                                    Wednesday of the First Week in Lent

Jon 3:1-10

The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:
"Set out for the great city of Nineveh,
and announce to it the message that I will tell you."
So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh,
according to the LORD's bidding.
Now Nineveh was an enormously large city;
it took three days to go through it.
Jonah began his journey through the city,
and had gone but a single day's walk announcing,
"Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed,"
when the people of Nineveh believed God;
they proclaimed a fast
and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.

When the news reached the king of Nineveh,
he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe,
covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes.
Then he had this proclaimed throughout Nineveh,
by decree of the king and his nobles:
"Neither man nor beast, neither cattle nor sheep,
shall taste anything;
they shall not eat, nor shall they drink water.
Man and beast shall be covered with sackcloth and call loudly to God;
every man shall turn from his evil way
and from the violence he has in hand.
Who knows, God may relent and forgive, and withhold his blazing wrath,
so that we shall not perish."
When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way,
he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them;
he did not carry it out.

Lk 11:29-32

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
"This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and there is something greater than Jonah here."

Pray a Rosary each day for our nation.

Pray the Rosary

1.  Sign of the Cross:  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

2.  The Apostles Creed:  I BELIEVE in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

3.  The Lord's Prayer:  OUR Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

4. (3) Hail Mary:  HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen. (Three times)

5. Glory Be:  GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Fatima Prayer: Oh, my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of your mercy.

Announce each mystery, then say 1 Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, 1 Glory Be and 1 Fatima prayer.  Repeat the process with each mystery.

End with the Hail Holy Queen:

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve! To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears! Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus!

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

March Devotion: Saint Joseph

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Due to the solemnity of Saint Joseph on March 19, this month is devoted to this great saint, the foster father of Christ. "It greatly behooves Christians, while honoring the Virgin Mother of God, constantly to invoke with deep piety and confidence her most chaste spouse, Saint Joseph. We have a well grounded conviction that such is the special desire of the Blessed Virgin herself." --Pope Leo XIII

FOR OUR WORK
Glorious Saint Joseph, pattern of all who are devoted to toil, obtain for me the grace to toil in the spirit of penance, in order thereby to atone for my many sins; to toil conscientiously, putting devotion to duty before my own inclinations; to labor with thankfulness and joy, deeming it an honor to employ and to develop, by my labor, the gifts I have received from Almighty God; to work with order, peace, moderation, and patience, without ever shrinking from weariness and difficulties; to work above all with a pure intention and with detachment from self, having always before my eyes the hour of death and the accounting which I must then render of time ill-spent, of talents unemployed, of good undone, and of my empty pride in success, which is so fatal to the work of God. St. Joseph
St. Joseph was an ordinary manual laborer although descended from the royal house of David. In the designs of Providence he was destined to become the spouse of the Mother of God. His high privilege is expressed in a single phrase, "Foster-father of Jesus." About him Sacred Scripture has little more to say than that he was a just man-an expression which indicates how faithfully he fulfilled his high trust of protecting and guarding God's greatest treasures upon earth, Jesus and Mary.

The darkest hours of his life may well have been those when he first learned of Mary's pregnancy; but precisely in this time of trial Joseph showed himself great. His suffering, which likewise formed a part of the work of the redemption, was not without great providential import: Joseph was to be, for all times, the trustworthy witness of the Messiah's virgin birth. After this, he modestly retires into the background of holy Scripture.

Of St. Joseph's death the Bible tells us nothing. There are indications, however, that he died before the beginning of Christ's public life. His was the most beautiful death that one could have, in the arms of Jesus and Mary. Humbly and unknown, he passed his years at Nazareth, silent and almost forgotten he remained in the background through centuries of Church history. Only in more recent times has he been accorded greater honor. Liturgical veneration of St. Joseph began in the fifteenth century, fostered by Sts. Brigid of Sweden and Bernadine of Siena. St. Teresa, too, did much to further his cult.

At present there are two major feasts in his honor. On March 19 our veneration is directed to him personally and to his part in the work of redemption, while on May 1 we honor him as the patron of workmen throughout the world and as our guide in the difficult matter of establishing equitable norms regarding obligations and rights in the social order.

