Jim Pinto, Father Jim Heyd, Father Peter West, Father Denis Wilde, among others.

In short, Dr. Alveda King has been helped by pro-life Catholics, as well as other pro-lifers of the Christian faith, in her journey to help save unborn babies...

"People need to remember that Senator Robert Byred of West Virginia was a prominent member of the Klu Klux Klan... Such was the status of many Southern Democratic politicians (in my opinion) priot to 1965."

Byrd and his Democratic cronies filibustered the Civil Rights Amendment--going against their own Party's president, Lyndon Johnson.

It was Republicans that got it passed into law.

This is a religion thread. Probably a better term would be that she has great courage and conviction. And she correctly interprets Christian beliefs

That is what set Martin Luther King, Jr. apart from others.

A good source for this election is the book Render Unto Caesar. It has the subtitle of Serving the Nation by Living Our Catholic Beliefs in Political Life.

This book is written by talented writer by the name of Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., who also just happends to be the Archbishop of Denver in the Roman Catholic Church.

In Chapter 8 of this book, titled Conscience and Cowardice, author Chaput spends the last part of the chapter (a few pages) on Letter from a Birmingham Jail, written by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This chapter spans pages 138-157. The part on MLK Jr is only from pages 154-157. The following is the last two paragraphs of this chapter of Archbishop Chaput's book:

Dr. [Martin Luther King, Jr.] and his followers were willing to go to jail for conscience' sake. His "Letter" is an example of using language in the service of truth; of the power of words to compel action consistent with God's higher law; of a healthy and articulate Christian conscience. His "Letter" also reminds us that too many of us are willing to live quite comfortably as cowards. King wrote that "human progress never rolls in on the whells of inevitability; it coms through the tireless efforts of men willing to be co-workers with God, and without this hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the forces of social stagnation."

[Dr. Martin Luther] King [Jr.] was deeply troubled that the world so readily dismissed the Christian church, Christ's community of disciples, "as an irrelevant social club with no meaning for the 20th century." He lamented, "In deep disappointment I ahve wept over the laxity of the Church." King had little use for lax Christians. Neither should we -- especially if the lax Christians are us. We have no excuses. We have too many models of courage to guide us.

It should be noted that I am quoting from a public library copy of this book. I live in a Catholic city that believes in putting a book like it in it. This is Lafayette, Louisiana, and I am proud to say that. I had no pride living in New York City, NY -- the abortion capital of the United States -- in my opinion.

In the book, author Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., has footnote 16 for his reference to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Letter from a Birmingham Jail".

Here is that footnote, complete with a PDF link to the letter as well as the link by the Alabama Clergymen that sparked it:

[Footnotes for Chapter 8: Conscience and Cowardice]

16. Martin Luther King Jr., "Letter from Birmingham Jail," available from stanford.edu/group/King/frequentdocs/birmingham.pdf; for the "Statement of Alabama Clergymen" that sparked it, see stanford.edu/group/King/frequentdocs/clergy.pdf.

Note that there are embedded links to the PDF's (which the book cannot have since it is an old fashioned book -- you cannot click on books -- though you may be able to scan them...)

When I was working at PFL, I worked with her.

I used to have to help her get things printed off her laptop.

She has an "African American" outreach at PFL.
