On the end of Catholic Hospitals
American Papist ^ | November 13, 2008 | Thomas Peters

Posted on 11/13/2008 9:51:40 AM PST by NYer

Ed Morissey at Hot Air tells us how serious the bishops are about not allowing Catholic Hospitals to be forced into performing abortions under FOCA:
[The bishops will] shut them down and take the losses in order to prevent their use as abortion clinics. To do otherwise, the bishops stated, would be to cooperate in the evil of abortions.

What kind of impact would that have? The Catholic Church is one of the nation’s biggest health-care providers. In 2007, they ran 557 hospitals that serviced over 83 million patients. The church also had 417 clinics that saw over seven million patients. If they shut down almost a thousand hospitals and clinics nationwide, the US would not just lose a significant portion of available health care, but the poor and working-class families that received the health care would have fewer options.

Also, the Catholic Church runs this on a non-profit basis, spending vast sums of its money to ensure access for those unable to pay. That’s the kind of model that many on the Left believe should exclusively provide health care — and FOCA would spell the end of the major provider already in that model.
Notice that point about Catholic hospitals being non-profits? And to think that a common criticism of the Catholic pro-life movement during this election was that, somehow, we aren't serious about providing concrete medical care and assistance to the poor. Simply unbelievable.

So how serious are democrats and Obama about FOCA? Serious enough to push the Catholic Church in the US out of the health care industry?

Let's hope drawing these clear lines in the sand will give them pause. We're not blinking first.

They will. The government can take anyone’s property, especially when they disregard the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and after they put in their puppet judges. Pray for the protection of our conservative judges on the SCOTUS.

You receive public money, expect to do the “state’s” bidding. Same goes for “vouchers.”

We will have to do what the Irish did in the 18th century, when the Penal Codes made it a capital crime to teach an Irish child to read or write:

“Throughout those dark days, the hunted schoolmaster, with price upon his head, was hidden from house to house. And in the summertime, he gathered his little class, hungering and thirsting for knowledge, behind a hedge in a remote mountain glen—where, while each in turn the battered lads kept watch from the hilltop for the British soldiers, he fed to his eager pupils the forbidden fruit of knowledge.”

—Mac Manus, “The Story of the Irish Race” p.461

Does the FOCA demand that Catholic hospitals and Drs perform abortions?

The Catholic Church began underground, is currently underground in China, and will no doubt be underground again before this is all over. The only real issue is to pray that we have the faith to remain true to it.

FOCA would nullify state laws that protect doctors and hospitals that refuse to perform abortions. The USCCB has an analysis here :

http://www.usccb.org/prolife/issues/FOCA/analysis.pdf

FOCA would make abortion a fundamental right, like voting or free speech. That would strike down any state laws that allow doctors, pharmacists and hospitals who do not wish to perform abortions to opt out. They would be forced to either do the abortions or close.

Thanks for the analysis. I believe forcing Catholic or any other Dr/nurse to perform abortions in violation of their religious beliefs violates the 1st Amend freedom of religion. Gov’t cannot force a Jew or Muslim to eat a ham sandwich.

An end to the conscience-exemption for abortions? Closing Catholic hospitals? Perhaps we NEED a civil war.

They won’t just close the hospitals, they won’t sell them either, so they can’t reopen under new management and kill babies. Wonder if Obama’s Left will pony up the bucks and redistribute their personal wealth to help these folks?

I think it also violates the same "privacy rights" supposedly upheld in the Roe and Casey decisions -- specifically, the right of a doctor to opt out of abortion, the right of a pro-life patient to be able to choose to receive medical services from a pro-life doctor, and the right of both pro-life doctors and patients to come to their own conclusions about when human life begins, and to act on those conclusions.

IOW, the "Freedom of Choice Act" is very anti-choice, and very pro-abortion.

The Catholic run hospital is the model of healthcare and hospital that the left envisions, yet they seek to force it's hand?

Not quite. You see they are privately run, and by a religious organization, no less. Passing FOCA is a win/win for the Rats and BO. They increase and strengthen abortion "rights" and they improve their case for socializing the medical industry when the Catholic Church shuts down their hospitals, thus reducing the medical care options for the poor.