St. Joseph is invoked as patron for many causes. He is the patron of the Universal Church. He is the patron of the dying because Jesus and Mary were at his death-bed. He is also the patron of fathers, of carpenters, and of social justice. Many religious orders and communities are placed under his patronage.

Prayer to St. Joseph

Pope Pius X composed this prayer to St. Joseph, patron of working people, that expresses concisely the Christian attitude toward labor. It summarizes also for us the lessons of the Holy Family's work at Nazareth.

Jonah preaches repentance in Nineveh


[1] Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, [2] “Arise,
go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” [3]
So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now
Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth. [4] Jonah
began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he cried, “Yet forty days,
and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”

The people of Nineveh do penance


[5] And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and put on
sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

[6] Then tidings reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, re-
moved his robe, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. [7] And
he made proclamation and published through Nineveh, “By the decree of the king
and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them
not feed, or drink water, [8] but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and
let them cry mightily to God; yea, let every one turn from his evil way and from the
violence which is in his hands. [9] Who knows, God may yet repent and turn from
his fierce anger, so that we perish not?”

[10] When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God re-
pented of the evil which he had said he would do to them; and he did not do it.

Commentary:

3:1-4:11. The second part of the book has a similar structure to the first – God
and Jonah (3:1-3; cf. 1:1-3); Jonah and Gentiles (3:4-10; cf. 1:4-16); Jonah and
God (4:1-11; cf. 1:17-2:10). However, the reader is now psychologically prepared
for what will happen: Jonah’s preaching will produce the desired result and the
Ninevites will be converted. So, the story is geared to the last chapter which
poses and solves the question that chapter 3 provokes. The episode described in
this second part is therefore a practical illustration of the scope of God’s mercy.
It was used as such in the debate with the Gnostics who argued that there was
a difference between the good God (the God revealed in the New Testament) and
the God revealed in the Old Testament: “See how the stress is laid on the great-
est name and quality of God, his Mercy; that is, God is patient with evildoers,
and rich in mercy and compassion for those who recognize their faults and repent
them, as the Ninevites did. If such a Being as he is so good, you […] have to
admit that he can do no evil for, as Marcion himself once said, a good tree cannot
bear bad fruit” (Tertullian, Adversus Marcionem, 2, 24).

3:1-4. God renews his command to Jonah. And this time Jonah obeys. Maybe
the vows he promised to fulfil in 2:9 had to do with this – going to preach in Nine-
veh. Anyway, the success of his mission is assured, because it depends not on
Jonah but on the Lord: it would take three days to cross Nineveh (v. 3), but he
has only gone one day in his journey and the people convert (cf. 3:5).

3:5-10. The account of the conversion of the Ninevites looks like a straight copy
from other biblical passages, particularly from the prophet Jeremiah: Jeremiah
is the “prophet to the nations” (Jer 1:5), and Jonah is sent to the archetypal
Gentile city. There are many little things in this passage that are reminiscentof
Jeremiah: in the book of Jeremiah, Jerusalem is called the “great city”, which is
what Nineveh is called here (1:2; 3:2; cf. Jer 22:8-9), and both books have similar
turns of phrase such as “let every one turn from his evil way”, and “man and
beast”, “from the greatest to the least” (3:5, 8; cf. Jer 6:14; 8:10; 36:3, 7), etc.
This passage is particularly reminiscent of the call for a fast made by Jeremiah in
the time of King Jehoiakim; in Jeremiah 36 we are told how the prophet warned of
misfortunes to come and proclaimed a fast for conversion (Jer 36:9), but the king
refused to listen. Jonah, too, announces the destruction of Nineveh, but it is the
Ninevites themselves who proclaim a general fast, as if God were speaking
through them. Their own king establishes what the fast will involve, and he issues
a decree that sounds just like something a prophet would have said (vv. 7-9); cf.
Joel 2:12-14). Furthermore, the king of the Ninevites seems to be quite familiar
with biblical teaching, for he is well aware (cf. Jer 36:3, 9) that displays of penance
will not automatically stay God’s hand; the king has a genuine change of heart
and is ready to submit to God (v. 9), and when God sees that these people are
ready to mend their ways, he revokes his decision to punish them (v. 10). The
episode bears out Jeremiah’s teaching about repentance (cf. Jer 18:7-8).

