a Pro-Life Nughtmare: Daschle Appointed as the new Secretary of Health And Human Services
Catholic Online ^ | 11-20-08 | Randy Sly

The appointment of Tom Daschle places a strong "pro-choice" leader at the helm of the agency that would oversee the possible Freedom of Choice Act.

WASHINGTON (Catholic Online) - President-elect Obama has made his choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services – former South Dakota Senator Tom Daschle. He had been a close advisor to President - Elect Obama during the presidential campaign and had recently written a book on his proposals to improve health care in America called "Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis."

The Department of Health and Human Services, Daschle’s new assignment, is the agency responsible for abortion policy. Should the Freedom of Choice Act be ratified, this is the department through which it would be administered. With Dascle's appointment it will be headed by a strong pro-choice supporter who also describes himself as a Catholic.

It wasn’t that many years ago that Tom Daschle was the pro-life movement’s worst congressional nightmare. Over the years, as a Senator and Senate Minority Leader, he constantly supported pro-choice legislation and initiatives.

In 1997, for example, Daschle proposed what he called a "compromise" regarding partial-birth abortion, banning the procedure while allowing exemptions for any woman who claimed mental or physical health reasons for having such a late-term procedure. Most saw this tactic as a smokescreen to guarantee the option to abort children by this grisly procedure akin to infanticide.

Describing himself as a Catholic, in 2003 the 61 year-old senator from South Dakota received a letter from Bishop Robert Carlson, the bishop of the Diocese of Sioux Falls, instructing the legislator to stop referring to himself in that manner.

As a result of November 4th, there will likely be another 35 years of Roe v Wade. It is time to try to change hearts, instead of laws.

It has always been a matter of changing hearts, my FRiend.

Perhaps that’s why the Lord gave us such an abominable, communistic government.

Our first order of business is to preach the gospel, not only in words, but in our lives, in the way we live, in the way we react to adversity and oppression, and in the way we defend the defenseless.

In the ensuing years, we may be called to put our lives on the line for at least one of these things.

Agree. Trying to change hearts is what I’ve always done, and what I’ll continue to do. The political arena is no longer the road to travel.

Don’t give up so easily you guys. I know, it’s not done easily. But, take heart. Pray to the Lord our God for mercy, guidance, discernment, and faith. May the Lord be with you, now and forever. V’s wife.

If the Catholic church would start excommunicating the catholics in name only and at the very least refusing to administer sacraments to those who support abortion and vote for those who support abortions, then you would see change.

Changing hearts really doesn't work. We have been trying to change hearts for 40 years and have been losing the fight.

Look, you have to understand what we are up against. The abortion rights people actually enjoy the death of the innocent.

They get pleasure from the thought that such killing is taking place.

You may want to treat them like they are human beings, but I think it's long over due to face facts and deal with them like they are a predatory alien species ~ not human at all.

Sure, we've got to be careful that we don't stretch the bounds of the law, but there's no reason whatsoever that we have to have any personal relationships with them, or even do business with them.

A full shunning is in order.

The leadership of the church, in failing to condemn Obama aggressively, was complicit in his election. V’s wife.

Agree that the Church must take stringer stands towards those who call themselves Catholic. They've begun speaking louder, but it's just been too little, too late for too many years. Their and our renewed attempts will change hearts eventually, especially with young Catholics. But it will be difficult, yes.

How galling it was to see a home on my street who for years has had a statue of the Blessed Mother out front. This election cycle there was an Obama yard sign right next to her. That speaks of nothing but ignorance of the faith. That is what the Church needs to change. And the Church cannot do that through legislation. I read somewhere that almost all regular church-attending Catholics voted for McCain. Those who do not attend regularly, or not at all, were Obama voters. Therein is the problem with the Catholic vote, I'd say. How to get them in, or back.

If what you say is true, all the more reason to pray and promote the culture of respect for life.

In today's America, the National Catholic Weekly there was an article entitled Daschle: Half Full or Half Empty?. I'd say, given Daschle's diminutive stature, it's just plain half.

Tom Daschle bobblehead, anyone?

Sure, fine, but at the same time these creatures have no intention of stopping with the unborn. They never have before and there's no reason to believe they will now.

We must prepare to defend ourselves in every possible way.

Why do you want them back? They never were there to begin with.

No, actually, there are many who have left the Church, precisely because they have guilt about abortion. They’ve had abortions, or have counseled to have abortions. They cannot yet forgive themselves, and do not know the power of God’s forgiveness.

Daschle is more concerned with his politics than with his “Catholic” faith. He will be chastized shortly I imagine. As he should be.

Catholics can just give up on changing the culture of abortion! WHY CARE ABOUT THE PRO LIFE MOVEMENT WHEN THE BISHOPS IN THE USA ARE NOT VOCAL SUPPORTERS OF THIS ISSUE!!

There are a handfull of Bishops who have stood up & gave their unequivocal case against Catholic Abortion Politicians!

The balance of the other 89 bishops wrote articles and signed documents in their support of the Pro Life Movement!

The other Bishops and Cardinals said and did nothing because they want to be invited To the secular progressive Political Events conducted by the PRO ABORTION OBAMA AND BIDEN AT THE WHITE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think neither one way or the other about them or their actions. That is something that they have to face. We all have to face up to our actions at some point. Every choice we make, good or bad, has consequences.

Catholics will never give up on changing the culture of death to the culture of life. Despite what you say, there are many more of us, Catholic, Christian and non-Christian who oppose abortion. This election was not a referendum on infanticide, thanks in large part to the MSM's purposefully taking it off the table.

If you think we are going away, you are very much mistaken.

Yes, bad choices have consequences. But the consequences of bad choices can lead to good choices. Forgiving oneself after asking for God’s forgiveness is a good choice.

Of course it will. But it will be an excuse to come out publicly against him.

Sen. Tom Daschle (D-SD) Catholic politician who votes for abortion in contradiction to Church teachings. One of American Life League's "Deadly Dozen."
