Walsh: Immigration: Never an easy answer (OPEN)

Like most immigration purists, Ron Mortensen sees few grays.

Undocumented workers are "illegal aliens." And compassion is for wusses and "media elites."

So I knew Ron would have a quick answer for two troubling immigration cases keeping me up at night:

In one, the LDS Church knowingly sent an undocumented missionary off to baptize converts for two years, all the while knowing at any moment his religious service could end in jail. It did.

In the other, the Division of Child and Family Services is blocking the efforts of a Mexican grandmother to retrieve her 2-year-old, American-born granddaughter.

As I expected, Ron's response was swift and brutal in its simplicity:

"These cases show the problems that come about when religious organizations and other business, civic, political and media elites support illegal immigration," Mortensen wrote in an e-mail. (He's doing humanitarian work in Senegal.)

"When these elites support illegal immigrants for their own purposes, they may feel good, they may benefit financially, and they may increase their membership numbers. But they are selling the illegal aliens false hope and, in many cases, heartbreak and despair."

It's hard to argue the point when you consider the stories of Jose Calzadillas and Galilea Garcia. Two institutions of this state -- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and DCFS -- seem to be thwarting either immigration law or their own policies for self-preserving reasons.

Open threads are a town square. Antagonism though not encouraged, should be expected

Posters may argue for or against beliefs of any kind. They may tear down other’s beliefs. They may ridicule.

On all threads, but particularly “open” threads, posters must never “make it personal.” Reading minds and attributing motives are forms of “making it personal.” Making a thread “about” another Freeper is “making it personal.”

When in doubt, review your use of the pronoun “you” before hitting “enter.”

Like the Smoky Backroom, the conversation may be offensive to some.

Thin-skinned posters will be booted from “open” threads because in the town square, they are the disrupters.

Thin-skinned (emotional, whiney or mercurial temper) posters are the disruptors on open threads.