The difference between the Ninevites and the Israelites can be seen in the use
that Jesus makes of this passage when he compares his Jewish contemporaries
with their ancestors: “The men of Nineveh will arise at the judgment with this
generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and be-
hold, something greater than Jonah is here” (Mt 12:41). It is not surprising, then,
that in Christian tradition, the Ninevites are referred to as a model of repentance:
“Let us cast our minds back over the history of men, and see how the Lord, in one
generation after another, granted a time of penance to those who desired to be
converted to him. Noah preached salvation, and those who listened to him were
saved. Jonah told the Ninevites that their city would be destroyed, and they re-
pented of their sins and asked God for forgiveness and were saved by the power
of their pleading, even though they were not part of the chosen people” (St
Clement of Rom, Ad Corinthios, 7, 5-7).

And another text by a great Father of the Eastern Church says: “Do not dwell
on how little time you have, but on the love of the Master. The inhabitants of
Nineveh cooled God’s wrath in three days. They did not despair at how little time
was left to them; their troubled souls won over the goodness of the Master, and
he brought about their salvation” (St John Chrysostom, De incomprehensibile Dei
natura, 6).

Commentary:

29-32. Jonah was the prophet who led the Ninevites to do penance: his actions
and preaching they saw as signifying that God had sent him (cf. note on Matthew
12:41-42).

[Note on Matthew 12:41-42 states:

41-42. Nineveh was a city in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) to which the prophet
Jonah was sent. The Ninevites did penance (John 3:6-9) because they recog-
nized the prophet and accepted his message; whereas Jerusalem does not wish
to recognize Jesus, of whom Jonah was merely a figure. The queen of the South
was the queen of Sheba in southwestern Arabia, who visited Solomon (1 Kings
10:1-10) and was in awe of the wisdom with which God had endowed the King
of Israel. Jesus is also prefigured in Solomon, whom Jewish tradition saw as
the epitome of the wise man. Jesus’ reproach is accentuated by the example
of pagan converts, and gives us a glimpse of the universal scope of Christianity,
which will take root among the Gentiles.

There is a certain irony in what Jesus says about “something greater” than Jonah
or Solomon having come: really, He is infinitely greater, but Jesus prefers to tone
down the difference between Himself and any figure, no matter how important, in
the Old Testament.]

Psalm 51 is a plea to God for forgiveness after David slept with Bathsheba, the beautiful wife of Uriah, one of his soldiers who was off at war. Bathsheba became pregnant and David had Uriah killed so he could marry her. The prophet Nathan forced David to face his sin. God later caused the baby boy to die, to David and Bathsheba’s grief, but allowed another baby to be born to them, whom they named... Solomon!

Circumcision of the heart
Law and covenant have been entirely changed. God changed the first pact with Adam, and gave a new one to Noah. He gave another to Abraham, and changed this to give a new one to Moses. When the covenant with Moses was no longer observed, he gave another pact in this last age, a pact never again to be changed.
  He established a new law for Adam, that he could not eat of the tree of life. He gave to Noah the sign of the rainbow in the clouds. He then gave Abraham, chosen for his faith, the mark and seal of circumcision for his descendants. Moses was given the Passover lamb, the propitiation for the people.
  All these covenants were different from each other. Moreover, the circumcision that is approved by the giver of those covenants is the kind of spoken of by Jeremiah: Circumcise your hearts. If God’s pact with Abraham was firm, so also is this covenant firm and trustworthy, nor can any other law be laid down, whether it originates outside the law or among those subject to the law.
  God gave Moses a law together with his prescriptions and precepts, and when it was no longer kept, he made the law and its precepts of no avail. He promised a new covenant, different from the first, though the giver of both is one and the same. This is the covenant that he promised: All shall know me from the least to the greatest. In this covenant there is no longer any circumcision of the flesh, any seal upon the people.
  We know, dearly beloved, that God established different laws in different generations which were in force as long as it pleased him. Afterward they were made obsolete. In the words of the apostle: In former times the kingdom of God existed in each generation under different signs.
  Moreover, our God is truthful and his commandments are most trustworthy. Every covenant was proved firm and trustworthy in its own time, and those who have been circumcised in heart are brought to life and receive a second circumcision beside the true Jordan, the waters of baptism that bring forgiveness of sins.
  Jesus, son of Nun, renewed the people’s circumcision with a knife of stone when he had crossed the Jordan with the Israelites. Jesus, our Saviour, renews the circumcision of the heart for the nations who have believed in him and are washed by baptism: circumcision by the sword of his word, sharper than any two-edged sword.
  Jesus, son of Nun, led the people across the Jordan into the promised land. Jesus, our Saviour, has promised the land of the living to all who have crossed the true Jordan, and have believed and are circumcised in heart.
  Blessed, then, are those who are circumcised in heart, and have been reborn in water through the second circumcision. They will receive their inheritance with Abraham, the faithful leader and father of all nations, for his faith was credited to him for righteousness.

