Do you believe that the sanctity of marriage is more honored in the Catholic Church than in “most Protestant denominations”?

By official Church policy, yes. However, among those that actually practice their Catholic or Protestant faiths I think it equally low, and among those that don't practice it is equally high.

Actually, as much as I like to whine and nit-pick, that's not a bad answer.

Although I am a Catholic I really don't think God really cares that much about which pew we sit in or which hymn we sing on Sunday. It is how we live our lives in His image and how we treat each other the rest of the week that really counts.

My concern about Mr. Gingrich's announced coming to Christ is his sincerity. If he has accepted Christ as his Savior and feels he can be closer to Him in the Catholic faith, great.

But Mr. Gingrich has stood before the alter before when, as it turns out, he apparently had his fingers crossed.

The Church's foundation is redemption so we will have to take Newt at face value until he proves otherwise.

OK, but he is now living with his third wife. Are there any of the other Sacraments which don’t apply in his case? For instance, could he deny the True Presence and still join the Church?

“so we have an illegal alien communist president and you’re worried about newt. right.”

ckilmer, do you realize that if Newt would have gotten his way, ALL illegal aliens would be given amnesty?

I know he’s talked a good game the last few months, but he’s surrounded by open border advocates. A couple years ago they and Newt penned a letter to the WSJ advancing Bush’s amnesty. And his record on immigration...NOT good. In 1998 the Georgia delegation demanded that the Clinton admin stop workplace raids for aliens.

The Church will make an adequate judgment as to the credibility of his confession and repentance. I trust them far more than the politically and theologically motivated snipers on FR.

I have real doubts about Mr. Gingrich’s ethics and morality, but I hope his conversion is sincere and he is doing this for reasons that are spiritual rather than political.

What I wonder is why is Mr. Gingrich getting brought into the Church before the Easter Vigil? Why should he be treated differently than any other RCIA candidate?

I’m not worried about Newt. I would take ANY Republican (except maybe Specter, Snowe, or Collins)over what we have right now. I was commenting on Ronald Reagan’s marital status.

Who said I’m worried about Newt?

We have a communist in the WH and you are worried about other people’s comments?

See how that line of thinking works?

I hope you’re right. But note that there’s also a thread up today under the title “Gingrich floats possibility of 2012 Presidential Run”.

AuntB

you have been around for awhile. You have made a lot of good posts.

Newt is not as good as Duncan Hunter. However, he has been pro border control for several years. And certainly his position has changed since the 1990s. But if you want to go back decades Ronald Reagan’s amnesty of 1986 was considered by the Mexicans to be a surrender document on the border issue.

This has nothing to do with Hunter. Look at Newt’s record. Did you read his pro amnesty letter to the WSJ? He and his georgia collegues STOPPED interior enforcement.

I don’t trust him.

Oh, I missed the “flat joke everyone has to make” memo, too.

You had your chance to be fashionable, and you blew it.
