The Acorn/CHD post (November 23rd CHD will be asking for your money) [Catholic Caucus]
American Papist ^ | November 14, 2008 | Thomas Peters

I've had lots of people asking me about ACORN and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CHD). Both are certainly in the news alot these days:
The CCHD has donated more than $7.3 million to ACORN-related projects over the past decade, including $40,000 to an ACORN chapter in Las Vegas, Nevada, that was raided before the election in an investigation into fraudulent voter registration forms. Among other questionable documents, the ACORN chapter submitted registration forms for members of the Dallas Cowboys football team.
Earlier this week I blogged about the US bishops' decision to stop funding ACORN.

Now many folks are saying that the CHD should be axed as well. Diane at Te Deum has a good post on this subject. Joseph Lawler was reporting on this back in October for the American Spectator:

The CCHD, which is run by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), has funded far-left organizations with missions diametrically opposed to that of the Catholic Church for years, including, in the '90s, the pro-abortion group National Organization for Women and the American Civil Liberties Union.
Richard John Neuhaus has also tackled the topic. Tom McFeely at the National Catholic Register picks up his trail - and the last paragraph is particularly important:

Father Neuhaus notes in this article that since its creation “in the ideological climate of the 1960s,” CHD has never directly supported Catholic charitable activities that aid the poor. It has concentrated instead on funding politically active groups such as ACORN that often support agendas like abortion rights that are in conflict with basic Church teachings.

Said Father Neuhaus, “What most Catholics don’t know, and what would likely astonish them, is that CHD very explicitly does not fund Catholic institutions and apostolates that work with the poor.”

And all of this attention couldn’t come at a worse time for CHD, with its annual collection in Catholic parishes scheduled for later this month. Under these circumstances, lay Catholics can scarcely be faulted for asking themselves whether they should place any money on this year’s CHD collection plate.

That's right, November 23rd CHD will be asking for your money, as you can see on the USCCB website.

There are so many good organizations strapped for cash these days - why take a risk on CHD?

I attended the Catholic Citizens of Illinois fundraiser last week and I was thrilled at the announcement made from the Podium.

Illinois Catholics were asked to WITHOLD their donations to the offering that was upcoming to the CHD because the offering was given to ACORN that was tied to election fraud!!

I cheered!!

That’s all I need to know...sending to my Catholic friends to tell them to keep thier money in thier pockets.

Ask and ye shall be rebuffed, to coin a phrase.

I am highly suspicious that if the parish does not collect the required monies for the CHD, the parish will be forced to pay its assesment from the regular Collection.

There is a precedent for this conclusion based on the fact that if the pact does not collect the assesed monies for the ARCHBISHOP GREGORY’S ANNUAL APPEAL THE PARISH MUST PAY THE MONIES FROM ITS REGULAR COLLECTIONS.

Hence, just because you may withhold contribution from the CHD, THE PARISH WILL PROBABLY BE FORCED TO PAY THE ASSESMENT FROM THE REGULAR COLLECTION.

In the diocese of Atlanta, the regular collection monies are sent to the ARCHDIOCESE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING FORMULA:

The $250,000 remain at the local parish.

28% of all other monies that are collected are sent to Archbishop Wilton Gregory to spend as he pleases with no accountability or transparency.

The wealth is spread around as Archbishop Gregory as he sees fit. While ACORN may not receive any monies, a new organization will be formed with the same charter and will be funded by the USCCB!

Don’t forget that most of these Bishop ar political beings and do whatever they have to do to be part of the OBAMA BANDWAGON.

Only 100 bishops signed up for the Pro Life position before the election.

Where were the other bishops?

I will not give the Catholic Church a nickel anymore until I know ACORN is off the list along with LULAC, SEIU (union)La Raza or any group like that. I told my priest that I will come to confession only.

I am shocked the church supports groups that support abortionists and people who support stealing elections.

Y'know, ethics, you got me in a spot of trouble the last time you were ranting and raving about Abp. Gregory. You claimed that he was an Obama supporter and would not speak out on the abortion issue to shield his 'friend' -- and the very next week he published a letter in the Bulletin speaking out and saying that life issues were of paramount importance and trumped any 'social justice' issues.

It looks like this screed about the CHD is merely your surmise or suspicion. I am not going to take your word for it a second time and be highly embarassed again.

I am going to do what you SHOULD have done before you posted this message -- call the Atlanta archdiocesan offices and inquire as to whether the parish has to make up any shortfall (if shortfall there be) for CHD.

I suggest you do the same.

Ithought they banned ACORN from the list.????

The collection is for CHD which funds other organizations whose work is not aligned with the Catholic faith.

It is very disappointing. Have you established a retirement fund? Ask your financial advisor about your investment portfolio. You may discover that some of the firms in which you are invested are right up there with ACORN in supporting abortion and fetal stem cell research. If so, you should look into:

Ave Maria Mutual Funds

Thanks. The funds are run by Amy Domini? Does she avoid lib things like open-borders.

Until the church cuts off ACORN and other leftists groups I will give nothing or a $1 or change on Sunday.

The Appeal does get assessed, but I don’t believe that any other extra collection does!

I called the Archdiocese.

The person who knows about the CHD is not in. They are supposed to be calling me back. We will see.

I know this is a Catholic Caucus thread, but I hope this post will be considered welcome and instructive.

The whole "Campaign for Human Development," if I recall correctly, was somehow tied in with the Saul Alinsky organization ("If you want peace, work for justice"). That was a big mistake on the Bishops' part.

Anyone besides me remember their lefty TV commercials? I remember on in particular that admitted they were working for "social change."

I have never heard that CHD collections can be taken from the parish in general. I’ve never been in a diocese that did that with the diocesan appeal, either. There’s a goal, but if the parish doesn’t meet it, they just get a sad note.
The priests’ retirement collection does come out of general funds, here, if the special collections aren’t sufficient.

I stopped supporting CHD when I learned that its purpose is to fund “intermediary” organizations, rather than to fund outfits doing useful work directly. I don’t think that’s effective, and would rather give extra to the priests’ retirement.

Never give money to the Campaign for Human Development. This is a racket. The money should stay with Catholic families or go to scholarships for Catholic education. Let the Democrats, George Soros and Warren Buffett pick up the tab for ACORN and the CHD.