Look with favour, Lord, on your people’s devotion.
  May our abstinence keep our bodies in good order,

He was the son of King Casimir IV and Queen Elizabeth, monarchs of Poland and Lithuania. In contrast to he other members ofthe royal court, he was a shining example of faith, piety, humilty, and chasity. He had a great love for the Eucharist and for the Virgin Mary. He is the patron saint of Poland and Lithuania.

St. Casimir, to whom the Poles gave the title of "The Peace-maker," was the third of the thirteen children of Casimir IV, King of Poland, and of Elizabeth of Austria, daughter of the Emperor Albert II. ...Devout from his infancy, the boy gave himself up to devotion and penance, and had a horror of anything approaching softness or self-indulgence. His bed was often the ground, and he was wont to spend a great part of the night in prayer and meditation, chiefly on the passion of our Saviour. His clothes were plain, and under them he wore a hairshirt. Living always in the presence of God, he was invariably serene and cheerful, and pleasant to all. The saint's love of God showed itself in his love of the poor who are Christ's members, and for the relief of these the young prince gave all he possessed, using in their behalf the influence he had with his father and with his brother Ladislaus when he became king of Bohemia. In honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Casimir frequently recited the long Latin hymn "Omni die dic Mariae," a copy of which was by his desire buried with him. This hymn, part of which is familiar to us through Bittleston's version, "Daily, daily sing to Mary," is not uncommonly called the Hymn of St Casimir, but it was certainly not composed by him; it is three centuries older than his time.

The nobles of Hungary, dissatisfied with their king, Matthias Corvinus, in 1471 begged the King of Poland to allow them to place his son Casimir on the throne. The saint, at that time not fifteen years old, was very unwilling to consent, but in obedience to his father he went to the frontier at the head of an army. There, hearing that Matthias had himself assembled a large body of troops, and finding that his own soldiers were deserting in large numbers because they could not get their pay, he decided upon the advice of his officers to return home. The knowledge that Pope Sixtus IV had sent an embassy to his father to deter him from the expedition made the young prince carry out his resolution with the firmer conviction that he was acting rightly. King Casimir, however, was greatly incensed at the failure of his ambitious projects and would not permit his son to return to Cracow, but relegated him to the castle of Dobzki. The young man obeyed and remained in confinement there for three months. Convinced of the injustice of the war upon which he had so nearly embarked, and determined to have no further part in these internecine conflicts which only facilitated the further progress into Europe of the Turks, St Casimir could never again be persuaded to take up arms though urged to do so by his father and invited once more by the disaffected Hungarian magnates. He returned to his studies and his prayers, though for a time he was viceroy in Poland during an absence of his father. An attempt was made to induce him to marry a daughter of the Emperor Frederick III, but he refused to relax the celibacy he had imposed on himself.

St Casimir's austerities did nothing to help the lung trouble from which he suffered, and he died at the age of twenty-six in 1484 and was buried at Vilna, where his relics still rest in the church of St Stanislaus. Miracles were reported at his tomb, and he was canonized in 1521.

The Word Among Us

Meditation: Luke 11:29-32

Superstitious people tend to live by signs. If their elevator stops on the thirteenth floor, they will expect bad luck.

If their horoscope urges caution, they won’t go outside that day. If they find a four-leaf clover or see a cloud shaped a certain way, they might feel good about a particular decision. All this may sound innocent enough, but if you think about it, it’s really based on fear. Superstitious people can’t do anything without a sign. And when they do take action, quite often it is based on something irrational.

