Pope says Catholics in politics must follow faith

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI is encouraging Catholics who get involved in politics to stay true to their church's teaching.

Benedict says it is necessary that a new generation of Catholics in politics be "coherent" with the faith they profess.

He also recommends that they act with moral rigor and work passionately for the common good.

The pope urged Vatican officials in a speech Saturday to be vigilant about the evangelical education of Catholics who get so involved in society.

Benedict recently said religion and politics should be "open to each other."

The Vatican is particularly attentive to political action about abortion, euthanasia and embryonic stem cell research.

This is directed to the universal Church, not just the US. The same secular/humanist problems we see here have surfaced in other countries around the globe.

Unfortunately the pope’s words fall on deaf ears. Might be God is still pissed at the church for covering up sexual within its ranks for decades and refusing to take responsibility for it (Cardinal Mahoney anyone?)

I love the Pope, nuts about him, but honestly, he never passes up an opportunity to say something so desperately obvious that I want to beat my head on the keyboard.

I know, I know ... Somebody Out There hasn’t heard this yet ...

But what does he plan to do about those who don’t? As long as politicians can claim to be Catholic while pushing pro-baby killing legislation, and same-sex marriage initiatives, and nothing happens to them, it just falls on deaf ears.

I guess the Pope has to say things over and over, since he can’t clobber anyone with a 2x4.

To a large extent, it is up to us, the faithful. Half of the bishops in the US may wind providing paving material to the floor of hell with their skulls, to invoke an old image.

Almost entirely, I'd say, given the extent to which we outnumber the clergy, and the variety of solid teaching materials available to us.

Are you sure he has that authority, outside the Diocese of Rome? I'm not up on canon law to that extent.

We could use some lessons from our Orthodox brethren. They have no qualms about divesting themselves from unOrthodox bishops.

They’d throw theirs out for supporting “Humanae Vitae.” I don’t think we want to go there.

The Pope has full jurisdiction in the Latin Church.

I wish that he would excommunicate such as Mikulski, Pelosi and Biden just to set things straight.

The first thousand years of Church history shows that Rome was keeper of Orthodoxy. It wasn’t until we separated from the East that we started to screw up. We do need to use the Orthodox model in moving ourselves back to Orthodoxy. How many of our bishops are in heresy?
