I made an error last night, and asked the moderator to delete that error. I thank the moderator, but I must ask the moderator and the Religion Forum freepers for a little more patience, because my conscience requires that I do more than remove the falsity; I must correct it.
I was scandalized over the past few days to hear local news reports that Joseph Biden was receiving an honorary degree at Georgetown. These reports were false. I'm not 100% positive they explicitly stated Biden would receive a degree; they might have said something more like, "While the controversy still rages over Notre Dame's awarding of an honorary degree to President Obama, Georgetown's Law School has announced it will honor Vice President Obama." I should have made certain I had my story straight, especially before leaping to shocked inferences about the motives of Georgetown President John DiGioia.
The honors are not coming from the Law School, officially. While it is still an outrage that this is permitted by the university, it's not as if DiGioia himself approved of the honors, as he would have to do were it an honorary degree. Therefore, it is not such a purposely disobedient act against the church as I interpreted it to be. (I compared it to giving the Church the finger.)
In some ways, the actual events are a graver illness. It is sponsored by advocates for abortion (N.O.W.) and the Georgetown University Law Center's Journal of Gender and Law. That such a journal that would partner up with pro-abortion advocates to push abortion would exist at Georgetown is an abomination before God, but DiGioia's sin is possibly merely one of cowardice and omission, not the direct purposeful assault on the body of Christ as I had inferred.
If you're wondering how that statement fits into an apology: My apology is to Free Republic, who is owed the truth and accuracy, not hot-headed outrage. It's also to Archbishop Donald Wuerl, who does not, in fact, have a specific grievance to strip Georgetown's faculties. I certainly do wish he'd do more to demand that Georgetown uphold the truth, but who knows what he does discretely.
Narses, could you please send a message of my regret to your ping list? Thank you.
You didn’t ping Narses...

Obama Says A Baby Is A Punishment
Obama: If they make a mistake, I dont want them punished with a baby.
It’s good to get your facts straight.
However, if it were not the policy of GTown to permit these things, the campus organization would not have done it. And if Wuerl had not been so silent on all of these things, GTown would not have done it. The local ordinary does indeed have some power, even over a religious order, and while he could not perhaps have stopped this, his disapproval might have attracted some attention.
Apologize for any errors, but not for the substance of your post. You were right, and they need to hear this.
Well, it’s good to correct the record. But Georgetown is perhaps the worst offender against Catholic principles and teachings of any Jesuit University in the country—and that’s saying a lot.
As for Archbishop Donald Wuerl, I don’t know what to say. He had a pretty good reputation, from what I had heard, until he came to Washington. But he has been a coward since, letting Nancy Pelosi showcase herself at a Mass under his jurisdiction, and so forth. Obviously DC is a real hotspot these days, and he needs to be civil, but I don’t really think he has been doing his job.
Just my impression.
Well done!
Well done, dangus. Very honorable, indeed.

Yes, definitely an abomination before God. They will have to answer for it one day.
I didn’t see the other thead. Keep us updated.
It takes a big person to do this.
I admire you!
I read that Joe Biden would be the Commencement speaker and would be honored with a degree of some sort at St. Joseph’s College which is either in PA or NY. People were outraged about that a couple of weeks ago.
It is my understanding that Archbishop Wuerl has written directly to Kathleen Sibelius and has asked her to NOT approach the altar to receive Holy Communion at Mass.
If that is correct, then I applaud him.
St. Joseph’s University is in Pennsylvania. There are two St. Joseph’s Colleges I know of, Minnesota and New York. My guess is that it’s St. Joseph’s University, though. SJC is a very small commuter school where Cdl. Egan has kicked several universities out of the Catholic Church, and Abp. Dolan, his replacement, has come out swinging over Notre Dame. OTOH, Cdl. Rigali of Philadelphia is very orthodox.
BUT if you didn’t hear it very well, might you have confused some talk still about Obama at Notre Dame? ND is in St. Joseph County, IN.
I also found where last Fall, Biden received communion from his “home” parish of “St. Joseph’s of Brandywine” (not clear if that’s the town or if it relates to the parish), in defiance of the bishop of Scranton.
The substance of my post went far beyond the mere misreporting of actions, to shocked inferences of motives for those misreported of those actions.
Thank you, each of you, for your kind words. I do believe it is God’s work to encourage the sinner to admit and atone for his misdeeds, and you have all done that. But I cannot take any praise for this correction; the original post contained not only misreporting, but horrible speculations as to motive, made in shocked outrage.
No. I heard it well, and I posted an article about it on another site. I just can’t remember the location of the school — I think it was PA. Of course we have Donna Brazile receiving honors and giving a commencement speech at Xavier in New Orleans and the New Orleans Bishop boycotting that ceremony. These liberal University administrations are no longer trying to fly under the radar. They are deliberately defying the Bishops.
As far as I’m concerned, they might as well be dispensing the abortion meds themselves. It’s a disgrace.