The crowd Jesus is talking to had a similar problem. Looking into their hearts, he saw that many of them were seeking a sign, not so that they could bolster their faith but so that they could simply feel better. It’s as if they were trying to make Jesus into a supernatural “good-luck charm” who would magically transform their lives without requiring much from them. And so Jesus responded to them sternly, not out of cruelty but compassion. He saw that these people were missing the greatest sign of all—himself—and that in missing him, they remained bound in their fears.

The truth is, we’ve all sought signs at times, and for different reasons. Sometimes we want a confirmation that the path we’ve chosen is really the best one. Sometimes we just need to know that God is with us—and we hope for some kind of miracle to prove it. True, God does love to help us out, and sometimes in spectacular ways. But he also wants us to grow in faith by acting on what he has already given us. He wants us to place our trust in him rather than in any display of his power.

Signs are a good thing. They help our faith. But we already have received thousands of signs, with Jesus’ cross and resurrection at the head of the list! You don’t need another absolutely undoubtable sign or miracle to convince us to trust in the Lord—you’ve already received one! You have been given a living relationship with the Son of God. So go ahead and ask him for whatever you need. But be sure as well to believe that whatever the outcome, he has promised to remain with you always (Matthew 28:20).

“Thank you, Lord, for rising from the dead and standing at the Father’s right hand, interceding for me. You are all I need!”

GREG. NYSS.. Now as she was queen of the Ethiopians' and in a far distant country, so in the beginning the Church of the Gentiles was in darkness, and far off from the knowledge of God. But when Christ the Prince of peace shone forth, the Jews being still in darkness, thither came the Gentiles, and offered to Christ the frankincense of piety, the gold of divine knowledge, and precious stones, that is, obedience to His commands.

THEOPHYL. CHRYS. The judgment of condemnation comes from men like or unlike to those who are condemned. From like, for instance, as in the parable of the ten virgins, but from unlike, when the Ninevites condemn those who lived at the time of Christ, that so their condemnation might be the more remarkable. For the Ninevites indeed were barbarians, but these Jews. The one enjoying the prophetic teaching, the other having never received the divine word. To the former came a servant, to the latter the Master, of whom the one foretold destruction, the other preached the kingdom of heaven. To all men then was it known that the Jews ought rather to have believed, but the contrary happened; therefore he adds, For they repented at the preaching of Jonas, and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

AMBROSE; Now in a mystery, the Church consists of two things, either ignorance of sin, which has reference mainly to the queen of the South, or ceasing to sin, which relates indeed to the repentant Ninevites. For repentance blots out the offense, wisdom guards against it.

AUG. Luke indeed relates this in the same place as Matthew, but in a somewhat different order. But who does not see that it is an idle question, in what order our Lord said those things, seeing that we ought to learn by the most precious authority of the Evangelist, that there is no falsehood. But not every man will repeat another's words in the same order in which they proceeded from his mouth, seeing that the order itself makes no difference with respect to the fact, whether it be so or not.

I can't resist adding a word about this portrait of Saint Mary of Egypt by Spanish painter Jusepe de Ribera, also known as Lo Spagnoletto. Ribera came to Naples in search of Caravaggio in 1609, but Caravaggio had just died. Ribera's Mary of Egypt is emaciated and hollow-cheeked. Her once voluptuous body is wrinkled and weatherbeaten. She stands in prayer against the landscape of her conversion: the desert. There is even a certain resemblance between the saint and the skull on the ledge in front of her. The broken loaf of bread is a symbol of the Word of God, recalling the saying of Our Lord in the desert: "Not in bread alone doth man live, but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God" (Mt 4:4).

Indolence

Lent is supposed to be unsettling. Lent is supposed to disrupt our routines. Lent is about entering into another rhythm of life, a rhythm different from the one by which we ordinarily organize our lives. The unwillingness to be disturbed, to make a change, even a very little one, in what has become customary reveals an underlying resistance to the grace of conversion.

Newman speaks of indolence. Indolence is a state of sluggishness; it is the habit of seeking to avoid exertion. The indolent person says, "I am quite comfortable with things as they are, thank you. I have neither the desire nor the need to change my routines, to displace myself, or to do anything differently from the way I have always done it." Indolence is incompatible with Lent.

