Fr. James Schall comes immediately to mind....though there ARE several others. ;-)

My immediate thought was Fr. Mitch Pacwa.

He’s a Jesuit; what did you expect? Jesuits haven’t followed Church teaching since Moses was a little boy.

Their arrogance and superiority is a playbook for LIBs.

I personally think this priest is wrong about the Republican Party, American Catholic Church and the Pope.

I think the thing that has changed is the seriousness that Pope JP II, and especially Pope Benedict have given the faith. Anyone who has read Benedict's "Introduction to Christianity" knows that he is a great thinker and a great teacher. That seriousness about the faith is trickling down to the catholics in the pews oh so slowly. Twenty years ago no one would have protested an event such as the Notre Dame commencement, people today are taking the faith more seriously and it shows.

From what I can tell, Catholic Democrats are going to chose. The Republican party has always been the party of the principles of the Declaration of Independence. Anyone who reads Lincoln's speeches knows he rarely omitted references to it. He said it was his complete political guide. Here is what Pope John Paul II said about our declaration.

The Founding Fathers of the United States asserted their claim to freedom and independence on the basis of certain "self-evident" truths about the human person: truths which could be discerned in human nature, built into it by "nature’s God." Thus they meant to bring into being, not just an independent territory, but a great experiment in what George Washington called "ordered liberty": an experiment in which men and women would enjoy equality of rights and opportunities in the pursuit of happiness and in service to the common good. Reading the founding documents of the United States, one has to be impressed by the concept of freedom they enshrine: a freedom designed to enable people to fulfill their duties and responsibilities toward the family and toward the common good of the community. Their authors clearly understood that there could be no true freedom without moral responsibility and accountability, and no happiness without respect and support for the natural units or groupings through which people exist, develop, and seek the higher purposes of life in concert with others.

The American democratic experiment has been successful in many ways. Millions of people around the world look to the United States as a model in their search for freedom, dignity, and prosperity. But the continuing success of American democracy depends on the degree to which each new generation, native-born and immigrant, makes its own the moral truths on which the Founding Fathers staked the future of your Republic. Their commitment to build a free society with liberty and justice for all must be constantly renewed if the United States is to fulfill the destiny to which the Founders pledged their "lives . . . fortunes . . . and sacred honor."

HEY NEWSWEAK/WP:

Can’t you find one Catholic for your “On Faith” section who hasn’t been in some way publicly disciplined by the church? Come on, as passive as the church is against liberals, it shouldn’t be hard!

Fr Z from WDPRS posted this article, with his excellent (as always) commentary about an hour after I put the article up on FR.

He later posted an update he received from a Republican Staffer:

"I’m not sure where Reese is coming from. Considering that the Bishops’ rarely meet with Republicans here on the Hill, I am not sure how we can be egging them on. We all thought we were irrelevant to the USCCB. In 12 years on the Hill, I have never once sat down with a staffer from the USCCB on any issue."

The above was in response to this comment in the article:

The bishops are being egged on by Republican activists whose presidential candidate lost the election. There is clearly a conservative conspiracy to do whatever is possible (including lying about ambassadorial candidates) to create conflict between the Catholic Church and the Obama administration. They want the Catholic Church to be the Republican Party at prayer. Some bishops are falling for this.

Thought that would be an interesting addition...

Father Reese has his ear to the ground in the observation that Catholics are not reacting to what the Bishops are doing. It was for that reason I suggested in a prior post, that the bishops of this country tell the parishes what is going on at Notre Dame. The people who are aware know what’s going on because they are following it on the internet. We have a deep concern for the direction society is going with regard to abortion and other moral issues, so we keep ourselves abreast of what’s happening. The others are bogged down with wvery day issues, or don’t care.

The Catholic clergy in this country could do away with this evil, abortion. One politcal party has glommed onto what is a serious moral issue and has been propagating it since 1973 as a political plank. Resistance to wrongdoing is not political. Somehow, there has been a veiled threat against christians who speak out against evil, that their tax-exempt status could be revoked. That gives people who don’t like the discomfort that comes with resistance to evil a rationalization for their silence. I would like to see the Church stand up to these self-indulgent people and make a run at doing away with this evil of abortion.
