RON HOWARD LIES ABOUT “ANGELS & DEMONS”

April 21, 2009

Ron Howard, director of “Angels & Demons,” the movie version of Dan Brown’s book by that name, attacked Catholic League president Bill Donohue yesterday on the Huffington Post.

Referring to a booklet on the movie that Donohue authored, “Angels & Demons: More Demonic than Angelic,” (click here) Howard wrote: “Mr. Donohue’s booklet accuses us of lying when our movie trailer says the Catholic Church ordered a brutal massacre to silence the Illuminati centuries ago. It would be a lie if we had ever suggested our movie is anything other than a work of fiction….” Howard also said that “most in the hierarchy of the Church” will enjoy his film; he denies being anti-Catholic.

Donohue responded today:

“Dan Brown says in his book that the Illuminati are ‘factual’ and that they were ‘hunted ruthlessly by the Catholic Church.’ In the film’s trailer, Tom Hanks, who plays the protagonist Robert Langdon, says ‘The Catholic Church ordered a brutal massacre to silence them forever.’ Howard concurs: ‘The Illuminati were formed in the 1600s. They were artists and scientists like Galileo and Bernini, whose progressive ideas threatened the Vatican.’

“All of this is a lie. The Illuminati were founded in 1776 and were dissolved in 1787. It is obvious that Galileo and Bernini could not possibly have been members: Galileo died in 1647 and Bernini passed away in 1680. More important, the Catholic Church never hunted, much less killed, a single member of the Illuminati. But this hasn’t stopped Brown from asserting that ‘It is a historical fact that the Illuminati vowed vengeance against the Vatican in the 1600s.’ (My emphasis.)

“Howard must be delusional if he thinks Vatican officials are going to like his propaganda—they denied him the right to film on their grounds. Moreover, we know from a Canadian priest who hung out with Howard’s crew last summer in Rome (dressed in civilian clothes) just how much they hate Catholicism. It’s time to stop the lies and come clean.”

Bill Donohue is one of my favorite people. He doesn’t give a da*n about PC from a hole in the wall. He just tells it like he sees it...so rare today.

There is always talk of how the Catholic Church stopped this or that advancement.

This book tells the truth

Many don’t care about truth.

Those “itching ears” are eager to believe what they wish.

Jesus Christ gave Peter the keys and said that Hell would not prevail against his church... people have to decide whether they get their truth from THE CHURCH or Opie.

Yep, Bill D. is one of the only conservatives who punches back, instead of apologizing for putting his nose in the way of fists.

I don’t really think Brown meant for people to take his garbage seriously. It is just a novel.

If that were true, I'd have no problem with it. But that's not how it was described and promoted.

Donohue's got his history right, right!?

Well, yes and no.

The Bavarian Illuminati he references indeed functioned as an organization during the period he discusses.

However, the Illuminati identified with and considered themselves descended from various earlier masonic and anti-Church movements such as the Fratecelli, Rosicrucians, Albigensians, etc.

The Church did indeed massacre some of these movements.

Whether the quote from the movie is historically accurate would depend to some extent on the context of the discussion.

Given the general lack of interest in historical accuracy in Brown's writing, I'd be quite surprised if it is accurate.

It’s time to stop the lies and come clean.

That's what Max Baer said too.

I dont know much about the Illuminati, but I think that Hollywood is going to make films depicting whatever makes them feel good...

Who needs facts or history ???

They get in the way of “art”

The illuminati are one link in a much longer chain of secret orders rumored to date back to the age of Horus and possibly beyond and all sharing various common aspects, namely the pursuit and sharing of scientific knowledge which, ultimaely, became a threat to the status quo i.e. the church. There is no doubt that the Catholic church sought to quash their endeavors through both non-violence and violence when the threat became intolerable. The Catholic church of the time was much more involved in the day to day life of men and women back then. Undermining their hegemony was considered blasphemy/satanic/sorcery/witchcraft/heresy/etc and was punishable by death and torture. I don’t find it difficult to believe that a crusade was ordered against the illuminati although it is more likely that this is fictional reference to the earlier crusade waged against the Templar Knights by order of King Phillip prior to their involvment with the ancient and accepted scottish right. The illuminati have always remained a bit of an enigma within the grand scheme of free masonry (at least to me). Their involvement with Templars seems highly likely but their Raison d’être remains something of a mystery.

Hey Ron, if you are so gutsy and open minded, why not bring The Satanic Verses to the big screen?

In charity, I must say that you are sadly misinformed. The Catholic Church has not been been involved in these cabals that you reference. Secular powers, seeking to clothe themselves in the cloak of Religion, have done so, multiple times.

The two are not the self and same iterations.

God bless.

I’m not misinformed about anything in which you are referring to. I think maybe you misunderstood what I wrote actually.

The Illumini were want to associate their cult with any organization that vaguely resembled theirs. It was part of the freemasons who in Catholic countries were bitterly opposed to the Church. They freely made stuff up. The utopian socialists of the early 19th Century copied them, including their rituals.