Alacrity

The opposite of indolence is alacrity -- a very Benedictine virtue -- an eager willingness to get up and get moving. The dictionary defines alacrity as a "cheerful readiness, promptness, or willingness." When Saint Benedict treats of Lenten penances in Chapter Forty-Nine of the Rule, he says that they are to be offered "spontaneously in the joy of the Holy Spirit." There is in this something of the quickfooted and swift obedience of Chapter Five of the Rule, an obedience that brooks no delays.

Sackcloth and Ashes

In today's gospel Our Lord gives us two examples of alacrity in penitence: that of the Ninevites and that of the Queen of Sheba. The Ninevites wasted no time in responding to Jonah's preaching. He had gone but a day's journey into the city, preaching repentance, when the people of Nineveh believed God. "They proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them" (Jon 4:5).

Jonah's message completely disrupted things as they were. Word of it reached the ears of the king. "He arose from his throne, removed his robe, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes" (Jon 4:6). A dramatic departure from routine! The king proclaimed a fast affecting not only the people of the city, but even their beasts, their herds, and their flocks. The Ninevites are to put on sackcloth, but so too are their beasts. The image of a sheep, a goat, or a cow wearing sackcloth is almost too amusing; clearly it signifies a departure from business as usual. The extraordinary thing is that this public penitence is done with alacrity, in prompt obedience to Jonah's preaching. Nothing is said of a town meeting to discuss and decide what response might be appropriate. Jonah's message is pressing and it is urgent that the people of Nineveh waste no time in talk, lest the judgment of God overtake them.

Change of Habit

Think for a moment of the social and economic effects of this very public change of behaviour. Nothing is as it was before. Shopkeepers cry mightily to God in their deserted shops; the king sits in ashes; there is nothing in the stewpot, no fragrance of bread baking, none of the reassuring sights and sounds of ordinary life. Everyone from the greatest to the least feels hunger. In the streets one hears the braying of donkeys and the bleating of sheep. People and beasts even look different; putting on sackcloth is, both literally and figuratively, a change of habit. The Ninevites oblige me to admit that if Lent has not yet disrupted my life and changed my routines, I have not yet begun to observe it.

The Queen of Sheba

The second example of alacrity given us by Jesus is that of the Queen of Sheba. Her change in routine is enormous. She is anything but indolent. Eager to "hear the wisdom of Solomon" (Lk 11:31), she sets out on a long and difficult journey, leaving behind the comfort and security of things familiar. "At the judgment," says Jesus, "the queen of the South will arise with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold something greater than Solomon is here" (Lk 11:31).

Seven Days Into Lent

Concretely, we are obliged today to ask ourselves, after seven days of Lenten observance, to what extent we have allowed our little routines to be unsettled and changed. If Lent has not disrupted my life -- literally, caused a break in things as they are and have been -- I have not yet entered into its grace. Lent is a disruptive grace. Disruptive? One may find the word harsh: to disrupt means to break apart. And yet, there is no avoiding it: the healing of the heart begins in its being broken apart. Broken routines can be the first step in owning the brokenness of our hearts and in bringing them before God in a penitence that is not just theoretical but real. "The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not spurn" (Ps 50:17).

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here. At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

Introductory Prayer: Lord Jesus, I believe in you because you are the truth itself and you reveal to me more and more the meaning and purpose of my life. I trust in you because every day you are there waiting for me, knocking at my door, always ready to forgive, always ready to draw me close to you in prayer and the sacraments. I love you because you gave your entire self for me on the Cross and taught me what it means to fulfill myself in love.

Petition: Holy Spirit, help me be attentive to the many daily signs of your presence and love.

1. Never Quite Satisfied. Jesus has already given sight to the blind, healed many paralytics, raised the dead and cast out demons. Yet there are those who are still not convinced. They ask for yet another sign. Their real problem lies not in insufficient signs, but in hearts unwilling to accept the truth. When there is resistance or inconformity with God’s will, it is not really signs we need or should seek, but a change of heart and a willingness to accept what Christ is already telling and showing us. Looking for signs often arises not because God is hidden, but because we want to hear something else. The cause could be fear, selfishness or a lack of spiritual depth. The result is always dissatisfaction, insecurity and defensiveness. And the solution is always the same: Purify my heart, change my criteria, and let go of what I secretly want to hear. Let Christ reign supreme and accept him on his terms.

2. The Sign of Jonah. Nineveh converted at the preaching of Jonah, did penance, and averted their destruction. Jonah’s message resounded profoundly throughout the great city, and everyone, from lowest citizen to the king himself, did penance and changed their ways. Jonah’s preaching was a sign of God’s judgment and their impending destruction, but also of God’s mercy and the abundant opportunities he affords for change and salvation. God does not desire the death of the sinner, but that the sinner change and be saved. Jonah and the Ninevites show that sin in itself is never an obstacle to the path of God. God can forgive and make the sinner a saint. The problem lies rather in attachment to sin and in the resistance to change and belief.

3. The Queen of the South and the Citizens of Nineveh. I have received innumerable graces from God and incomparable blessings. What fruits of repentance and change have I allowed this grace to produce? Who knows if those I look down on would not be farther along on the path of holiness had they received the blessings and opportunities God has given me. Many others have done more with less. Humility, compunction and gratitude with God are more in order than that hidden pride, self-sufficiency and conceit I at times feel. I need to strive to show the fruits of repentance every day.

Conversation with Christ:Lord Jesus, thank you for your warning and your wake-up call. Help me have heartfelt humility, recognizing my need for change. Help me not to look so much at how good I am, as at how much I can improve. Teach me the humility of truth.

Resolution: I will not compare myself with others today, but seek the highest degree of generosity and correspondence with God’s grace.

Your Patterns Can Free You or Numb Your Soul

It’s fascinating to look at how we actually spend our days. For the most part the patterns, whatever they are, are remarkably stable and unvarying. We rise at a certain time, and wander through our morning rituals with barely a thought about them. And so goes the day.

In many ways our rituals and habits are a good thing: they let us accomplish all sorts of routine but necessary tasks without demanding anything of our brains, which thus can be free for far more interesting things. But the key phrase there is ‘can be free,’ for all too often nothing is going on in our brains and all we have are our routines — mind-numbing ruts of repetition.

Complacency and stagnation are perpetual hazards for every human being. They can deprive us of life’s richness, and they can leave us blind victims of the unhealthy and destructive patterns that may be emerging in our daily living.

In today’s Old Testament reading, Jonah threatens the Ninevites with destruction from the heavens if they don’t repent and change their ways. In fact, we don’t have to wait for fire and brimstone from the heavens, for the destruction comes from within when we have chosen wrong paths and have sinned. What we ought to fear is being so brain dead that we don’t even notice what’s happening as we proceed in our self-destruction.

Now is the time to open our eyes, turn on our brains, and look closely at the patterns in our lives. Re-pent means re-think, and there’s no better time for that than Lent.

When the Lord called Jonah to preach repentance to the Ninevites, Jonah disobeyed and ran away to Tarshish. After spending three days in the belly of a whale, Jonah reconsidered and went to Nineveh. He obeyed God, but according to the letter of the law, not its spirit (see 2 Cor 3:6). His heart wasn't in it. He didn't want the Ninevites to repent and be saved.

We sometimes obey God when our hearts are not in it. Some don't commit adultery only because they fear the consequences or don't have the opportunity. They're obeying the letter of the law but not its spirit. God's word says: "Like a eunuch lusting for intimacy with a maiden is he who does right under compulsion" (Sir 20:3).

Many people go to Mass on Sunday only because it's their "Sunday obligation." This is good, but the Lord calls us to a deep personal relationship with Him. Many businesses avoid expressing racism because they don't want to be taken to court or get bad publicity, while the CEOs of these businesses remain prejudiced.

T.S. Eliot said: "The greatest treason is to do the right thing for the wrong reason" (Murder in the Cathedral). Obey both the letter and spirit of the law.

 
Prayer: Father, may my love for You motivate my every action and decision (2 Cor 5:14).
Promise: "At the judgment, the citizens of Nineveh will rise along with the present generation, and they will condemn it. For at the preaching of Jonah they reformed, but you have a greater than Jonah here." —Lk 11:32
Praise: St. Casimir gave up the prospect of marriage to royalty in order to follow God's prompting to celibacy.
